Is My Laptop Good For PC Gaming?

8 posts in this topic

I am slowly but surely becoming a PC gamer and I've heard having a good rigg is pretty important, so I decided to let you guys have a look at my specs and judge the power of the laptop I have.  My laptop is an HP Pavilion g6, I have been able to run Team Fortress 2 and even Just Cause 2 pretty smoothly on it, I am no computer wiz so I will give you this link to the information about my computer, thank you.

Note: If there is something missing just let me know so I can find it and link it to the topic.

Its not terribly unfortunate, its not really a gaming rig though.

Imo, the simplest way to go is building your pc. you get the experience of building them from scratch and they are easily upgraded.

Much much easier to upgrade than a laptop...

Unfortunately this is a budget laptop that uses dated tech. Like most budget laptops the biggest problem you got is not having a dedicated graphics card. It uses a last gen chip that just doesn't do a very good job. The only upgrade you can do is spend $~80 to put 2 sticks of 4gb ram in there to squeeze a bit more out of it. You can still play older games on it. I assume you will be primarily using steam so the thing to look for is minimum requirement of 256mb of memory under graphics. Anything higher is really gonna be a gamble.

Well, that's actually okay with me since I don't see any new games that I really want, the newest game I have is Papers Please anyway.

Plan on having a nice external fan to have blowing air away from the exhaust vents.  When you play at home I advise you to consider using a desktop monitor and USB KB/mouse.  Turn the laptop upside down, leave it open with the fan blowing on it, and set the video options to display on the desktop monitor only.

HP has notoriously bad heat management on their laptops.  If you do not take extra precautions and go above and beyond to keep it cool, it WILL burn out in the first year. I speak from experience. I have had 4 HP laptops, all different models, (not by choice mind you)  and every single one had heat issues and did not last for more than a year. Even my Pavilion that was MADE for heavy video rendering, had extra internal fans, and large vents with a copper cooling rail all along the back. I eventually had to pry all the casing off, remove the monitor (Because it was burned out) and have a fan on it. I still have one that works right next to me and I have it open, upside down, with the fan blowing, and it still overheats if I watch any kind of video for more than an hour, and yes, it is clean, I regularly blast it with an air can.

DO NOT use an HP laptop on your lap, as you will most likely block vents and or fans.

I really do not suggest using an HP laptop for gaming, they are very poorly designed. If you have any choice in the matter and are determined to have a laptop, you should look into ASUS products. My friend has an ASUS gaming laptop and it is pretty good for a laptop.

Apologies, next time I post something I'll see if there is a better place for it.
