They actually released it as DLC or as a very hard unlock.
uh… Joe… u said that the game is to easy when there is a game mode where enemies are stronger and u die in ONE hit. yeah this game is so easy
dont you think he means in general, as in normal mode that it is to easy. any idiot can make a mode that one hits you but that dosent make the game hard in general, its just a cheap trick to make it look harder. like diablo
I can’t stand the new Dante. He’s too emo. Dante should face a demon dog and do exactly wheat the video clip showed. I downloaded the character skin pack, only because I had some extra MS points handy. Thankfully it had a ‘classic Dante’ which resembled the DMC 3 Dante. I played through the game with that skin just so I could tolerate it. It even showed the skin in half (only half?) of the cut scenes.
Speaking of cut scenes, there were some that just seemed… out of place to me. Like that one near the end of the game when Limbo had been merged with reality and demons started appearing. Poof, then we’re looking at an real time updating chat forum about the appearance of demons, with some random ‘We have awoken’ screen or something, and then we’re back to the game again.
Combat was a mixed bag for me. I used to like using the one move where Dante dashed forwards, stabbing the enemy. In the new DMC you have to push forwards twice on the thumb stick and then hit Y. Compared to the DMC 4 combat system, that seems clunky to me, and I didn’t use it as much. The whole combat system as a whole seemed lacking of some moves. With Aquila you could pull in pretty much every ‘standard’ enemy, but there was no ‘blast them all’ follow up move. I will say that I liked the whole launch with Y, then slam them down with B. I spent more than a few times torturing the last enemy with that.
As a stand-alone game it’s not bad. It clearly sets up a new series, and could have done better not being tied in with the DMC franchise. I think they would have done better if they’d stuck with the old, established mythos and characters. I still have no idea how Nero is related to the Sparda bloodline, and since they’ve rebooted, we probably never will.
I’m both interested and hesitant to see how the new direction will go. If they keep it similar to the old story, with characters developing like they did, then Kat will end up being this DMC’s Lady… since she witnessed the fight between Dante and Vergil. Yet they’ve left holes on how such character incarnations could originate. Since Mundus died, who will create Trish? How will Lady come into the picture?
I did like how they kept the different appearance of Dante’s and Vergil’s swords the same as they looked in the original games, though one thing I never did understand is why they looked different. Dante’s looks like a broadsword, while Vergil’s is a Katana type.

I personally thought old dante looked gay but i was never a fan of the games so please fans dont take that to heart i personally think the new dante looks better but his personaility in new one does suck balls

as a DMC fan i honestly give this game a 7 for gameplay, graphics and stuff you know what i mean, BUT the lack of fresh story and the introduction of MR ASSHOLE damm. I really hope they dont do that again and bring back the Dante we all know with his supercool attitude and DMC 4… even Nero wasnt that bad of a character… i hope that the open ending with Vergils downfall DLC doesnt become an excuse for them to launch another DMC with the new Emo clown we have just been bitch slap as DMC fans.
The new Dante look didn’t bother me but his personality does. He’s really not to my liking if he acts emo. Though it’s just a character, Gameplay is what’s really important.
I like the redesign of the character, and of the universe personnaly.
The classic Dante was a badass and had a big mouth, but this over the top personnality led to a rather superficial Dante. Ho, he had his part of glory, but only with Vergil who was the only one able to make Dante look something else than a 5 year old with a sword (and awesome moves).
This interpretation is more on the “realistic” style, which can be getting annoying concidering it is quite mainstream and different from the original.
But I like it, I related somehow to this character, I understood his personality. He isn’t impermeable to events. When I saw him realize in DmC 1 he killed his brother, I couldn’t feel anything from him. Here, he IS a brat. But he had it rough, and his way out was to disconect with the world because it was too much for a little boy to handle. Seeing demons, feeling hunted all the time, nobody to relate to, to understand or to care about you, this product guys like him.
And I want to see him evolve from this “I don’t care about the world because it has nothing to offer me” to a more responsible, more dedicated individual. And he can do it with style, even though he is an amateur here, especially in one-liner. I like this Dante, because I can feel something when I see him.

Well all i can say i never play this game ever this game more for the new people and i don’t mine that way but it be best if capcom will make two differn devil may cry game like this one and the old one so fans like my and you joe and ever one can enjoy so thay got to make a devil may cry 5 for the fans that made the game so popular in the frist place so this is what we need capcom.

My first DMC was in fact the Anime (which is one of my favorite ones), so I was thinking about buying the game. But since they completely remade Dante, I borrowed it from a friend to play it first.
), Succubus and Bob Barbus didn’t even hit me on Son of Sparda, Dante is the chosen one (I hate that), not badass, has a completely new attitude in every single location and never gets shot or impaled (and looks stupid to me), SSS is no challenge, Kat (I always wanted her to die) is just annoying, especially when you have to escort her and angels have no influence in the story (where are Dantes anglepowers if he has demonpowers/Deviltrigger? Why has his Mother red hair and wings in one picture and looks like the original in another?).
After that, I bought DMC 3 and 4 and have way more fun with it. Why? Because:
New Sparda is a joke, the bosses in DmC are weak as hell (or limbo
And now that I’m playing DMC3: Vergil is also “Vergil in name only”, since he uses guns, isn’t badass at all, never has to fix his hair and doesn’t use his sword!
And the only strong of Bob Barbus attacks is ripped of from the insides of Leviathan, though Leviathan is hard as hell even on normal.
Now I try not to be a fanboy, mainly because I hate those single-minded slugs, but what the heck did they do Dante? He’s an obnoxious little, over-sexed, oh-so-dark, pretty boy with a girlfriend sporting spray-cans of squirrel giz. His brother is a monster and Mundus is a banker? Where’s my smart-mouthed, pizza loving, bitch smacking Dante and who the hell is this? I mean, DMC1 had its problems (ie. Poor enemy AI), but this game didn’t even have the common decency to fix those problems. On top of all that they nerfed his signature guns to the point that they are completely useless.

dante’s a friggin teenager, acting like a teenager, what do you expect ? growing up without parental guidance and force to fin for himself at an early age, growing up in a world where you dont know who too trust, because the world is corrupt and brainwash by demons which its hard to distinguish good from evil , i would be in a bad mood to. try seeing things from a different perspective, you narrow minded prick.
Your intro is funny as heck but you do make a good point about the new look of Dante appearance of how its Ninja Theory trademark character because it wouldn’t be much of a reboot of if it was same Dante from Capcom trademark character

I love your rewievs, but i dont under stand why you keep complaning on Dantes ”Remake” sure he dosent look all that badass now as he did in the last games, but since this game is about dante when he was young i understand why they made him like this, it would just have been wierd if they keept the dante from the other games in this game, and also thats why they put in that White hair joke, if you know that this is dante when he was young i dont understand why pepole keep complaning…

1: a 7, (on Joe’s scale) is a GREAT game. So you dont want to wast your money on a great game? Yeah, cause stuff thats GREAT sucks ass, huh?
2: Joe just reviewed Metal Gear Rising the other day, and gave it a…(drumroll)… 7! Tada! Guess what? ITS THE SAME SCORE! If you think its better, fine, you are entitled to that, but if you comented like the quote above, that means your buying based on Joe’s recommendation, so you wouldnt wanna buy that game either. Have fun missing out on 2 awesome games
Good review, but flawed in some aspects. To repeat Dixxhead he is not emo. At all. Arguing that Trish (who interacts with Dante a full 5 times in the first game) is a stronger character than Kat seems to collapse in on itself. I personally like the realistic characters a lot better than the anime archetypes represented in the past games if for no other reason than video games being filled to the brim with Japanese archetypes. I’m glad to see the futurama connection on here, I laughed my ass off when I played the demo with that boss. There could have been a targeting system, but I would think it would have been equally difficult to target the correct enemy in a crowd. The independent aiming of guns in DMC 3 felt like a gimmick to me that just distracted from the gameplay so I didn’t use it much. Granted this is largely due to playstyle, and inclusion of a targeting system wouldn’t have hurt anything. You can play through with just aquila, rebellion, and arbiter… on the lower difficulties. Playing through on more difficult settings quickly makes the need for osiris and eryx apparent. Killing a ghost rage with aquila would take forever and eryx makes a fight with drekavac so much better; not to mention devil may cry has never been just about beating the game, its about doing it and varying things up to look like a freakin badass doing it. Ebony and ivory are damn weak, though, they could stand to be stronger, it seems as though the guns in the game were just meant to support the melee weapons as opposed to weapons on their own. Personally I used the guns that way to begin with. Also agree that S rankings are given out like candy.
I loved every single DMC game so far but this, this.. THIS ONE ROCKS HATERS! This game is amazing, I didn’t think it would be this great. Best reboot of all times
Still miss good old Dante and DMC3 Vergil *sighs*… guess I’ll stick to the HD Collection.
Awesome game, combat is just perfect and mixed weapons are fun and give players a wide amount of combinations.
The only problem are the characters, they are too much agressive and serious something that we didnt saw on early devil may cry,

The succubus is just plain boring…. and i expected much more from mundus…. And he ended up as succubus that can shoot fire ball….
This is what I like about this site you look at all points of a game not just small bit but I think that this one does need a bad ass seal of approval for the combat but other than that good review
The older ones were better then this shit. Granted they didn’t have the great cosmetics or the interesting weapons, but at least it was super challenging and Dante didn’t look like freaking Hayden Christensen. I’d go to great lengths to say that he PAID them to make Dante look like him, because the appearance is almost identical, it’s scary. I *might* get this if it drops far below market value, but for now, it simply does not offer enough with the shit that’s broken in it.
Look I have to say this because I’m so tired of reading these…Ninja Theory wanted to keep Dante looking like his previous versions but CAPCOM forced them to make him look different to “appeal to a younger demographic”. As far as making him look like one of the guys working on the game, he has admitted on several occasions that after the game was finished he went out and purposely styled his hair to match the character because he was very happy with the newer version. I liked the older version but this reboot was not bad and hopefully this won’t be the end

my personal opinion heh i played the demo and it was crap and then compared to the other games yea it deserves a 7/10 doe plus heres my personal thoughts on how the game can be better:finding weapons like for examplee the sawed of shotgun or a bazooka of sometype then at least have some eastereggs of dante in the old dmcs then u can upgrade ur weaponry in a upgrade store like always.plus make the characters more interesting and u can change characters like in DMC3 like vergil or somebody plus atleast show when vergil turns evil and have honor and show wat he turned into and then it all leads up to dmc3 that makes the story in order and im saying that if u beat all the diffcult modes u can unlock a secret ending showing that then u can unlock vergil to show his part of the game and wat he does and how he earns his sword
This post is examplary for how someone who didn’t play the game tries to make it “better”. I just picked your post because it was the first to come up with this stuff. Most ALL you mentioned to make the game better is IN the game; just like always. :O
Really the only problem I would’ve had with DmC was the 30 vs. 60fps problem, but I got it on PC and I played like a charm (in effect, controls are MUCH more responsive than in DMC4/Dante just moves way smoother). That said, Joe got some points that bothered me aswell… While I can’t agree with Dante being an Emo (how is this crap still alive? In the first Trailer, yeah he was made to look and behave like an Emo; now he’s all but. He’s a rebellious punk at best), they really bombed it with Vergil. However, I do think they can “save” that char with the DLC… In DMC3 Vergil felt “superior” to Dante all the way through the game, in effect even in the end they were on equal standing. DmC however made Vergil seem a few steps lower to Dante throughout the whole story and in effect confirmed that with that pitiful ending.
However, Vergil in DMC 3 was craving for power, I can totally see that motive coming back, eventually having Vergil surpass Dantes abilities making way for a re-imagining of DMC3; hopefully by Ninja Theory. Those guys’ve got it in them.
Difficultywhise, I find it about on par with DMC4 (which was easy compared to 1 and 3); not a big problem since DMD or even Son of Sparda Difficulty ups the Ante quite a bit and in an interesting way. In a way, new Dante feels like Nero mixed with Dante and thus really superpowered; but honestly if he wasn’t the game would be DMC1 Dante Must Die hard.
Agreed, loved the game but vergil kind fucked up a lot… He is too agressive and too weak, in DMC3 vergil and dante fought as iguals but in the new DMC vergil didnt stand a chance

I know it’s not the same , you remember nero.. another inmature jackass with a lot of power and a ego the size of dante’s sword rebellion? well i hate the guy at first , but eventually you get used to it ; And i going to do the same with black hair dante , enjoy the awesome gameplay style and play this game like it’s not a dmc sequel ( sadly like i did with dragon age 2..)

Dante is a badass in the original games because of who he is. He dosn’t have to prove himself to the audience or anyone for that matter, he just is. This new Dante is a punk emo who has to constantly yell out at people “I’m Dante the demonkiller, has a nice ring don’t you think” ugh I shudder every time I hear any of his dialogue. He isn’t Dante. I will still buy the game but only after it drops at least to half price.
Please make sure you know what Emo means before using it in a post, I’m sorry but that is just ignorance on your part. He is not Emo if anything he seems to have more of a Grunge style back in the 90′s.

this game it is the beast game ever but they must call the game DMC 0 and the DMC 3 they must call it DMC1 and DMC 1 they must call it DMC 2 and DMC 4 they must call it DMC 3 the story start from left to right not from the right to left
In all honesty Trish wasn’t exactly a major presence in DMC. She was important in the beginning and the end, but throughout the main game, you kind of forget she’s there. Lady on the other hand was far more interesting. She showed up a lot more and you learned more about her as the game went on. Not that the plot was always DMC’s strong suit, Dante’s one liners were awesome and Vergil was amazing in DMC3.
Considering picking this up, but not for $60. Gameplay and overall plot looks decent, but yeah seems like they weren’t too good with the characters. It seems like maybe they should have made their own devil hunter hack and slash. Attaching the names of the old favorites to essentially new characters is just asking for trouble. Especially if a new studio is in charge of production.

I’ve never played ANY DmC, so being totally neutral to the series, I’m sorry but I’m just going to state my opinion out loud; the old Dante looks stupid too.
Actually, if I’d have to decide, I’d say the old Dante looks even more girly and/or gay.
Though in the new one he also seems to have a personality of a bratty angstridden teenager.
So yeah, dunno why all the fuzz as Dante never even looked cool to me… Should pick up these games though, just because of the gameplay.
Being a neutral party you have a good non-biased opinion. Honestly I have played all of the DMC games and looking back (especially in DMC 4 where he is wearing tight leather pants…eww) he just looked very different from other heroes and that’s what made him cool to me. He wasn’t huge and bulky or in a powered up suit of armor he was just out there with some guns a sword and style all his own. I mean really I would rather have Ninja Theory work on the title than see CAPCOM ruin Dante like they did with the Resident Evil franchise.
