Any old RE clones that you know?

45 posts in this topic

Remember the times when the old RE is so popular that most games afterward copy it? I'm sure there's a couple of them that you all know about, with the awkward camera angle, the need of pressing R1 to aim and X or square to shoot, or the inventory system that's limited.\

\

Now is the time to get back to the past and unload all the RE clones so we will know and play them for ourselves. No need to be an exact copy, just the ones that reminds you of RE when you play or see it.\

\

I'll start first. There's one game I know of that's a copy of the old RE called Countdown Vampires.\

\

Countdown_Vampires_Coverart.png\

\

Basically RE in a casino with vampires instead of infected people. The cutscenes in the game looks awesome for 1999 PSX standards while the in game graphics, it's passable. It has a unique gameplay where you can choose between stunning a vampire enemy and use water on them to turn them back to normal humans, which I guess will give a good ending in the end but I don't know since I'm playing it right now and I haven't finish it yet, or just blast them with your handgun. There's a currency system in the game which you can gain by scavenging and playing roulette and slot machines, which is very2 weird when you think about it. Why not just break the casino machines and take the money? Oh well this is the time where such a thing is not thinkable. You can also buy items with it through a vending machine such as an energy drink, an energy snack and a water bottle. The energy drink is basically the green herb, energy snack is the first aid spray, and the water bottle is basically the red herb so you have to combine 3 energy drinks into the water bottle to get full health recovery item. You may think why not buy the energy snack all the time, but one vending machine only gives out 1 energy snack so you have to search for another vending machine to buy the energy snack elsewhere. \

\

Several problems with the game though.\

\

1) Your starting weapons in the game are a stun glove and a stun dart, which takes 8 hits to knock an enemy down. Ammo is scarce and the enemies are really fast so you'll bound to get hit even if you hit them from far away. It's not until the later parts of the game where you gain more stronger weapons like the shotgun or the handgun. So in the meantime, run like hell when you see 4 vampires at the same time or else you are dead.\

\

2) There's grammatical errors everywhere. I can nitpick most sentences in the collectible files apart.\

\

3) The voice acting is HORRIBLE! This game makes the voice acting in RE1 and MindJack sounds like the Legacy of Kain series in comparison. The sentences are awkward and the character's voices are so monotonous with ridiculously out of nowhere tone changes. One particular scene has the character screaming and it's so painful to hear because it's 30 seconds long and it's like.... like..... I can't describe the shittyness. It's just bad ok. Here's the opening to see how awkward the voice acting is.\

\

\

\

Uuuuuuugh, it's so bad that I feel a shiver down my spine when I hear it again. Other than that though, this game's fun to play.\

\

So what's the other games you know that's similar to the old RE? Let us know about it.}

Ha, what about Evil Dead: Hail to the King on Playstation 1? Trainwreck of a game.

Oh hell yeah that game is a trainwreck. Cool concept, but infinite enemies ruins the fun.

Next in the line of RE clone is X-Files Resist or Serve.

The_X-Files_Resist_or_Serve.jpg

Yes, an X-Files Resident Evil clone actually exists. Even I can't believe it, though when you think about it the series is a good material for a RE esque horror game. Gameplay's pretty decent too, unfortunately I only played like 15 minutes of it and now I don't know where the game is. Must have thrown it away. Meh, maybe I'll get this game again. I'm curious as to how this game will progress.

I just keep thinking about Alone in the Dark : New Nightmare, Clock Tower, and Vampire Hunter D. Dunno why...

Aha! Great choices! Although Clock Tower is pretty different than RE because your character can't defend herself besides by picking up an object and just smash the hell out of the enemy. Second game is the best because you can play as a more badass character named Bates that has an awesome, yet stupid attitude.

That's right! But we're looking for clones of the old RE game here, not the new one. I mean Gears of War Arkham Asylum has already benefited from the third person shoulder camera angle of RE4 which makes it successful.

I just remembered another RE clone that I played. Its called Galerians.

Galerians_Coverart.png

Its about a kid who has the ability to use psychic powers like manipulating objects, Pyrokinesis, head exploding power like in Scanners and Force push like in Star Wars. You can't use these abilities all the time since you need to refill them with injection guns. Get red liquid for pyrokinesis and green for force push. To use the awesome head exploding power, you need to fill up an energy bar and release it when its full. It works for people, but it doesnt work on the more stronger enemies later. Overall, an awesome interesting game with a good premise. Too bad not many people knows about it. Heres some of the game footage. I feel like playing this game again with an emulator, which I'm going to do soon.

Oh yeah, I just remembered another game. This one's called TRAG. Or in Japanese, Hard Edge.

Hardedgecover.jpg

This is a unique game for its time where in the beginning you can choose which of the 2 playable characters go to in point a or b. after that, You can switch between those 2 characters on the fly, which makes for varied events depending on which characters are located in and makes for great replayability to find all the varied events in the game. Along the way, you'll meet 2 other characters which have their own attributes which can help you get past obstacles, and the game also offers different paths that you can choose from which will lead to different outcomes. Combat in the game varies depending on which characters you have. The main character can switch between 2 pistol rounds, while the others uses melee attacks. I am at the final stage last time i played it, but I got my ass kicked because its too hard. I will get that final boss once I play this game again.

Heres the gameplay in action.

There's also Martian Gothic for the PS1.  It has a lot of similarities to RE and you can switch between 3 main characters like GTAV.  You're on a Mars Base and there's Undead, limited ammo, small spaces, crappy controls and of course GOD AWFUL VOICE ACTING.  I didn't play it much before shelving it for later but it's pretty cheap (got mine for I think two bucks) and might be up your alley.

I just remembered another one. This one is called Deep Freeze.

574744_14523_front.jpg

Basically it's like Rainbow Six only this time with RE camera and puzzle solving. Pretty cool game because you can select which team member you want to bring with you. Picking different team members will give you different cutscene options. So if you bring a computer expert with you instead of a gunner, they'll help in hacking into enemy territory. Of course it doesn't matter in the end since everything is in japanese. It's weird how this game has full english dialogue but it's in full japanese text.

Oh, excuse the graphic and voice acting. They suck balls.

We are looking for old RE clones, not the new one. Try again. But thanks for mentioning that game again! Now I'm actually looking forward to buy it on Steam.

Up next is Men in Black, based on the first movie.

That is some shitty frame rate right there.

if you mean REALLY OLD there's Sweet Home on the NES and Clock Tower on the SNES.

If you mean more recent, I loved the Fatal Frame series :)

Hm, I don't know if Fatal Frame is an old RE clone. The gameplay is unique and it's different than what RE is. Sweet Home and Clock Tower came before RE so those 2 definitely don't count.

About Fatal Frame, yeah is somewhat different but the core gmeplay is still going around a maze trying to find stuff to survive, it's just that your weapon is a camera instead of a gun, but you still need to find film (bullets) for the rest of the game you explore, collect objects and solve puzzles like in RE.

About the other two you are totally right, since they are older that makes RE a clone of them, what was I thinking? IDK

Other games I can think of are Silent Hill and Dino Crisis, but someone already mentioned them.

The only true RE 'clone' I can think of is Parasite Eve, which was actually pretty damn good and easily one of my favs on the PS1.

Never cared much for PE2 even though that has more of the puzzle elements and real-time third-person shooter action with tanky controls that the old RE titles had, but yeah they had the virus, the apocalyptic theme in a modern setting, the grotesque mutations, and even the awesome female protagonist.
