Oh my god the flashbacks watching this gave me. I used to sink HOURS into EQ back in the day. And when you guys played the skeleton at the end I lost it…suddenly loads of memories hit me at once remembering that damn laugh! FARMING THAT CHESS BOARD FOR HOURS ON END TRYING TO FIND THE SCROLL TO TEACH MY DRUID A SPELL….AAHHHH!!!!!
I could still load up EQ2 happily (given the time) and sink a ton of hours into it.
Running my berzerker around once I unlocked higher level abilities that healed me the more mobs I pulled (large or tiny), still to this day makes me smile.
Great game with huge persistent dungeons. Eq1 was great but harder to get into these days. As far as gamers being aware of content styles and possibilities within mmos, there is a lot that other games haven’t touched within Everquest shadow imo. Not the place to prove it, but in dungeon design, and danger vs loss immersion, as well as named mobs to name a couple. EQ1/2 are golden oldies.
Much of the younger gamers out there will not remember this or even understand it. They won’t remember just how hard it was to be a monk in the first thirty levels and have to deal with getting you sash from your trainer for nearly a week.
I’ve been gaming for over 20 years now and Everquest is one of the more fonder memories I can recall to MMO games, besides mudding, and console tournaments. Hell I still have friends who met and got married to their spouses on EQ. To this day I have yet to find my old friend Trisha who played alongside me as her Iksar Monk (GoldenTale) and I as my Shadowknight (Keizer_Shosolas).. I do miss those days.

meh everquest at the time was great but so many mmos have came and done it better like WoW im not a WoW fanboy im just saying. For me new Everquest doesn’t look appealing at all same with Wildstar but I know a lot of people are excited for those 2 games. The market is flooded with way to many MMOs that only do 1 or 2 things new. Im waiting for ESO on console, yes I prolly will get flaked for that but I have great gaming rig and could easily play it on PC but none of my friends have a good gaming PC and the market for mmos on PC is so vast that it will last longest on console.
Holy crap I was in the Marine Corps with that guy (not Joe, the other one).
I played the original EQ and for most people that think you could not solo, your wrong. Druids and Wizards(with Journeyman boots and Spirit of Wolf for druids) could and did solo all the way up to max level(55) last I played. Also bards and a few other classes. But the other classes did have to group. And If you played 4-5 hours per day every week you could even level.
The game was based on MUDS, Multi User Dungeons, that had been around for years and mostly on any campus with a VAX(pre-PC).
On the flip side, you had to work together and read sites to even figure out a simple quest and it was not easy even then if you had 20 ppl waiting in a zone for a random spawn..yeah.. the good old days.. NOT!
today most games like WOW are descendants of EQ, For beter or worse, any EQ was first modern day MMO, everyone else is just a copy.
Everquest, in its time, was a really fun game.
I started MMO’s with Ultima Online then branched off to EQ, then FFXI then WoW. I have to say a lot of the character builds and traits of today borrow somewhat off of what EQ started, except now MMO’s are more solo/casual friendly. Back then in EQ and even FFXI (I know I’m leaving out other MMO’s but going on what I played) there were no super fast respawns or soloing past L10. You got in a party and killed stuff for xp.
Although I have to say I think WoW Improved on this somewhat (Making killing things a solo act except for instances and raids, where you get your parties) and the fact that multi classes CAN be just that. Back in EQs earlier stages if you were in a party for instance, War, Paladin or Shadow Knight were tanks, but if you did this in a raid: If you weren’t a War, you weren’t a tank. Pallys back up healed and SK’s were DD’s. Which is weird because a warriors epic was a 1Hs that could be split into dual wielding blades (still wish the MMo’s of today would embrace the whole epic quest mechanic..they looked awesome as hell too). And i don’t mean the WoW “oh you have those.” Usually they do it for rogues, locks or sometimes the occassional hunter, or you can drop a epic/legendary. The epic weapons in EQ were just that. You did quests that required raids and were hard as hell and usually took up to 30 days to complete. Unless you fought the main raids and got the primal weapons, your epics were the shit (but of course outdated as more addons came, but they did try to do an additional quest to improve epics even more)
FF did fix this mechanic to a point, Wars became more like DD’s and Pallys were the tanks (Ninja’s could blink tank too), but Wars could tank if needed. They made classes and hybrids actually matter. i think WoW improved it giving multiple classes tasks that actually mattered. I do like FF’s mechanic of switching classes or having sub classes (talking about XI the subjobs, not XIV’s where you “borrow” skills from the other classes..that’s neat too but still think XI’s was better in this point)
With all the extra ideas that’s been thrown in over the years, it’ll be interesting to see where EQ goes next.

I play EQ2 and really enjoy it, despite only being to jump on once a month if I’m lucky. I’m currently paring down the number of MMO’s I play, but I’m keeping EQ2 around. I love the little details (also mentioned in ChaosD1′s MMO Grinder video on the game) such as learning the language of your enemies, multiple chat options, and a fairly open world. I love platforming over rooftops, tree branches, and giant mushrooms. Sure, I could travel along the roads like other players, but this is more fun.
