why the hell are the Russians always the bad guys?

69 posts in this topic

I think (in America anyway) we still hold onto the idea that Russia is a world power that is ready to snap at any point even though the Cold War has been over for 23 years. It also doesn't help that we have this idea of what Russians look, act, and sound like and its more often than not that we think they look more like Ivan Drago than anyone else, I should know I've had this problem as well. However, I don't think Russians should stop being villains. Not because Russia is evil (their government, yes, the actual people, hell no) but because like any nationality/gender/sexual orientation/etc. they deserve to have their heroes and villains. And before anyone gets any ideas I mean that you don't get to see many actors of different cultures and backgrounds get to play hero or villain. I think it would actually be nice if we could see a lot more diversity in these fields because most of the heroes in games/movies/TV (again, in America anyway) are white and male and the villains are as well. It would be amazing to see someone else give the whole villain thing a try, not because of they are of a different ethnicity or religion, but because it'd be great to see someone else besides Mark Wahlberg and Ben Kingsley play the hero and villain respectively.

I want to see what happens in America if someone makes a video game where you get to kill Americans :P

and the main reasons why they dont do that is because they wont make much money on the game since the americans are "the good guys".

I think the reason is Cold War. (When US and Russia were in war...kind of.) So everyone makes Russians the bad guys.

Because USSR were biggest threat to USA and "western world" for over 40 years, they occupied entire eastern Europe etc.

Its also western propaganda: "we are good guys and russians are bad".

Sorry for my english - I know its far from perfect :)

I feel there are many reasons, the cold war has something to do with it. But most of all I feel it is because of the accent; I feel American movie makers just hate anyone with a different accent, hence why the British are also generally the bad guys.

Why do the game dev's keep making the Russians the bad guys and most often the Soviet Union?

They do?

You've got to admit - Brits make one hell of a villain. Their voice alone (at least the one's from the ad) make me shiver with excitement. You can't be a villain with a scrawny voice.

Because anyone that lives in a climate as cold as Russia must be evil.

They keep warm by chasing puppies to kick.

But, why aren't the Eskimos evil then?

Eh. Never saw 'em as ennemies, but maybe it's because of my country's history with Russia. We were buddies in the past, and we weren't that friendly with the USA after WWII, mostly because our president told American troops to get the f*ck out of France, so yeah. The Russians never seemed that much of a threat to us, same goes for the USA.

Hell. I'm curious as to why villains aren't French in general since we have a bad reputation by everyone's opinion.

They are.

Why do you think we keep them all on a little ice island?

Can't hurt no one when all the can do is ice fishing and build little ice houses.

I don't know about that. In ''Spec ops: The line you'' started mowing down US troops like flies after the 2/3 of the game or somewhere around the half way.

I guess the reason why game designers don't want to make any games that would US in bad light, or even criticize it, is because it could affect the copies that they would sell. I also heard that US military bases have banned selling ''Medal of Honor'' (2010) on their catalogues. The game got some controversy originally when it was going to name the insurgents as Taliban, but because of the pressure they actually changed it as ''Opposing Force''.

Isn't it obvious? Eskimos keep warm by clubbing baby seals to death. It can't be evil if it doesn't involve the death of sweet innocent puppies, so they're obviously in the clear there.

Besides, a lot of Eskimos live in Alaska. Alaska is in America. And we all know America isn't evil, right?

To those of you who said "no", welcome to the NSA Terror watchlist- don't worry, you pinko-Marxist-socialist-commie-fascist-Nazi-jihadist-athiestic-jaywalkers, we will show you the light of democracy from the end of a fine, American made M16.

The same could be said of the US, considering all the havoc they've caused across the globe... <_<

Any American that wants to depict U.S. soldiers as an enemy is equivalent to Necrotizing Fasciitis.

Now that I've thought about it, I quite like the idea that we Brits tend to be the villains mostly because I feel that gives some sort of authority and power to it. I know that actors love to play the villain more than the hero because they are more interesting and more of a challenge to make likeable. But, when this becomes stereotype that all Britons are evil villains then I feel we have a problem.
