Do you draw a line in Video Games?

48 posts in this topic

Hello AJSA,

How are all of you doing? I'm doing good.. I have a thought come to my head and your find out with me that can be dangerous. Anyways I have a question that might turn into a heated conversation. Please show respect to others awnsers that they might type in this fourm. If I offend someone I will say sorry now cause as we all know being a Christian it isn't hard to offend. I also would like to say I did say I won't force my belifes on to people which I  won't nor do I think of this as Forcing but make your choice and let me know.

There are games I have tried to play and just said "I'm not doing this, don't want to.." Because there was way to much content in the game that isn't just not of God but down right Satanisem was advertised as a good thing. I think this game was named Legendary with Jack Black as main charater in the game. It is based as rock music being a weapon to fight the Evil. It used Pentagrams to save and heal. I don't want that symble in my house let alone in a video game. Something that Adverties Satan and implies that he is cool is were I draw the Line in video games......... Symbles like the Illumanati symbles or Pagan symble are something I do not care to have in my house. Now it is a fine line.. Doom for instance has you going to Hell to kick Demons butte.. That is sweet I think same with Diablo 3. You need to becareful you don't know what you bringing into your house. And just because it is on a game dosen't make it safe.. Were do you draw the line's with games? How much do you allow into your house with your family.. One more thing.. Nudity or Raunchy games. I eaither don't play them or games like LA Noire I wait till my son is in bed. I think there is a big Difference between between games like Nuke Dukum Forever that added it just for gross and shock Value then in game like LA Noire were it is used to exstend the story.. Thank you for reading this.. Please feel free to comment. And go to www.youtube.come/user/travishsw I'm gonna start doing videos about this type of Subject.. Thank You and God Bless

I don't mind when a content creator produces something that might not fit my views to be honest..I've played all type of games with various type of subjects and have never been offended by the entertainment that was offered..I wouldn't allow children to experience any kind of content with strong mature rated themes though..

I like the fact I can play games that don't fit in with my views. Sometimes helps me see the world from a different perspective and not sure I've seen something that's offended me. Not always mind, *shudder* Barbie's Dreamhouse Party...all that pink!

But it's nice that we have that option, to play what we like. And on that same level no one should judge anyone for having lines that they don't feel comfortable crossing. Everyone can be, and will be, offended or made uncomfortable by something. The world is a weird and wonderful place.

Great Comments guy it is awsome to beable to have the freedom to chose what we want and what we don't want to play... It's small things like that, that we take for granted at times..

I never would b offended by something put into a game.

In Bioshock Infinite you are baptized, which I never was, but I wan't offended by any means, I didn't think anything of it.

In Far Cry 3, GTA V, ect, you do TONS of drugs, now even though I am against the use of illegal drugs, was I offended? No.

Even when in GTA V in the torture section, I didn't care, ITS A GAME, made for ENTERTAINMENT. There is almost nothing in games I feel can be "where I draw the line".

I don't get offended by games, but there are things that just piss me off rather hard. Like Agarest's light/ dark gauge. That thing made me not see the perfect ending despite playing the game completely by a guide. In the end I had to miss some important events that led to the 'bad' ending after which I just rage quite and immediately uninstalled the game.

I have yet to experience a game which contained content that offended me but in comparison I have been offended by films (A Serbian Film for instance) and books (Uncle Tom's Cabin) but compared to videogames these are fairly old media. I have been watching a Let's Play of the latest South Park title, which I now regret not playing myself as it looks like great fun, but have yet to be offended by anything contained within that.

I don't doubt there are games out there that would offend me but I just haven't played them yet. There are more than likely a hundred games on my steam library that wouldn't offend anyone that I have yet to play but somehow I have allowed myself to be exposed to other media that would offend me. I do think it is important to have your views challenged but I view games as a different form of entertainment to films, theatre,TV or books and generally don't expect to have my views challenged when robbing banks in PayDay 2 or losing horribly at Hearthstone.

I'm downright offended both as a metal fan and believer in science... I think that's the nicest way I can put this. The game's name is Brutal Legend and there's nothing even slightly evil about it, it represents an entire cultural movement that you just denounced as "of satan" without clearly having the slightest knowledge about it. Hell in fact that's exactly what the Christians did to the pagan religions(and "heresies"*)as soon as they had the strength to do it so I suppose that's the way to go.

*Funny thing, did you know Heresy is actually derived from an ancient Greek word that means choice? Food for thought I suppose.

Some guy told me that some kind of pentagrams are actually healing signs. But if you don't like a game because it has content that is against your belief that's fine. I see no problem here.

Didn't even read his whole post. Found it not amusing and rather badly written. But now I'm kind of sad.

Coming here implying Metal is evil and denouncing pagan symbols as being of Satan, a concept the peoples who created those symbols didn't even fucking know, is a bit of a stretch and I do very much see a problem with both.

I can't help myself but ask what does have to do with anything OP said? And in OP's defense, he did put a disclaimer...

Although, OP should've indeed worded it better.

But anyways, I can see this getting locked now.

Anyways, great food for thought.

More food for thought, many of the stories in the Bible, and some Christian holidays were derived from other religions and cultures!

Back on topic, I have many lines to draw from. Mostly the line of "Is it terrible?"

But there's others out there that are just... Why? Why did you turn that into a game? That's just... no. Some of it from Japan. Some of it from 'Murica. Some of it from the Middle East. But they're all terrible. School shootings, rape, terrorism, "cleansing," and just... Oh man, humans made those things...

Why?

I would totally disagree. The game "Brutal Legend" uses the same shock values like Duke Nukem. Only this time it hits the soft spot of religion to some extend. That is why some people might get offended or troubled. Honestly, I seriously don't believe a game with such humor is of any danger. It was rated 18+ and is targeted at mature audiences only. We are adults and we are able to act and think like adults. At least to some extend.

What really bothers me in this topic is that....Since pentagrams are bad, and this is kind of connected with christian religion...why no one actually cares if in another game another religion is being exploited?

HiRez studios -> Indian pantheon. Sadlyyy, they had to choose the ones that are actually actively worshipped. Indian people complained and even got a petition running. Nothing happned. I bet that if christians complained all hell would break loose and the game itself could be even taken down for the period of investigation.

The Indians complaining about Kali pisses me off. Kali is topless in the damn myth. Why the hell are they so whiny? You don't see Chinese whining about old Guan Yu's red face. You don't see Greeks whining about Aphrodite looking like a whore. That's how they are depicted in the myths. Easily offended people offends me.

1st off, OP never called Metal "of the Devil" just Pentagrams and Pagan symbols (some pagan symbols have been incorperated into christianity but that's another point). The only think I take issue with is OP saying he isn't trying to push his beliefs yet announcing he is a christian and then saying "god bless" at the end of his musing, but that isn't even a big deal either.

As far as what "crosses the line" I'd say nothing. I don't think there should be a line. Obviously if one doesn't like something then simply don't subject yourself to it, just don't push it on everyone else. As far as the kids thing goes, I don't have kids and I don't care what kids play. But yeah, if you don't like something, turn off the game, simple as that.

I can't help myself but ask what does have to do with anything OP said?

Simple, those symbols didn't carry devil connotations until they were appropriated by the Church for many practical uses(but mainly control really as we all well know I hope.) throughout the long history of cultural dominance(monopoly I'd say) that took place since the end of the ancient era. A reversed pentagram and other symbols are as harmful as the Bat signal.

Besides it gets funnier when you realize that the pentagram as an occultist symbol is a recent phenomena from the 19th century and if not reversed it was actually a good symbol in the christian symbology beforehand.

I can understand someone having a faith but to denounce others as idolatry and satan worshipping in this day and age is nigh medieval and on top of that has no place in this forum.

He implies that using "rock" to fight evil is a bad thing, but I might be reading too much into it due to the rest of the argument.

" It is based as rock music being a weapon to fight the Evil."

You don't see Greeks whining about Aphrodite looking like a whore. That's how they are depicted in the myths. Easily offended people offends me.

Firstly, I will ask you a question. Do you see Jesus crushing skulls and scoring pentas in games? No. Why? Because a company would be decimated and reduced to star dust after such incident. That is why. Most probably it would be followed by mass labeling games as tools of satan, tools of depravation of the youth, cause of all evil etc. I've read enough news on Diablo 3, The Da Vinci Code movie and a couple of others.

That myth you are reffering to is actively practiced. Look up Kali Puja celebration on the internet. Maybe that will shed some light into your head.

What is even more, the Greeks are no longer worshipping Aphrodite. I can't even understand why would you pull such an argument up. Do you know what "myth" stands for?

Brutal Legend bugs you because there are symbols there that offend Christians. Smite has some content that offends Indians. In a normal world we would try and be respectful to each other. Sadly it is not the case. Offending Christians in some way is bad. Offending Indians is...who cares?! We can shit on their belief system because they are accross the pond so who would bother? We have one God they have millions. Lunatics!

Easily offended people offends me.

Same goes to you.

I am sure that you could find many examples in which morality and good taste will speak against your statement. Would you play a game about raping women? Would you just turn it off and let others enjoy that? I kind of doubt that.

Blah blah blah. Guan Yu is actively worshiped too, you don't see people whine about him being in games. Kali IS a myth. Believing it really hard does not make her come true. Same thing goes for any god.

Just because you consider it a myth does not change the fact that some people actualy care and widely worship a diety. It is a national celebration. China is not India. Indians are entitled to their own opinion. And so are you!

Anyways, games are entertainment most of the time. There were a couple of titles that were smacked by the majority of gamers. They pushed the lines and got punished. I think most of people will have some sorts of a moral compas and will react if a game pushes it too far. Most importantly, it is all entertainment so we shouldn't see it as a general truth or something. Maybe sometimes small corrections, that do not change the whole artistic vision or game mechanics, could be implemented (Indians complained about Kali's depiction. I dunno, dress her more? That wouldn't change a single thing in the game and everyone would be happy).

Hey gamers,

I knew this had a chance to become a heated debate and sure enough it have's become that. I want to say Thanks for all the good comments and understanding What i was saying even tho I didn't word it the best. I am sorry for the wording of my thought. I'm not a good speller and even at grammer. It isn't only Brutal Legends that I feel that way about.. I don't want it to seem like i'm just picking on that game. I never said Metal is Evil. I changed my style of music.  To help my walk.. I have nothing aginst Metallica, Linkin Park ect...Thank you for the Respect everyone showed on this thread.. Feel fre to send me a Message or a friend invite if you want to hang out on a game some day..

People will always be offended. Instead of catering to a group totally irrelevant to the business they should focus on developing content for those who actually matter to the businees. What the hell are the Indians going to do? Boycott the game? oh wait, they don't have the game to begin with. Let them stay offended. I get offended by a lot of stuff and I get over it. Fuck those whiners.
