Evolved to ARK
cool game
As someone who didn’t pay for it, that was quite fun but still repetitive with a slooooooow ass progression
Just went Free to Play on steam
U said $20 would be good for this game, well it just got better.
Just went F2P on steam

This kind of hack let us the player enter invisible function by tinkering
on the opacity of this cell.
If anyone is reading this, tell me, (whenever I check it again) does anyone still play this?
I pre-ordered it because the hot chick at game stop talked me into it. Was fun at first maxed out two classes within a couple weeks and wasn’t anything else to do but play hunt over and over. Got bored real quick and a lot of my friend sold it. Last time I played was in maybe June was pretty dead for a Friday night so I sold it
….I Do does that make me a loser or an idiot….i don’t no…
Of a total of 63 comments for this game, i counted 3 people who gave only positive responses. I guess these were the guys who must have wasted their money and are desperate to defend a DUMBASS purchase. SHAME on you for okaying day 1 dlc. There is NO WAY you could/should be defending that shit. Not to mention every other complaint made by our incorruptible reviewer. I’ll take Joe’s advice and keep my cash. Cheers Joe.
another thing, id like to point out iv spent over 250 hours into this game and im not even close to finishing.
i completely disagree with your statement claiming Evolve is (probably) ‘the best hunting type experience out there.’ because, as im guessing you dont know, a game came out this year called Monster Hunter 4 ultimate, which is a GREAT game that brings the ‘hunting’ feeling this game gives you but with a third person view and AMAZING character customization, especially if you include the many different and unique armor sets and weapons. there are FAR more unique monsters in this game than Evolve, having more than 30 large monsters for you to hunt, repel, or capture. yes, the game is very grinding, but once you make the weapons or armor you want and finally get the carve needed for them it feels so SATISFYING and good, making it feel like you put the time into trying to get this armor and allowing you too look like a total bad ass. and the balancing in this game is great, not to mention that ALL DLC is 100% FREE.
im not going to spoil anything else joe, but i really thing you should check this franchise out. id like to note that the story isnt the best thing out there, but the characters are pretty quirky and nice and the focus of the game is where it should be, which is the hunting.
Hey Joe! I have recently discovered your channel, and in addition to all the humor and anger (lol), you are an extremely intelligent and logical person that I really enjoy listening to. I am a HUGE destiny fan (boy? lol) and after watching your Destiny review, it made me really sad because that game was supposed to be awesome! I saw your excitement in your previous interviews with Deej, and then your obvious disappointment upon release. I believe the original game was actually supposed to be what we thought it would be and before release, things changed. HOWEVER – The new DLC is making this game SO much better. I believe that Bungie is really moving forward and stepping it up. Is it perfect? No. Is it still what we were promised? No. BUT I believe the changes they’ve made have really changed things a lot, and I REAAAAAALLY would love to see a follow up review based on the changes that both DLC’s have made. PLEASE. Even if you hate it! Just re-review!!! Thanks!
Hey Joe is it okay if I reference myself in being part of the angry army in my own youtube videos?
it’s okay. Worthless campaign tiring game mechanics , laugh- able story telling and over hyped game review but over all it’s okay.
Hey joe,
for the most part i always agree with your reviews, but this time i think you just missed the mark. Now im not a fan of the DLC crap either, but to me thats the only issue with this game. I think the reason why it seems like such a repetitive game to you is that yo paid extra to unlock everything, I found that working toward unlock goals and listening to how the pre-drop dialog changes as you and others unlock new characters is really a nice touch.
PS. Play with AI until you’ve found a character you like. It makes you better when one of your teamates craps out and should help with balance issues once youve found out your strengths and weaknesses.
PPS. DayZ is the real running simulator.
Best hhhhunting experiences – the Semite in me lol’d jard I mean, hard.
Everyone is disappointed with Evolve and I’m just sitting her playing Monster Hunter.
Definitely MH4U is a much better experience, but it’s definitely hard to get the ball rolling. Past that though, easy pick for top game of 2015
“Likely the best “Hunting” Type Experience out there. ” I have this feeling that i know something about a game with… i don’t know… it’s like hunting…monsters. Something like that.
I personally love this game, I like the gameplay and don’t mind the chases but that’s because I’m constantly playing Trapper; so the running and catching the monster 50% of the time is when they think they broke line of sight and it becomes like that scene in Year One with Jack Black and “Marlack.” Them in the bushes, hoping I go away. Joe’s complaints are valid, I can tell this kind of competitive game doesn’t really appeal to Joe, but even so, I’ve even thought some of the same complaints myself, I love the game, I supported it through Alpha and Beta, but in the end the game did lack a lot of content, I seriously hope Turtle Rock keeps updating and fixing and adding lots of stuff- even though, that in itself is sad because two large Alpha and Beta events didn’t help them release a full game; not only that, I recommended the game to some of my buddies and get this, the price in any country that isn’t America shoots up another ten bucks. Yup- that’s right. $59.99 to $69.99 For a review that had a majority approval out of over 400 people encouraging everyone to get the game, 2K (and possibly Turtle Rock themselves) whipped their cock out, and pissed all over my head along with all of their own consumers. Followed by shitty PR decisions, shitty business practices, and finally general greed. Instead of the full version of the game that gave me adreniboners in Alpha and Beta, I got most of the same shit and another four maps with unlocked modes that no one really plays crippling what content is actually in there. “Yay me.”
When I look to buy a game now, I look at 4 things.
1. The general opinion of the game.
2. The price of the game.
3. The content that is in the game simply through videos.
4. if it’s in Early Access or Beta (Unless it’s free, then I look at the game’s concept)
IF the game has a negative overall opinion, I simply get super cautious. if it’s at a low price, that shifts me to getting it. But if the game has minimal content, that is an instant turn off. Having not alot of content of atleast decent quality just…
It’s one of the only things about a game that can really bug me.
That and lazy AI design can turn me off a game completely. *cough* CS:GO and Dota 2. *cough*
If it has a weak concept then I don’t bother. That or if it’s got a price and it’s in Beta/Early Access, then literally… never buy it without asking the forums first if it’s any good on steam.
Also forgot my golden rule with game purchases: if it’s over 100 dollars, it will be cheaper within half a year.
Which… also I personally got turned off this game anyways because Hype has a wierdly bi-polar effect where if it’s done well enough, it’ll get hyped, otherwise… I relish the day that it stops being trending.
Like… enough people talking about a game or thing and I’ll not want to play it as much as they want to play it… save for Starcraft 2: LoTV… even though that isn’t a game but an expansion pack.
Well, before I thought it was good, but Angry Joe… You changed my opinion THIS GAME FROM HELL SHOULD BURN AND GET 1 OUT OF 10s MUAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA
Spot on again.
Even in Hungary, we only trust in your reviews Joe. 🙂
dai ota kicsit kevesbe 🙂
2 reviews in 2 weeks, you the man joe!
this game will burn out fast, they trying to make as fast and as much money of it while they can. in couple of months no one will give a damn about it.
Was going to do a let’s play for this game on my YouTube channel the noctis show. Thank god I saw you’re review first Joe! You’re the best! Love from san Antonio, Texas!
You Awesome joe, and your friend joe’s too ! Kiss from france
*sigh* so it’s following the AAA trend of being a box copy price FTP client that is also early access levels of content.
So basically its Destiny 2.
Hey joe, been watching your reviews for a while but never commented, and your usually spot on. I recently purchased and have been playing the games “Toxikk” and “interstellar marines” the later is a fantastic game and the publishers seem like some cool guys who are taking pride in their work and constantly working on adding material. You should give it a try. Haven’t played evolve, but from what you and everyone else have said about it, these games have a lot more material than that game, and both purchased together are still less than that one.
Same Rating again…
that’s what i’m talking about! rip them a new one!
ah, so it is like Inquisition then. Tedious and repetitive “content” with a lot of running, instead of a decent amount of actual good value single player material
Umm no. Its not. Its worse lol
Joe is spot on with this game. I got it used for $20 thanks to my Gamestop points and it’s already boring. This is a cool concept but should be free to play and more than likely will be very soon. The maps are have no variation and all are basically the same and the game modes are just hunt, rescue, and nest. With three monsters you do everything there is to do in less than one sitting. The hunters have a decent variety but once you find one you like there’s very little reason to play as anyone else. Luckily the ai is good because online play is very annoying. This isn’t CoD and it requires all the hunters to work together. Unless you have friends playing get ready to get frustrated dealing with a bunch of lone wolfs with no mic just running to their death only to leave you and a partner or two doing the best you can. I do not recommend this game at full price at all. Do what I did and get it for $20. Otherwise you’ll regret it.
dang… i just got my ps4 and bought this just to beef up my game collection but it totally blows! did anyone else mention that the controls can be pretty confusing? can’t believe i broke one of my own “rules” for this one, which is to never pre-order or buy a game on its first day of release until i’ve read enough user reviews…
For the first time I felt Joe was really unfair with a game. That coupled with the fact he’s more of a laid back player, not wanting to really go deep into the game, unless it’s Strategy, and playing an FPS in a console actually hurted his review.
He was pretty misinformed about the DLC and bought up all the bs people were just parroting around. There isn’t a bunch of different confusing packs out there. There’s 3: The Basic Game, Hunter Season and PC Monster Race. That’s it. Basic Game will get you the game, if you pre-ordered it you’ll get the 4th Monster for free when it’s released. Hunter Season will get you 4 new Hunters when they are released. PC Monster Race will get you pretty much everything that’s announced for the game until now, wich is 2 New Monsters and 6 New Hunters. I really don’t understand how that’s confusing. Those are progressive packs, the more you pay the more you get like you’d expect. Nothing even remotely like the mess games like Watch Dogs were.
At least he didn’t say anything about about Day One DLC, as many were accussing the game of having a TON of Day 1 DLC, but there’s is absolutely none. Just a couple skins. Talking about the skins, he’s right, the Hunter skins are pretty meh with just changing the color of the weapons. That was disappointing. The Monster skins are kind nice, but it’s only cosmetic stuff so nothing really important.
Now about the game. He spent half of his video praising how refreshing and great the gameplay is, and in the end of the day that’s the most important part in any game. Lack of a single player campaign shouldn’t be a problem since Turtle Rock never mentioned one existing. It was never a problem with Left 4 Dead. It’s never a problem with Fighting games. No one cares about the campaign in games like COD or Battlefield. People play this games for the multiplayer. And just because you don’t have progressive story to play through it doesn’t mean the game developers were lazy. Talking about story there’s a really background to this game, but it’s runs just like Left 4 Dead or Dark Souls where it’s not right in your face, you receive pieces of it while playing and gotta puzzle it to get some answers. There are also a couple short stories Turtle Rock released detailing the story of some of the Hunters and possible origins of the Monsters. Right now the community are torn between human made and being weaponized by and alien race to weaken to humanity for a future invasion, since Shear, the games planet, is the second one attacked by them. The first one was Factor, wich Maggie is the sole survivor. Creating good level, hunter and monster design, animating, balancing, introducing different Hunters to each class that actually PLAY very differently, same for the Monsters, is all hard work. Games that are focused on those stuffs are some of the most popular games today. In fact games that have a repetitive nature but actually aren’t due to player input through multiplayer also are some of the most popular games today.
About bad player screwing with your game. Unfortunately I heard some horrible things about the community playing Evolve on consoles. But on the PC I can safely say is the complete opposite. I had absolutely not a single friend to play Evolve with when I first bought the game. Now I got a dozen. All those good people, good players, that I met while play Evolve on Steam. And even so I got all those guys/girl to play with I still run with randoms now and then because they simply aren’t that bad. Sometimes you’ll run into a newb, of course, but if you know what you’re doing it’s not that hard to carry him, he won’t be such a liability. And that’s the other point I mentioned, Evolve is a game you got first learn to play and get farily good at it for it to REALLY shine. Your complain about the Supports Orbital Barrage in example, it won’t damage the HUnter but throwing them away is something GOOD in the hands of a player who knows how to use it. You’re supposed to drop it between a Monster and it’s target, so you throw him away form the Monster while heavily damaging the Monster in the process if he tries to pursue. After you start to get good at the game the Hunts start to feel amazing because you’re not just running around all the time, you’re actually hot in the Monsters tail, shooting it and fighting him while he tries to kill one of your guys to get breather and Evolve. The Monsters getting to Stage 3 it just means it’ll be forced to face you now and not that’s Game Over like when it was during your first days playing. You learn how to fight and win against Stage 3 Monsters if they are ever good enough to evade you until then. Altough the thing is, good Monsters players will fight you at Stage 2, because if they ARE actually better than the Hunter they’ll be able to win. Good Monster players will provoke fights and try to ambush you all the time. High skilled gameplay completely changes this game.
I know you’re a busy guy, gotta a lot of other games to review and it’s partially the games fault that it just get so much better after you dedicate a few dozen hours to it. But I really think this review was a bit unfair and gave to much attention to unimportant problems, problems that players who seek games like this don’t care, like the lack of a story campaign.
Anyway, keep up the good work man. Hope you can find in your heart to give Evolve a couple more hours of gameplay, it won’t change your review, but maybe it’ll give you a lot of fun.
The game has over $100 of cosmetic day one dlc. That’s a fact so stop spreading misinformation. This game also has 2 season pass. A hunter one and a monster one. We get it you like the game. Doesn’t make anything about the review wrong.
Two Season passes will really confuse some people, and some of them might get pissed off if they didn’t know it already.
I didn’t know that until after I bought it. This game should be free to play. I’ll be shocked if it isn’t in less than 6 months.
Absolutely false. There is not over $100 worth of cosmetic DLC at launch, there’s around $60. Everybody saying there’s over $100 is counting both the individual skins and the bundles that include them, meaning the cosmetics were essentially being counted twice. So no, its not a “fact” that there’s over $100 worth of DLC. There’s not even an excuse for believing that, because the Steam page only displays $85, and that’s including the Hunting Season Pass.

Stop spreading misinformation.
Lol…. $60 of day one dlc is just ridiculous. For a full price game it should include all day one content, just like any other game. It has 2 season passes and who knows if those will include all future dlc…… Morons defending this game…
Day one cosmetics are fine, and no, they shouldn’t have been included in the game day one because they weren’t made yet.
Video games take about two months to actually be certified, go gold and be manufactured. The majority of the team, especially the art team, has very little to do during this time. Instead of wasting everybody’s time and money doing nothing, they put those people to work, and they need to be paid somehow.
Day one DLC is completely fine, especially when its nothing but cosmetics that have no effect on the game. I’m disappointed that there aren’t more unlockable skins myself, but they’re nothing to lose sleep over. Certainly nothing to get up in arms about. This isn’t like Capcom selling completed, on-disc characters.
It’s morons like you that are the reason we are getting games shorter than NES games…. My God. Day one dlc is never ok. Enjoy Evolve. It won’t even be relevant in 6 months.
I like how I’m a moron for giving decent reasons to back up my claims. There’s nothing wrong with this sort of day one DLC. Not a single thing. If it’s so bad, why don’t you tell me why? I gave my reasons for it, give me something other than calling me names.
Because it’s common sense that this game and games like it are bare bones. 3 monsters is enough to warrant full price!? No campaign, 3 game modes, and all the maps are the same virtually. Then there’s the day one dlc…. Yeah, if you’re ok with games like this being $60 then you are a moron.
Cdproject Red seems to be doing just fine giving away content enhancements for free while making a complete gaming experience and managing to keep it at $60 for said game. It is odd how other companies cant seem to do the same.
@Cagey,
Exactly. There are plenty of companies that do things the right way to support these half assed games like Evolve.
I absolutely loathe when people bring up CD Projekt in these arguments. You know why CD Projekt can afford to put that content in the game for free? Because they aren’t just a developer; they’re a distribution center, as well. CD Projekt owns and runs Good Old Games, and make a ton of money outside of just game development. Using them as an example of how devs should be doing things is like holding Team Fortress 2 up as a successful F2P model.
CD Projekt and Valve are both the exceptions to the rule because they have ways to get funding apart from game development. 2K and Turtle Rock do not. 2K and Turtle Rock do not own two of the biggest online distribution platforms in the gaming market, they can’t have a weekend sale and make enough money to maker twenty games. They can’t throw rubber duckies into a ten year old game and get tons of money for it. It’s nice that they can release tons of free stuff and give back the way they do, but they should not be taken as paragons of how everybody else should do things, because everybody else would go bankrupt if they tried half the stuff Valve and CD Projekt are capable of doing.
Of course any point proving you wrong is an exception, lol…. God bless the internet!
So does that defense work for other companies like EA who have major IP’s that are gauranteed to sell and make them money? Origin has existed for awhile now. Cdprojekt is just the one I could think of off the top of my head. Loathe me all you want pal but bad business is still bad business.
The bottom line is that if $60 isn’t enough for your game(Turtle Rock said that) when it’s enough for Skyrim, GTAV, Fallout, or any other game then you’re in the wrong business. What blows my mind is people fall for this garbage like Prankman here…
first i was really interested in this game when i heard about it. but after reading all about this DLC practice, i quickly lost interest and decided not to get it. even when some reviews gave it a good score, i still did not want it just because of the DLC it self.
jim at least was fairer by giving it a 6/10 but joes review tells me again not to get the game.
i think i will have more fun with revelations 2 tomorrow that is at least not 100$ to get all the extras.
overhyped garbitch
these developers have currently learned that they can give us less for more and that they can get away with it in a multitude of different ways and this shit just is not right.
Amen, brother. The only way to stop this is not to buy these games.
I felt the big reviewers were buying into their own Hype for a long time now, lying to themselves to make the game far better than it is.
This blindness has caused me to ignore the big gaming company reviews thinking its a blatant lie or payed off.
While people still blindly throw money at over Hyped games and not understanding that all the footage shown before release, is the best part of the game and not doing a little more research… expect more like BF4 and Alien: Colonial Marines.
I desperately wanted to buy this on PS4, wanting a new action game that isn’t CoD or BF, the idea is amazing but in the back of my mind I knew I’d get burnt with repetitive gameplay and lack of content.
Very few games deserve pre-ordering or day 1 buys, my next pre-order/day 1 buy will be Batman: Arkham Knight, also looking forward to Kingdom Hearts 3. <— True AAA games.
MKX. Don’t forget MKX. Even if you’re not into fighting games.
Nice! You got a second review in this month! I was thinking of buying evolve, but now I won’t thanks to you. It looks like it can have it’s fun moments, but I don’t think I’ll be buying it after seeing how half-assed it is. You should consider doing a “Next time on The Angry Joe Show” and give a hint about the game you’re reviewing next…
(The Order 1886)
Honestly…? It’s hilarious to listen to the reviewer for Evolve on Polygon talk about the game elsewhere. He’s complained about some of the very same things you brought up Joe, but you wouldn’t get that from his review.
He also has a rather… strange issue with The Wraith as well. He calls it well-endowed (I don’t see it at all), but also attributes its weaker armor and lower health pool towards the fact it is female rather than the fact it is the Assassin-Archetype, and comes with all of accompanying strengths and weaknesses. If he had it his way, it would be harder to kill on top of its already frightening damage output.
And yeah, Wraith is overpowered. It can remain in stealth nigh-infinitely, even while eating and the like. It’s decoy can kill hunters, and using its damage and speed boost also affects the decoy, to the fact it can actually slaughter players with a boosted decoy and little else. Daisy is one of the few ways to detect it, yet as you’ve shown Daisy isn’t exactly… reliable either.
How much longer are we all going to suffer these half assed games that keep getting peddled. Scandalous!!!
As long as people keep buying them.
IMHO it’s not half assed. After over 20 hours I’m still very happy with it and that without dlcs. It’s maybe not goty, but kicks ass aside from the Clunky matchmaking. Sorry AJ, first time I totally disagree.
There has existed a mod to TF2 called something along the lines of “Saxton Hale mode” for years now, were one player goes against a large team of players with on overpowered character, most often Saxton but with a small percentage for special characters based on Gmod videos of ages past. If Valve would turn this mod into a proper game mode they would iron out the “waiting game” issue with the mod (once you die you have to wait for the match to end). Still, it is a great mod if you have a huge group of people to play with and goes right to the action.
Best Hunting game to date? He obviously never played Monster Hunter before. Someone should get this guy a 3DS.
He never said “the” best. He said “one of”, there is a difference there the size of a galaxy.
There’s also the issue of getting into Monster Hunter. It has an odd curve to it’s learning and, if you’re alone playing it, hard to really get into the game. Evolve has a bit of the same problem, like Joe said, but at the same time there’s no worrying about armor and armor skills, maximizing elemental and status effects, and learning the few combos each weapon requires along with their own quirks.
You got your hunters, each hunter does one of four tasks and each hunter for each task has a different way of handling it. Plus, Evolve get’s the edge in having a player play as the monster. In MH, after you’ve played enough you can just fall into a rather simple routine with any wyvern and guarantee a win.
are you retarded? i think you’re retarded let me check……. yep you’re retarded
I agree with Angry Joe, then I still have not received the copy of L4D which was to be given to those who had carried out the prepurchase -.-
Well, try playing Monster Hunter… 40€ for about 300 hours of hunting fun *g*
I miss the days when ya bought a game whitout DLC and microtran and ya still had fun whit it ….. now ya buy expensive 1/4 finished games and ya only get angry and disappointed …
I don’t know how one could think that of evolve. It is finished, all dlcs are later coming addon or skins. I paid full price and am happy. If I had paid 100 bucks for all the unnecessary stuff, I’d be pissed though.
Evolve is a demo. When monsters are your selling point than you need more than 3.
