Classic RTS/Strategy Game Discussion

4 posts in this topic

The place to talk about several classics many people loved during their childhood. It features from Rise of Nations, Age of Empires, Command and Conquer, to anything that is an old strategy game.

I love. Rise of Legends. I even play it today.

Any of the Command and Conquers up to Red Alert 2 hold a special place in my heart, but I remember Total Annihilation the most fondly.  It's the only RTS game that I can recall back then that seemlessly (for the time) integrated land, air, and sea combat into such a grand experience.

Total anihilation was my first RTS and I played it for 3 years straight learning everything I could about it. I loved that game and still remember it as one of the best strategy games I've ever had the pleasure of playing.

However, for me Rise of Nations is my fondest classic RTS. I played mother Russia so many times because of that OP attrition and looting bonus. I once played a game with three friends. It was 8 hours long. Two alliances came up, Me (Russia) + Germany vs. Britain and Japan. After an hour and a half of diplomacy and econ work, my less strategic friend playing Germany declared war on my British friend. All of Germany was destroyed in 15 minutes, and thinking he had the momentum he attacked me. What followed was a literal 2 hour battle of armoured cars flowing off the assembly line into battle in a single valley while Japanese bombers were attempting air-raids in my fortress city.

After depleting our resources in the valley my superior econ led hundreds, if not thousands of Shock Infantry up the British countryside, our near infinite resource pools were beginning to deplete, but after the fifth hour I nearly won, and captured the British capital, and withstanding the Japanese air-raids I almost killed them off, but my Japanese bro came to the rescue with Helicopter spam which was enough to take the capital back. The remaining hour or two was a slow and painful slugfest pushing me back into my fortress city where I was bombed and artilleried to my fate.

We all turned and looked out the window to see the sun coming up. What was it all for?

Godbless Rise of Nations o7

Empire Earth and Age of empires & 2, were the bomb! Love those games.

Personally i'd want the community to adapt some of the older games ^-^
