When games change developers.

So I'm sure a lot, if not most of you, have heard that Epic Games sold the rights of the Gears of War franchise to Microsoft Studios who has now put their subsidiary, Black Tusk (formerly Microsoft Vancouver), to work on a new Gears of War. Now I could make an entire thread dedicated to this news alone and I'm there there are already some out there on the forum but I just wanted to talk about games being made by different developers in general. My best friend is a huge Gears of War fan and he's rather devastated by the news however he's mostly concerned about the story rather than gameplay changes because he felt that Gears of War should have ended at Gears of War 3. He thought Judgement was okay because he felt that they tried to make it more modern rather than just completely changing the game. I pointed out that people bitched and moaned when they found out rocksteady wasn't making Arkham Origins, then bitched and moaned that the game was too similar to the others. People bitched and moaned about the DmC remake and thought that was a lot more drastic than just a simple change in developers, he as a die hard Devil May Cry fan, loved the game even with it's admitted flaws. Going outside the realm of video games I also pointed out that people complained when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker (him included) and that turned out to be one of his favorite portrayals of the character. So getting back to the point, tell me AJSA community, how do you feel about a developer taking over the established franchise of another?

If the developer treats the game with respect and understands it well then I have no problem with him taking it over. However in many cases the situation is quite different when studios acquire the franchise and then just squeeze it dry. The only sure way to know what they think about the game is to check the game when It's released, because up until that point you'll see a lot of hype, trailers and what not that in some cases have nothing to do with the actual game.

Cautiously optimistic.

Not about Gears of War, I wasn't a fan, but about developer changes in general.

After THQ went under a lot of franchises I enjoyed were sold on. One of those is the Warhammer IP which has gone to Creative Assembly. Rome 2 aside, i'm looking forward to what they come up with.

If developers know what to do to please fans and newcomers that is all I need to know

There is nothing wrong when other developer takes a franchise, but they really need to consider on who they are going to give it. Silent Hill is one of the series that has been threw around from developer to another after it started to go downhill. As long as the developer knows what they are doing, it's fine, but when you make another developer to continue game that was started by another, then usually the big picture changes and the game will suck.

It would always depend on who had the rights before and who has it now, and if anything was being done to create a game before it changed. If Bethesda gave Elder Scrolls to CD Projekt and Fallout to Obsidian or inXile I would love that. If Atlus/Sega gave Shin Megami Tensei and Persona to Square Enix I would think that is terrible news.

I'm not a big fan of Dev changes, since they usually break the franchise (though there might be few cases, but I have no idea of examples). And as we know, too many cooks spoil the broth *cough*Duke Nukem Forever*cough*.

If the new devs still do a good job on the game I don't care about changes. Now, if there's a game that has a dev switch, and the new game is vastly inferior(cough, Kotor 2, cough) than the original, then yeah, I'm a bit upset. But it's more just upset that the game wasn't as good as the standard set by its predecessor.

I think its a good opportunity to try something new. people always complain about games being the same year after year, and a new team coming in with a fresh perspective could really help combat that.
