$1,469 steam machine

19 posts in this topic

Your URL didn't work for me for some reason.

That's...well, super pricey really there's no other way to put it, and it's only a starting price. Luckily other companies seem to be making more competitively price machines so they won't all be this crazily expensive.

I don't get it.. It's just a PC w/ Steam OS + Windows that can dual boot.  Why are people calling it SteamBox? It's a PC!

That's a pretty damn expensive PC, Still don't really understand who this is marketed for really. Most PC gamers all ready build there own pcs soooo? It's for people who want to switch from console maybe(And I don't see this since a big reason they don't is pc is more expensive to begin with)? I donno price is way to high anyway or seems to be it didn't really say the specs of it there at all.

No... It's the fucking same. I even use a fucking Macbook for a lot of work but have 4 OS on it... For me it's a fucking PC and a working tool and could even have SteamOS on it when that's released.

It's the same stupidity as with Retina display:

Retina Display, stylized by Apple as Retina display, is a brand name used by Apple for liquid crystal displays that, according to Apple, have a high enough pixel density that the human eye is unable to notice pixelation at a typical viewing distance. The term is used for several Apple products, including the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, MacBook Pro, iPad Mini, and iPad Air.[1] Because the typical viewing distance is different, depending on each device's use, the pixels per inch claimed to be of Retina quality can differ, depending on the size of the display, with higher PPI for smaller displays and lower PPI for larger displays: 326 PPI for the smallest devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad Mini (2nd generation)), 264 PPI for mid-sized devices (iPad, including iPad Air), and 220 PPI for larger devices (MacBook Pro).

Oh it's a fucking LCD (liquid crystal displays) with high DPI..... Oh, thats new!

I am really wondering how they're going to market this particular setup.

1'500 quid is a rather high price, granted it comes with Windows and a Titan.

But who needs a Titan? Especially for gaming.

I feel like the Steamboxes that are priced in competition with the XB1 and PS4 have a better chance on the market, I could be wrong though.

PS: Mac/Steambox are both PCs we just call them that way so people know what we're talking about.

Just like you don't call your Smartphone a Smartphone but an Iphone or Galaxy so and so.

Well if you are so intelligent being you may wish to explain it to us of inferior intelligence.

Ontopic:

It's a bit high price, but the price is not that bad for a PC with that high system specs. Titan card alone is 900-1100$? Will be interesting when we see more :=)

Well yes the price in itself isn't that much of a deal. Its more to who this should appeal?

Because people that might buy a Titan mostly already built their own high-end PC.

And it's too expensive for your average person that just wants to play games from time to time.

Mac isn't different to PC Hardware in any way, the only difference is the OS.

Apple PCs are overpriced if you only look at the hardware.

Considering the specs it lists, it's not that bad of a price. And yeah it's a PC, but it's meant to be a semi-portable PC, that you can carry easily to your friend's house, you can plug it to a TV, so there's no need to buy speakers or monitors. Yeah, a lot of PC gamers just build their own systems and for less money, but the Steambox is gonna save the trouble for a lot of other gamers who either don't have the time or technical know-how of how to build up your own system. And although pricey, it will still probably benefit from Steam sales, and will also probably come with a couple free games for marketing purposes. And in addition, there's gonna be plenty steambox versions, ranging from high-end pricey like this one, to moderate performance but better price, and the element of choice between performance and cost will really broaden up their market niche. Personally, I think it's gonna be the best choice of console.

EDIT: On the other topic, all Macs are PCs but not all PCs are Macs. The term PC or Personal Computer was around long before any OS that Apple or Microsoft put out, all the way back to 1964, when the first PC was marketed by an Italian company (the name escapes me, something that starts with O or something). Up until 1975 or so, there weren't any companies that were creating operating systems, and if you had a PC you usually had to write your own code for it. Now, whatever Apple is saying, Macs are PCs, and they don't differ in hardware from any other PC. It's just carefully worded marketing on Apple's behalf that would make you think so. The only real hardware difference that I know of, is slight improvements on the CPU's architecture to prevent overheating, but that's it.

For the specs that it has listed, it actually looks like its cheaper than building an actual PC with all those parts in it.

The idea of having something that mounts to the back of your TV so that it can stay out of site is pretty cool, but my main concern for this is that it could possibly turn into a house fire generator.

Oh, this was a different one? Sorry! I should have read more before posting.

EDIT:

This one's specs seem to be roughly in the same range for a Pixl Jetpack, but for more money.

Really, id only consider getting this as an alternative for the jetpack if you dont want to get a housefire starting kit.
