I have to say, the pic of Superman (half kneeling on the ground with one fist on the ground too) is a cool pic, but also one of the most overused “poses” of the last years
Amazing movie I’ve watch it 4 times now, see it on IMAX for the big ass Screen
the movie was cool….
don’t like the comic Supes much (DC did too Supes, what Toei did to DBZ with GT)… but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying an grand “action” movie
even if it seemingly has a few flaws, some visuals werern’t the most original and some of the acting from Crowe and Zod could have been better…
the “Superman” Feeling was there,… more then ever, the action was cool, the movie had “emotions” (more than any other Superhero movie of the past years) ect. ect…
it’s not quite as epic as 300 or Batman Begins, but it still rocked!!
it’s an “ACTION” movie with Superheroes, focus on “action”.., what did you want?… Batman Begins was more an “ADVENTURE” ; ..X-men First Class was more a “DRAMA/CHARACTER” thing..
MoS delievers the “badass/hero/epic” feeling, that people enjoy when they read comics/mangas watch animés ect. ect.
and for an “Action” blockbuster movie, it hade more emotions than Batman Beginns or X-men First Class….
sure, MoS could have tried to “dramatize” a few moments less (like the “TV: you are not alone” felt corny), or made sure Crowe and Zod acted more fitting to the situation, to make it feel more “serious” ect. ect..,
but it still worked…, you just have to get into the “HERO” feeling, the movie offers
yes, it was like a “drug”, it sucked you in, sowhat??.. so did movies like 300, Avatar ect. ect…., it’s pure “enjoyment”, such movies are a good balance between movies like “zero dark thirty”, “Lincoln” ect…
turning of you’re “brains” is good, when they’re on all the time while working, studying ect. ect…. (not that we only have too enjoy such movies , it’s like with games… Games like Halo, Borderlands…, nothing against playing those…make a good balance, when also playing games like Xcome, Fire Embelem too, ……)
I guess I agree with you on the topic “turning the brains off is good, sometimes”, and I understand the “getting in the hero mood”.
You see, I didn’t HATE Man of Steel, but when I got of the theatre I was feeling like shit, like Superman beated the crap out of me and I felt more dead than alive. I understand that movies, sometimes, can make you feel BAD emotions, indeed, the mark of a good movie is when it’s not irrelevant… and Man of Steel was definitely NOT irrelevant… but it made me feel BAD and that feeling is something that I simply cannot relate to this character. Superman should be about everything that is good/best about mankind and, ultimately, deliver the unkept promess of the “American Dream”… in that topic the movie failed abismaly.
I don’t think that Joe’s argument that “this is a DIFFERENT Superman and we’ll always have Christopher Reeve, Donner Superman” holds… because i think it misses the character completely, it feels more like Goku than Superman in my opinion: a “dumb, adolescent, hyper-reactive” Superman with simplky no regard for the “American way” or, ultimately, for Human lives. But yes, the images were spectacular.
As for Xmen first class: I really enjoyed it, I thought it captured the beginning of the Chris Claremont era perfectly and, for the first time in a movie, all the mood/atmosphere of the Xmen comics (i guess the cast really, REALLY helped – Kevin Bacon?, Michael Fassbender?, Jennifer Lawrence? – AMAZING).
This is really worrying me. I simply don’t understand why so many people liked this movie, maybe because the humanity is getting dumber or simply the average ages for your site (Joe) is around 13 year-olds. Damn, I’m 30, I do like viedogames and I do enjoy your videos Joe but… I understand this video because I think you did it because you’re where high as hell with your favorite super-heroe, but one day you’ll see that this movie, like Transformers, the new Star Trek and all this dumb-shit-ass-movies they’re throwing us all the time, you’ll see that this really sucks.
I start to see all this dumb-movies like a disease, because it seems like people only care for destruction and visual estimulation rather than story, character, music and emotion… damn, whenever I hear the John Williams Superman soundtrack it only makes me want to cry now. This movie shouldn’t deserve to be called a movie, it really really sucked. Not because I’m stupid, but because I had the strength to not get sucked by the DRUG that it was.
Don Matrick left microsoft
I watched it Lithuania(Europe). Because you asked me to. And I really enjoyed the movie. THANKS
Mission Accomplished, as member of the british regiment of the Angry Army. This movie wipes the floor with superman returns.
THE MAN OF STEEL 2013 IS THE BEST SUPERHERO MOVIES EVER MADE ,Since The Dark Night Series, I’m Not A Fan Of Superman , more a batman FAN guy..
TWO THUMBS UP FROM ME.. Two the superman FANS!! YAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!! Please Watch The Movie.. Make It A BoxOffice Like Batman
345.6 http://movies.yahoo.com/news/man-steel-speeds-345-6m-worldwide-box-office-222442966.html, keep this beast rolling
Mission Acomplished I And My Wife saw this movie and we are both fans of the chris reves superman movies we loved it
OMG! I have to watch it! *salute* My family will go and watch this movie.
We also will rate it the usual way, like we did with Transformers, Batman and Silent Hill 2.
Man of Steel made a third of the budget just from the product tie ins.
They sold us an inspiring Superman, and gave us a bi-polar Superman.
I really didn’t care for the Man of Steel film very much. I’m a huge fan of Superman as well, and I found a ton of weird “derp-moments” in the movie that really pissed me off. I didn’t like it.
A LOT of inconsistencies. I mean everyone just believed WAY too easy. “I’m your father” “ok”, “I”m superman’s father” “I Believe you”, “black hole above earth, doesn’t suck earth in and vanishes immediately.”
Little note guys, just because it made more than Toy Story 3 doesn’t make it better. Man of Steel got 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. Toy Story has 99%. It wasn’t worth the money to see. And I hope Joe will acknowledge this and not kiss that film’s ass because it’s his favorite superhero.
i dont think joe would kiss a films ass, he genernally will tell you straight the pros and cons to things. like with superman returns.
Beat Toy Story 3 for over 116m. Number 1 baby!
Saw it on your orders… My favorite “Supes” film thus far is still part two but I think I dug this one even more… Let me take my nostalgia goggles off… Yep. Kay, best Superman film so far. From the director of Watchmen which in my humble opinion is the greatest “Hero” film ever. Zach Snyder is F-Ing awesome… SHUT UP ABOUT SUCKER PUNCH OK! (it was still a pretty film, technically.) So as a guy who isn’t even a huge Superman fan… Sorry… I recommend it as a lover of film and cause Joe said friggen watch it… 4 out of 5 for me… Peace, Love and Cartridge game systems… – Mr. S
It’s not out in Australia til next week, I’ve been looking forward to this for a Loooooooooong time.
Even if Doug didn’t like it….
Oh yea, missioned accomplished with entire family. Awesome movie. Looking forward to the review!
Movie was great. The story was dark and I like how serious it was, and the action was phenomenal.
This movie was awesome please review it soon, Rotten tomatoes gave it a 56% critic review while the public review is an 82%. They also gave Returns a 75% what the fuck is that this needs to be assessed. Thank you Angry Joe!
If i remeber right spoony dint like new superman , angry joe should make video and “battle” spoony ,they would talk about what they liked and what they didnt . Should be interesting conversation
Mission Accepted Me And My Wife Will Be Seeing This Movie Tomarrow
Joe I am interested in ur opinion on this cuz I had a major deal breaker about this movie that feels like the flood gates have been open, the krakken has been released and now there is no turning back
the angry army is waiting on your review joe
I change my mind this movie was super, it wasn’t perfect. But it was good, this movie actually got me into the whole superman idea… story what ever.
Good(stuff i at least liked)
-the kripton story
-feel and theme
-russle crows role
- the way his dad dies
- Loise being stupid
He is called Jor-el and its spelt Lois
If I see another, “Oh, well, Batman was darker,” as if it were a defense of Nolan’s obsession with darkening stories, I’m going to punch a fool.
Look, making a series darker or edgier is variable upon the series itself; Nolan’s Batman isn’t a “dark” series, because it’s a story that’s overall not particularly grim at any point. Nobody important that isn’t villainous dies in that series, and at most a couple dozen mauve-shirts kick the bucket. Batman is human, nothing more, nothing less, so we can excuse this killing as he is rendered, for the most part, incapable of doing anything about it (though Raj al Ghul’s death was still bullshit, for Batman’s character).
When the normal Batman story has the Joker exploding an orphanage or paralyzing Batgirl, Nolan seems pretty damn tame in comparison.
Superman, however, is a different beast entirely; he’s an alien from an extinct planet who was instilled with human values by his parents. He doesn’t fly off to punch criminals in the face because he has unresolved mommy and daddy issues like Batman: he does the right thing because IT’S THE RIGHT THING! He was taught to have a moral fiber as strong as his muscles, and that’s part of what made him such an incredible figure: he was nutured to be a better being than most of his fellow Kryptonians, at least by our human standards. He is, for all intents and purposes, a benevolent demi-god in a world filled with malevolence and cruelty.
By taking Superman and changing him as he has, Nolan has essentially crafted a Super-Spiderman, with a broken-ass aesop from Superman’s father, or shall we say his Uncle Ben, about “don’t let them know who you are, even if it kills them”.
Furthermore, Superman does not kill. It’s just something he doesn’t do; perhaps he would aid in execution if the state ever asked him, but simply killing a being isn’t what he does; the very act of doing so nixs the entire “super” aspect of Superman.
The reason why Superman is capable of such moral strength is because he doesn’t afford himself even an inch of lee-way; after all, for a man capable of breaking the moon in half, even a moment of lost control for ANY reason could lead to a slippery slope of excuses for murder and justification as “it was more efficient than a legal system”, if only in Superman’s eyes.
So, no. This was a stupid amount to darken the man of steel, and I will defend this position to the death.
agree and disagree, bats follows the code, to preserve life. if he didnt he would had choked joker to death along time ago.
those ideas seperate dc from marvel comics. i really wish they wouldnt had dropped the ball on this movie and stuck to their guns. they creators of the film just had big differences in the ethos of superman then i do so it is hard for me to except him as superman
have you EVER read the comics?
I absolutely agree with you.. this movie was horrendously written! Illogical conveniences and ridiculously drab and bland acting with little to no actual moments of genuine character development… just bullet points and exposition. Im so desperately trying not to spoil it, but jesus was this thing an insult to any knowledgeable or even passing superman fan. Genetically engineered scientists can beat the ass of genetically engineered military leaders of planets? Everyone is wearing ancient house of El’s stuff (apparently only kryptonians who explored outer space)? And at least 4-5 jesus references to superman… this was sadly dissappointing to say the very least! I read superman comics and listen to the audiobooks from graphicaudio.com and THAT is the real superman… noble, kind, responsible and most of all… relatable… Sorry Joe, but you may not like what you see…
I thought i was the only one who cared about the excessive use of exposition in movies; this seems to be an increasing trend every time i go to the movies.
It feels to me like all the elements (that are known to sell) are there. But, why does it feel so soulless? Forget the ending for a second (people who don’t read the comics or even know Superman won’t know why this is so wrong–by this point i had given up and willing to accept anything).
I feel like an algorithm churned out pieces of brilliance and the writers simply said, we have to populate this scene with words…literally any words…doesn’t matter about the flow from scene to scene, nor sense of any kind. Also let’s assume the audience is stupid so if something happens a character should then, there and then, describe what happened.
Now i know for a lot of people this doesn’t matter. People only care about stories superficially perhaps, if all the elements are there the execution won’t matter. I can’t say anything about the acting–because i don’t know enough to care— but the writing was lazy. So much about the movie felt right; i could see what they were trying, but then again so much felt wrong. Mixed bag.
But you know….lots of flashing lights, explosions and wanton destruction. I thought the guy sitting next to me would dislocate his neck (he was nodding his head in approval so violently at every explosion and super punch).
There are real problems with making Superman relatable (for me anyway) and this is true with so many from the DC roster. All of them are authority figures of some kind. Green Space Cop, Cowboy Princess Feminist, Detective Ninja Billionaire, CSI investigator scarlet speedster, Super god complex hope of humanity boyscout. The reason i bring this up-final point is that the only real way you can challenge Superman is to challenge his beliefs, morality. This movie didn’t do that. That’s also why i think TDK was so well received. Joker didn’t just fight Batman, he challenged him.
Final verdict. Technically sound, not bad for an origin but not good either. 6.5-7.5. For action lovers….MUST WATCH!
SPOILER ALERT for those who have not seen the movie yet.
I respectfully disagree about your issues with Superman’s actions at the end of the movie. It is very easy for someone with limitless power to be merciful to those weaker than they are. When dealing with normal humans, Superman can pull punches, because there is no reason for him not to.
In the case of Zod, he did not have that kind of option. Zod flat-out told Superman that he was going to massacre the human race if Supes didn’t stop him. He was going to cut down a family with his heat vision if Superman did not do something, right at that very moment. AND ZOD WAS STRONG ENOUGH, AND RUTHLESS ENOUGH, TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THAT THREAT.
Keep in mind that, in this world, there are no other super-beings. They don’t have Kryptonite-lined prison cells. Zod escaped being trapped in the Phantom zone, unlike his followers. Keep in mind that that was Supe’s original plan. He did not want to kill anyone. But, and they established this early in the movie, he realized that there was no way to contain someone who was as powerful as he was.
It was made clear that, if Superman did NOT kill Zod, then Zod would proceed to wipe out the human race. Even at the end, Superman was trying to convince Zod to stop, but Zod refused.
If Superman did not kill Zod, then he would have been as guilty of the deaths of all of Zod’s victims as Zod was. Pacifism is all well and good theoretically, but it is a crime when you stand by and let bad things happen to people and try to claim “pacifist” as a virtue. It is negligence in the worst sense of the word. They also did a good job of portraying Superman as being personally tortured with his actions, although I will admit that it was brief.
This movie is not “dark” because of his actions. I have a problem with movies where there is always some failsafe, some magic way out, like miraculously trapping ALL the bad guys in the Phantom zone. If that had happened, at least in the way the movie portrayed it, it would have been believable. But Zod escaped that trap, and Supes had no way of knowing that it would happen before hand. He was already at the point of desperation trying to trap them, because he knew there was no other way to stop them. And once that trap was sprung, and Zod was still free, Supes did not have time to find some other kind trap. He had to act immediately.
Frankly, if he had NOT been forced to kill Zod, I would have hated the end of the movie. (Unless Zod had also been trapped in the phantom zone, along with all the others. But even then, it would be too neat and simple.) That’s part of the reason I hated the end of Iron Man 3; the ending was just horrible, with the way it ended. (Unbeatable enemy for the good guy, then the superpowered girlfriend saves the day.)
(on topic but different way of looking at it) how would it had been possible for supes to snap zods neck????????? after all they were on earth under a yellow sun. so werent they not equals? ok back on track, how can u compare superman to (jesus) and go and kill someone? without putting religion in this. superman is the symbol of hope the ultimate goal for
humans to strive towards. what is the message then to humans from superman if the only solution between to equally opposing forces is the final solution? when has that work for humans threw out history? it is morally flawed and wronge.
what if supes and zod fault inside the pantom zone, that would not had been neat and simple. or supes could had taunted zod out in to space and zod throws supes into the sun. supes become super charged and knocks zod out of the milky way that sounds bad and would had stayed ture to the character and gave everybody what the needing crazy over the top violence. but no instead they distory most of metroplis many people dead or injured and supes deliberatlly kills zod
thanks for the debate guys, I really needed educated people to talk too about this. my girlfriend doesn’t care she basically said henry cavil was hot and that was it
The part of the movie most people have a problem with, the violence reducing the city to more rubble than what Zod’s ship had done, is the part of the movie that’s the point of no return. Once superman destroyed the genesis chamber Zod had only one thing on his mind. Kill as many humans as possible to hurt the man that destroyed his purpose. At this point moving the battlefield is much harder to accomplish. The agony Superman goes through at having to kill Zod was well done….the space of time that’s not in the film showing Superman mourn the dead, not so much. From what I have read we may see more of Supes dealing with the emotional ramifications in the next film.
If superman was SOOOO much more powerful than zod as you said, he never should have resorted to the finality of killing him… thats not superman, no matter what fucking situation is present… he preserves life.. which he failed to do in ANY respect in this film… supes could have taken zod out to space, to a desolate continent or the ocean, or in the air… superman should be faster and smarter… but he aint… just a fucking pretty face for the ignorant masses… defending the ending is a sad way of saying they failed… period… and really, the family couldnt have run away… give me a damn break… there was 12ft of clearance in front of them to the left to leave… total bullshit people are accepting to not feel bad inside is disgusting…
hater shut up
In the comic books Superman first encountered Zod on an alternate Earth where Zod and his buddies had killed all humans on the planet and had damaged the planet so significantly that the sky had turned black and there was far less solar energy reaching the planet. The kryptonians couldn’t escape from the planet anymore.
Superman subdued them, but then Zod taunted him by pointing out that if he left them there they would eventually die and if he brought them back their powers would return and they would kill all the humans there. Superman was torn, his only option was to use jewel kryptonite to remove their powers permanently on the alternate Earth, where they immediately died from the toxic atmosphere.
So yes. Superman killing Zod is actually canonical. As in in the comic books it happened. It was the only death Superman ever handed down aside from Doomsday.
he had to kill zod, zod wasn’t going to stop.
he really really didnt wanna do it….
im wondering why he didn’t point out mars,
Saw the movie, enjoyed watching it, though there are plenty of problems with it.
I was wondering if Joe would make a video to give his opinion on it, considering he’s a huge Superman fan and the rest of TGWTG seemed to hate it.
agreed ive been cheaking daily for joes man of steel review
I went and saw it last night and it was pretty awesome , I wont say anything that was in it, because I don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t seen it yet.
Man of Steel opening weekend total: $128,681,486…we beat Toy Story 3 lol
I was reading a lot of the reviews posted by the Angry Army here – and agree and disagree on some things – overall – I liked the movie and the direction it took… Im in upper 30s and remember the originals quite well and do love the comic series – and although this is a different light on this character – I believe showing how far he will go to protect the _innocent_ is why I didn’t squeal when he <<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
killed bad guy number one.
So if I may borrow another Army member’s review tactic – here is what I liked and disliked:
Krypton & Origin story’
Young Adult stories
Smallville flashbacks (with the exception of a few scenes will explain)
DC Easter Eggs (Yes there are a few – google them)
Russell Crowe as Jor-El
Lois Lane (Yea – I liked her and liked that they attached her early on to him while she was researching who he was – personally I thought she was worlds better than the last one in Returns. Now does she ACT like Lois??? No… And I know that – I still like her.
Lawrence Fishbourne as Perry White damn good choice.
Military scene at the end.
Combat and flying sequences
DisLIKED – - –
Sequence where they talked about his Earth Dad – but earlier in the movie we see Kal-El standing at his grave – which ruins any sequences with his Earth father that come after. It was really bad editing – they should have pieced that differently.
Artic scout ship – I m still not sure what to make of that – its just a huge ? for me.
The Codex – We get some vague description about what it is and where it is now and what it means to Zod and his vision of rebuilding Krypton. Beyond that? They go nowhere with it. Hopefully this will be addressed in a sequel.
The last 8-10 minutes of action/fighting not counting the Zod versus innocent ppl scene – they went a tad too long in this exchange of fighting – most of the national critics agree on that one – everyone is exhausted by that point.
Poor CGI in the city – it looks like a 2 D ash floor especially during the kiss scene with Lois – wasn’t done well – everything went grey-scale….weird.
They ditch the “Superman’s First Night Out” scenes… In Superman The Movie 1978 – He arrives on the scene in Metropolis saving a cat, stopping armed robbers – and of course saving Lois Lane from a falling helicopter. This is how the world gets introduced to him. I fundamentally believe – they could still have done everything the same in this movie – if they had added this 10-12 minute sequence in so the world KNEW of him before Zod calls his ass out before everyone. I don’t think the surprise value would have been affected at all – my personal opinion.
Overall – its the Superman movie we’ve been wanting to see for 35 years. Its not perfect – but considering its Superman – its very good. And since we know they are using this as building blocks for JLA – we need to be supportive so this thing will grow.
I give it a solid 8.0 Metacritic score of 77.
Going to see it again http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/month/?mo=06&p=.htm
That explains the box office, people are idiots.
Someone isn’t stupid because they like a movie mate. They just have different tastes.
