Very cool review. Conjuring is easily the better horror movies out there. It’s possibly the best commercial horror movie of the decade. Even with all its cliché it managed to scare the audience. And that’s what a good horror movie should do!
Yeah, and I think…..your cousin…..is batshit crazy, lol.
BTW, Davidson….Jesus cast demons out of several people in the Bible. In Acts 19 the seven sons of Sceva tried to drive out an evil spirit from a demon possessed man by evoking the name of Jesus. Unfortunately they didn’t have true faith but instead where calling on the name of the Lord in the sense of performing magic. The possessed man overtook all seven of them, tore off their clothes, and beat them within an inch of their lives. Matthew 12:43-45 also talks about demons roaming the earth. I hope that this doesn’t sound condescending. I know you have faith in Jesus and we are brothers in Christ. There are evil, dark entities walking this earth that we can’t see. Paul said there is a spiritual war happening in this world every day. I’m just glad we have the armor of God on and Satan can’t touch us. God be with you brother!
Just finished the movie and the ending was intense! Oh yeah, the lady in the rocking chair with the doll….holy crap man. Fuuureaky. So I was wrong. This wasn’t the same house from the “Amittville Horror”, not asthetically any way. Not even the same story line but i think based on the same house. I’m sure a lot of this story was embellished but still a great movie. And now I think I’ll play some Rome II to slow my heart rate down a bit. lol
Ok, so I finally rented this movie and I’m watching it alone at night in the dark and its scary the PISS out of me! Uuuuhm….somebody please hold my hand. I’m scared. Hahaha. And why, why, why would you go in the cellar if you KNOW all the kids are in bed asleep. It’s getting good now….get back to you. Lovin’ it so far!
Hey Joe…haven’t seen this movie yet. I keep hearing about it but to be honest horror movies have been so lame in the past 15 (yes 15 ) years that I’ve been waiting for a true horror movie to come along. Can’t wait to watch this one. Wanted to share a small bit of information. I heard you mention in the review that the house looked frickin’ creepy. That is the house in the movie Amittyville Horror, another film from the 70’s that is based on a true story. That movie is not so scary but a family lived in that house and father became possessed. He murdered his entire family inside that house. Don’t hold my to it but perhaps with an axe. I’m sure the house in The Conjuring is a recreation but adds a bit to the ambiance of the movie. Bwah ah ah!!!!
must own film got it blue ray

hey you doing chucky
One other thing sorry if you decide to delete my comments fine whatever, but if so called demons only interact when you fear them and start believing in them imagining them doing stuff at you to get your attention and the church knows this and sais this…why the fuck would movies be made just to show you this? Isn’t that um potentially very harmful?
I am watching it now as I type actually and I just think it’s stupid. Personally sick of the whole ghost haunt us demons want our families for no reason, even if we are nice people you must die.
I understand it’s for entertainment but I give this a 5/10 for being unoriginal. Ghost dont exist, I’m sick of these so called true stories…none of it is true, someone thought he heard weird sounds or unexplained stuff and immediately sais a demon is the cause of it…thats everyones explanation or commend when weird stuff happens. I do believe in demons but they cant go around kicking you, or breaking your stuff, they cant physically interact it’s all in your head, to make you sin thats their goal.
What really happened was the person they based this off of heard a scary noise something moved due to gravity or wind, and then they imagined a bunch of other things made a story about it and now a movie. I was not scared just annoyed by all the bull shit. Now I am a firm believer in Jesus Christ our lord and savrior if you are not then stfu, I do believe in demons but I dont believe them in the way horror movies or even these exorcisms made them out to be. The person had a major brain issue they have happened enough times, exorcisms are bull shit just catholics way of making them more legetimate. The bible said nothing about demons roaming the earth like ghost as far as I know, I will have to do some research.
Anyways my point is the movie is bogus just like that stupid blair witch movie it’s the same kind of thing. Someone made something up, and someone made money off of it nothing more. Sorry Joe and the other guys but you make it out like it’s the best horror movie ever….um no way over hyped by you guys and I’m glad you had fun I’m not really dissing you just disagreeing with you. Watch Jacobs ladder, it’s not based on a true story but is genually a master piece, now you have never reviewed the silent hill games but the original classic silent hill games were inspired by this movie and you will see why. It’s a scary movie but doesn’t use a bunch of jump scares to do it. Bahhhh I’m rambling movie still going. I think the idea of ghost is cool I guess I’m a horror kind of guy but not about ghost which youtube has a million videos of so called proof all of which is proven fake later. If they do exist then no one has been able to make a credible case of it.
Also personally I’d be really fucking pissed off if I were to die only to just roam the earth to be a pest towards the living. I believe you either go too Heaven or Hell thats about it.
HOWEVER lets just say ghost and demons whatever they are called are real, it does seem funny that they always happen to those who are not believers of Jesus who dont care and who seem to just ignore all the signs of God in our lives all of his teachings his presence so lets just say maybe it’s because you are of little faith and that is all demons need to mess with you that gives them enough power to interact no matter how small. Then there are those who are so super faithful that they almost lose the whole point, no offense to my cousin but he has said some weird things that make me think of him in a strange light no matter how nice he is. He claims the devil tried to get through his window that he had flesh missing on it’s face, but then he also sais he has played with God during church with a rc car….then his brother sais proudly he was given a gift for one day to see the worlds demons he saw huge ones like building size, then one that followed him a little fuzzy one….yeah that family is totally fucked up not always bad but they have the we are holier than though attitude and yet…they claim demons are all around them.
I’m pretty sure they made themselves believe in it so strongly and because they were raised to be special children of God it must be real if they believe! Give me a break.
Heh… me and my friend were watching this while riffing it, and we kinda figured out this whole movies ghost story could be explained by a drunk father lol. The random pictures falling over the in the middle of the nights, the random humanoids coming into his daughters room… yea the dad was drinking and scaring the heck out of his wife and kids lol.
when i was watching this movie with my friend i fucking swear the hole time she was screaming into my chests so glad i watched it
I really didn’t find this movie to be all that scary. It had some creepy moments, like with the doll. But aside from that, it wasn’t really that “scary”
Good ambience, good characters and dialogue, but nothing that really…popped out.
My top scary movie of the last five years would probably be Sinister. I know a lot of people rip on that film, but I felt it was legitimately creepy. It had your standard jump sequences, but the movie did it in a way that was actually scary. You see a movie called “Lawn Work” and you see a lawn mower and you just cringe at that. You know what’s coming and you can’t help but cringe at it. It’s disturbing and creepy. It really nailed that atmosphere.
The Conjuring was good, but it just felt kind of plain-Jane.
I too liked sinister, I dont care for movies that follow so called true stories. none of them are true in the way they try to make you imagine. I prefer movies that are more original like nightmare on 13th street, or Jason, those are cool movies, but when you get shit movies like paranormal activity it just kills the fun for me.
You can clearly see that it’s daylight in the beginning.
shitty movie. boring as hell
Hallo Joe,
Thank you for your nice Movie-Reviews in the past. I watch your shows for years its very entertainng and instresting your point of view to all of these movies and games.
i saw your conjuring review and i went to the cinema because your high rate, but it was a disappointment this movie isnt realy bad but not realy above average maybe a 5 or 6 from 10 Points but a 9 is much to high.
its a standart exorcism story that i saw many times without any suprises in the storyline.
many greets from germany
Tim. H
Just got back from watching this movie and it was pretty damn good. As I was watching it I felt such a nostalgic feeling of back when I saw Poltergeist, It is diffently worth going to see in the theater
my little sister watched this movie and said she couldn’t stop laughing at it
this one was ridiculous… jump scenes were so predictable…. all action was in the last 15 min. makeup was amateur at best…. nothing compared to 80’s horror….. boring boring boring…..
Hey Joe sorry this isnt relating to the movie, just wanted to say something. I think its awesome that you reviewing movies and trying new things I just wish you would cover more games. I know you probably have a lot of requests to do movies which is why you doing them, I just enjoy the game reviews more. Anyway love your show, keep up the good work man.
i haven’t seen this yet but thus far Evil Dead is my favorite horror movie of the year
Might check it out. When are you going to review into darkness joe?
why didn’t they just leave the house?
That’s actually something that gets addressed in the film. They bring up that they’re a family of seven living out in the country and don’t know anyone in the area that could help, so where would they go? On top of that, The Warrens tell them that the house is no longer possessed but the demon has latched itself onto each member of the family and will follow them wherever they go. It’s the little things like that I love about this movie, in that it still brings some logic into all the craziness going on.
I REALLY REALLY want to see this movie even though the doll kinda creeps me out.
This was a horrible movie. It was almost as funny
As the original exorcist. The effects were horrible.
We have all this technology now days and that’s
What they come up with? My homework is scarrier
Than that movie. Couldnt help but to laugh at “the
Demon/lady” whayever it was supposed to be. CAN
NOT BELIEVE I WASTED MY MONEY!! horrible. Horrible.
When will a legitament scary movie come out??
None because these kind of things dont exist. It’s made up by people to make money. Some horror movies like the fly are fun to watch cool even, but scary? Maybe I’m just too damn old for horror shit anymore but it’s all bogus, as a kid sure I can see myself being scared from a movie like this, I’d think a ghost could be haunting me at night but I’m grown up, I’m more educated about my religion the biggest one that is being Christian that demons, ghost whatever you call them, dont do this. YOU DO.
KEEP YOUR HAIR LIKE THAT. Much much better, you look quite handsome with it swept to the side and neat and not over-gelled. My fiance and I both agree; it’s a huge improvement! Thank you for the great content as always and keep up the good work Joe!
AJ, I just watched the movie and I was expecting more from the review. I went there and watch it by myself at night. Still a good movie. I’d prolly give it a 8/10.
I found the exorcism of emily rose more scary than this.
Emily Rose would have been better if it wasnt a court case.
I dont know on this one joe. I normally always agree with your take on stuff but my sister just saw this yesterday and said its basically not scary at all. So I might have to pass on this if it cant scare a girl that is afraid of everything. Maybe its just a bunch of jump scares mixed with the exorcist kind of thing?
Maybe she’s dumb as a brick and that’s why she wasn’t scared. 🙂
yup thats all it is. Also one other thing is that the use of the cross…is meaningless nowhere in the bible does it say the cross is relevant at all, all it signifies is that Jesus died by the cross, but the cross itself has no real power it’s all in your heart. No object has super natural power where did holy water come from again oh right catholic belief? It’s why I stopped going too catholic church besides it being bad for my knees, they make up a lot of stuff to make them more powerful like they are more heavenly connected. It’s mostly flair and so I stopped going too church I prefer my own console with God. Churches were made to spread the word of God but they are a mockery of what they originally were designed for.
The movie may be good, but its not based on any facts.. it is only a ‘true story’ what that means is somebody made it up for the most part and that is what the mean by ‘true’.. but its not factual or based on any real events.
The Warrens sold Amity Ville Horror to the studios as ‘based on a true story’ and non of it ever happened, but for some unbased accounts and stories that never checked out.
THE WARRENS DIDNT SELL THE RIGHTS TO THE STUDIOS. THE MOVIES WERE MADE BASED ON THE BOOK AMITYVILLE HORROR WRITTEN BY JAY ANSON WHO LOOSELY BASED HIS STORY ON THE ACCOUNTS FROM THE LUTZ FAMILY WITH THEIR CONSENT AND NOT BASED ON THE INVESTIGATION DONE BY THE WARRENS OR ANY OTHER INVESTIGATORS WHO VIEWED THE HOUSE.
Thats how I feel about these shitty so called true stories. Anyone can make up a story and sell it somehow, just look at youtube a ton of so called evidence of real ghost are all fake they can easily be proven and all so called haunting’s have been proved by natural science of what really happened, but people like to feel scared and like the idea of something like ghost actually existing. It’s all made up. God and Devils no they are not made up but these so called hauntings are ghost that tug on your legs, or clap none of these things have ever happened it’s people letting their imaginations run wild and they had fun with it.
This movie must be 50 times better than the HORRIBLE previews for it. If I take hate for this, fine, but honestly, straight-up possession movies are usually pretty lame. They’re also all the friggin’ same. For this one, I’m watching a commercial for it, and the announcer says something like ‘it’s the scariest movie of the year’ as, on screen, there’s a girl and then hands appear out of the shadows next to her and clap. They clap!?!??! Oh my!!!! That’s the SCARIEST thing ever!!!!! LOL. No, more like the lamest.
Maybe the movie is good, maybe not. But there’s NO way it’s better than the AMAZING remake/re-envisioning of Evil Dead. That was amazing, and I’d say with how it works, you could put that in the ‘possession movie’ category as well.
I hated the reboot for evil dead I’ll never watch it again, the original ones were 10x more enjoyable to watch, this was nothing but a gore fest, it was a zombie movie with so called possession nothing more. The conjuring was better than this, evil dead did not have one scary thing about it. Had a tree raping the girl, she sliced her toungue in half but when she was revided from the dead suddenly she all fucking clean and not a scratch on her toungue that would make talking very hard and weird sounding! Give me a break dude your taste in horror is obviously biased. You like zombie movies not super natural. Nuff said. I dont mean to be offensive just saying you hate this movie but you love evil dead….
I saw this movie yesterday with my girlfriend and made the mistake of seeing it during the day in a crowded theater. Don’t do that! See this at night and try to see it with a minimal audience. The laughing and talking of other people in the crowd ruined the ambiance of the movie. The movie was very creepy and very good from start to finish. I would have loved to see more. I just couldn’t enjoy it with the teenage kids ruining for me.
The movie is well worth the price of admission and I will buy the dvd when it comes out. The acting was well done but Ron Livingston could have shown a little more emotion. His character looked clueless and didn’t know what to do. Other than these minor problems the movie is really good. I found myself on the edge of my seat many times. Go see it.
I would love to see a list of your top rated horror films. Comparing it to The Exorcist is a good start but most people can agree that is a 10/10 not just as a horror movie but as an all around classic piece of cinema. You also bring up Event Horizon which I don’t consider to be much more than a middle of the road sci-fi/horror. I would like to see what you rate other modern horror heavy hitters like The Ring, The Grudge, Evil Dead, Mamma, The Awakening etc.
The funny thing about Horror is that they really don’t hold up over time. You really have to rate them after the first viewing. Second or third view you know all the jump scares and all the plot twists and they really loose their impact, so its good to capture your first initial response to the film.
btw another good scary movie that was widely dismissed was The Woman In Black. So much atmosphere you could cut it with a knife PLUS a room full of creepy toys.
LOVE Woman in Black… the very last moment before credits almost made me run out of the theater, haha
Didn’t see the movie. bit the nerdist podcast with the director and 2 actors was very good. Ceck it out! (http://www.nerdist.com/2013/07/nerdist-podcast-the-conjuring/)
Looking forward to seeing this after Joe’s review! Thanks Joe, always count on you for some great reviews!
