Watch as Other Joe & Angry Joe do their best to make the ultimately boring Flashback reboot entertaining!

It seems to be a decent remake, a bit buggy and sluggish with the controls.
But do keep in mind you keep trying to run into the friging bots. Yet you can combat roll and that was the only way to possition yourself to line up shots in the original.
I am actually sad that platformers are not very common nowindays. I actually miss the days when platformers were everywhere and a lot of people do too. Many game journalists miss platformers being popular.
This game to me does hark back to the platformers which I used to love and after playing this I realizsed that I still do. Not a bad game at all. Peace.
I certainly liked the original flashback better… it’s good that they included it in the reboot. Not saying that the new flashback is a bad game, but it certainly leaves a bit sour taste in my mouth. Even though the original was a great game (one of my all time favourites), i wouldn’t have minded if the reboot would have strayed a bit farther from the original… and i don’t mind a few bugs in a <10€ game, but it really pissed me off that they include a "stealth" gameplay that is just totally broken.
Hey Joe! The ninetees called and said they wanted their game back!
The original was very good at the time, just like another world… It is not (any one of the two) Joe’s fault that games have changed since then. Back in the days we played games like prehistorik for weeks over and over again, and still wanted to play more, it was a different time. The only problem with this iteration is that they didnt add anything to the game, just dressed it up with more modern graphics, unfortunately today’s generation is more used to more sophisticated games. (After this, would love to hear Joe’s opinion about Another world which was legendary in its time)
Judging by how both the Joes tried (and failed) to play Flashback like some inane action/platfoming game…I really do not think they are used to more “sophisticated games” at all.
Another World had a 20th anniversary edition this year. It was certainly a masterpiece, but even though Flashback isn’t has good as it, in my opinion, Flashback is the game that opened the minds for the adventure-exploration as well as cover-mecanics. Those were very rudimentary back then, but this game was one of the games that made possible Tomb Raiders / Uncharteds and, why not?, Metal gear SOlid, Splinter Cell and even Gears of War?… I know it can be hard to get it nowadays, but History happens. In the beginning there was the good-old Prince of Persia from the 80s
Incredible… this guy doesn’t even know Flashback, one of the best games of its era; and this doesn’t “reminds Jurassic Park”,but Another World (Out of this World on the US) by Eric Chahi, one of the best of the 90s. One word: ignorance.
I think these kind of reaction by these two joes, alongside with the generic reaction to tother reboots like “DuckTales”, have something in common: people are becomming stupid. There was a time were difficulty was important to boost the challenge, in fact, DIFFICULTY was the point! These guys only prove that todays generation is alienated, stupid and have WAAAY too many sugar on the blood. These guys are so dumb that they may even think that a simply thing as a BOOK would be “Boring”.
Flashback was and still is a great game.
I’m surprised a “gamer” as old-ish as Joe has never heard of it.
It was an award winning game back when it was released and set the standards for other games of it’s ilk.
Joe is just not playing right.
Fact he’s calls it a “platformer” just proves this. It has “platforming” in it yes…but it’s not a “platformer” game.
It’s more an adventure game over anything else. It’s a game you take time over, savour and use the old grey matter a bit.
If you do not play a game how it’s meant to be played, then yes of course it’ll seem “boring”. It’s like getting hold of GTA V then stating it’s “boring” as all you do is walk around a city.
Just randomly running around in Flashback not paying attention is NOT how you are meant to play it. It’s not a run and gun platforming game.
I think this reboot is fantastic and has done the original proud.
Even better, you get the original thrown in for free too, which I recently re-played through.
Well worth the asking price and by far the best of the “Summer Of Arcade” lot this year.
Joes were probably born in the second half of the eightees, which means they were too young in 1993. when the original Flashback came out to remember it or, presumably, be significantly influenced by it. Because let’s face it: Flashback may have been revolutionary, but if it is litteraly the first game you have contact with, at the tender age of 5, then you WILL NOT appreciate its genius.
It’s not the fact they may not have “appreciated” the game, it’s the fact they have never even heard of it.
Lots of games came out before I was born…but I’m still fully aware of them being a gamer, especially the ones that defined/changed genres.
It’s like saying just cos someone was born in the 80’s, they should not be aware of ground breaking films from before then.
…well… I do know Another World, but I haven’t heard of Flashback until now… You can’t expect Joe to know every single game that may or may not have defined the genre….
They are really bad at it, though…..
You can’t expect Joe to know about every single game… but damn it, he has INTERNET! This was just lazy as hell.
I don’t know why they made such strong opinions on a game they don’t even understand if the point was only goof around at each other. Sometimes that can be funny.
No I do not expect Joe to know “every single game”…why do people have to be so hyperbolic?
I do not know “every single game ever”…but I do know of genre defining ones…whether I liked them or not.
But it’s akin to a movie reviewer talking about Peter Jackson’s King Kong and stating they had never even heard of the 1933 original.
It’s just blatant lazy, ignorance.
Films/games that did change/set standards are not that hard to not know about.
Also the fact they don’t even bother to play the game right anyway, then just keep going on about how “boring” it is.
If they genuinely do not like the game…fine. But they didn’t give it a fair chance. They paid no attention to what they are supposed to do, they ignored every aspect of the game and just ran around like idiots. How many times did they keep running into the OBVIOUS and impending explosion after taking out those droids?
People like Joe that do have this “public persona” and do these kind of vids should at the very least be as fair as possible and give a game/film/anything they are looking at a fair chance…even if the end result is still them not liking it.
What they should not do is purposely go out of their way to make something look FAR worse than it actually is just via ignorance.
I’m really looking forward to the vid of the Turtles game (see my mini review bellow) as it’s so bad and requires no thought…they will probably love it.
The original was one of my favorites.I believe that this deserves its money.
I love this game. too bad that you can’t kill 1,000 people in the first 3 minutes, and Joe do yourself a favor…actually get past the first level before you judge it.
Guess what Joe? this was an award winner in 93-94 and is still one of the finest games I’ve even played.
From what I seen it’s bland and generic but at the same time fans(>.> really?) of the first game would like this. Unless you’re one of the eight diehard fans of the first one I’m pretty sure most will skip this.
I just love those who own time machines and can go into the past and future, know how many fans of this game were and are, know whose going to play it and who won’t, and can dictate to those of us who actually like a remake of a game that actually takes brains and patience to play telling those of us who would like to check this out how we should take this or not and if we’ll like it or now.
Go back to that mindless crap GTA where half of the city is destroyed and the other half is screwing all over the place.
Thought I’d save you some time on Turtles Joe…
As a fan of the original arcade game and a big turtles fan in my youth, I was really hoping this “update” could deliver.
It’s slow, sluggish. The controls have about a half a second delay between you pressing the button and the action taking place.
Moving the camera is overtly sensitive, and they have not included and option to change that either. This is basic stuff that should be included.
I was on the training to get used to the moves, and it took me 20 mins to pull off one simple move.
Not cos I’m crap. But due to the fact the controls are delayed and the instruction given in the training does not match up to what you are actually supposed to do. I found out what you are meant to do via trial and error, and not by following the on screen instructions.
Getting around levels is also a pain as the camera is too close to your character…and you can’t zoom out. Couple this with the overtly sensitive camera and you just have such a hard time getting around and fighting.
It’s never made clear where you are supposed to go either. Now it’s a pretty linear game as in it’s not “open world”, however the levels themselves are “open” enough that you have to explore.
There is no indication of where you are meant to go, no way-point to follow, etc.
Some instances for example you have to get around by jumping from rooftop to rooftop. However you can only jump off one VERY specific spot and there is no way of knowing which spot you have to jump off unless you get really close to the edge then it’ll flash yellow…but you can’t see this unless you are close to it. So when you are on the roof, you have to run around all the edges until you find the very exact spot you have to jump from.
Sometimes when a jump looks “realistically” doable the game just will not let you and it’s a different spot you have to jump from, sometimes that one spot just does not look right.
It’s a horrible mix of linearity and open world that just does not work here.
Doing something as simple as jumping in the game is terrible. So much so I can’t even explain how it’s so bad…you just have to try it for yourself and see.
There is an evade system where you have to move a direction and press the jump button..which means you can not actually jump in a direction, only straight up, as you’ll do an evade move otherwise. Try jumping over something as simple as a box on the floor (for instance) and you just can’t. You’ll run up the box and back flip, you’ll somersault against the box…but you can’t jump over it.
The control mapping just just all wrong and it fells very wrong when you play.
Some people are comparing the combat system in this to that of the Batman: Arkham games.
The Batman games offered a very smooth, multi-layered, easy to use/difficult to master, intuitive and pleasing combat system.
The combat system here is just a mess. Slow, delayed, disorienting. It just does not “feel” right at all.
To comparing this combat system to the Batman games is just insulting the Batman games.
I can see how they were trying for a Batman-esque combat system…but they failed and badly. I can pull off 100+ combos in Batman because while the combat is tough to master, it’s easy to use.
Here, you’ll have trouble getting a combo over 10, cos the control is so “stiff” and delayed and most of the time the AI is so bad the enemies just do not attack.
I had a fight with 6 enemies and 3 attacked while the other 3 just ran against the wall. You just can’t get a good combo going with the bad system, the terrible, slow, delayed control and the bad AI that just run into walls.
Pulling of special attacks is done via the right stick. That is the complete antithesis to every other fighting game ever. The right stick is the camera movement. Every other fighting game ever has always used the stick that MOVES your character to pull off the MOVES…that is the point, it’s instinct to do this.
There is also a REALLY bad stealth element which just should not have been part of the game at all.
Looks like it could have been good, but the ass-backward, sluggish control scheme really lets this down.
I can see what they have tired to do by offering more variety into the combat…but they failed.
Hopefully they with patch this and get those controls and camera to actually work “better”, plus add a way point to follow.
But as of right now. Avoid.
This is hilarious because Joe and Joe literally react to the reboot EXACTLY the same way I reacted to the original… the frustration factor was and clearly IS beyond a joke…
So, the fact that the new one is EXACTLY the same makes me laugh but tip my hat to the devs. Flashback was HARD. It was a memory game…. arf arf.
Joes, I feel your pain… over a decade later 🙂
From what I can see, the game operates the same as the original, but with more gun play. The problem with that is that you can’t play this kind of platformer like across between Mario and a twitch shooter. It’s almost stealth platforming. Unfortunately, while the powers that be decided to make it more combat oriented they also kept the puzzle and platforming elements from the original and created a frustration filled hybrid.
The one thing about the original Flashback that they kept is that the original game is the difficulty level, which is pretty much like you were playing on hard. one or two shots and your dead. avoid all encounters unless you cannot help it, and then plan them out so you can survive.
Ultimately the game isn’t about conquering, it’s about surviving.
Loved the video, I laughed my ass off all the way through.
Ride to Hell review coming? YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
This game looks so boring… But playing with friend can make even bad games funny.
Haha, epic 🙂
“Welcome to the other Joe Show” “**** You!”
Best start ever guys. haha xD
Great video. Thx for the upload!
