steam OS - can we buy it?

12 posts in this topic

Heya guys.

I was wondering if anyone has any insight as to if we will be able to buy steam OS independently rather than buy a steam machine that comes with it.

I ask because I for one would like to build my own custom bar ebony micro atx pc and if I had the right to buy steam OS I can just install it and I've got my steam machine that works just like the 3rd party ones... right? I've seen some of the specs of the ones coming and not many tick my needs and if they do the price is more expensive than what I could build myself with the same hardware or better.

Any ideas people?

I am pretty sure that yes we can. I know it was at least that way before Steam machines were brought about.

I for one am pretty interested in it. An OS that doesn't run the 90 bajillion background programs that windows does, which serve no damn purpose besides eating up CPU and RAM resources, sounds like something I want.

On a related note. Don't buy a Steam machine. Extremely overpriced and limited functionality. Just like Alienware, you are paying for a brand. You can build a desktop PC that will blow the high end Steam machines right out of the water and into the vast dark abyss of existence for much less than what they charge.  As far as I am concerned Steam machines are a gimmick, at the very best they are a way to lure hardcore console gamers who don't have the intelligence or patience to research and build a PC, into the warm crushing money devouring bear hug of Steams bank vault of money that Gabe N. swims around in like Scrooge McDuck

You probably should not... It is very early and not ready for any sort of commercial use.

I agree, the Steam OS is still in early beta and isn't anywhere near completion. Also, most of the Steam OS functions that are currently being tested in beta are just what would run a barebones system connected to your actual PC (which would be the steam machine). I have the horrible feeling that it's going to be a LONG time before we see anything more concerning the Steam OS being used outside of steam machines.

My plan is that, once all the bugs are worked out of it, I'll dual boot Windows 7 and SteamOS.
