Joe Dever's Lone Wolf. One of the best rpgs this year. Available on Steam. GO GET IT NOW!

26 posts in this topic

So 2 days ago I finished my work early in the middle of the day at work and I browsed through the iphone app store. I stumbled across this game called Joe Dever's Lone Wolf. Because it is free, at first I thought it's going to be one of those cheapass mobile games that requires in-game purchases like so many other free games do, but I downloaded it because it looks like an interesting game. So I did, surprisingly took a lot more space than Infinity Blade. And I was so dead wrong about my initial impression. This game is one of the best rpgs I have ever played, not just on mobile, but on consoles and PC too.

You know those "choose your own adventure book" where you read something and the page gave you a choice like "if you want to fight a dragon head on, turn to page 67" or something like that? This game is actually a prequel of sorts to this Lone Wolf choose your own adventure book by Joe Dever. It took place between chapter 2 & 3 of the Kai series. But it doesn't matter if you have read the book or not because the game itself has a solid story that's easy to understand for newcomers. It's like Wolf Among Us where you don't need to know anything about the Fables book which the game is based on to enjoy the game.

The game itself is so unique. It's a combination of reading a book and playing a turn based combat rpg, with a bit of lockpicking here and there. Most of the game is presented in book format, so you read what happens as you progress through the game with cool looking artworks. The cool thing is that during many parts of the book, you are given choices that will determine the outcome later in the game. Say you are currently in a situation where you need to choose how to get an item behind a door. You can choose to either go the straightforward route and break the door down, lock pick the door, or use magic to manipulate objects to open the door. Depending on your choice, the plot will progress differently. And depending on if you choose either straightforward break stuff up, be smart and use traps often or use magic often, you will level up your health, magic and stamina depending on your choices after different chapters of the book are completed.

The combat of this game is what makes me like this game a lot, aside from the unique book format. When you go to battle, the game will change from book format to 3d format like usual games do. The game uses a turn based system and the game looks like this.

LW_Combat_GUI-600x471.jpg

The bar on the top left are your health (red)

Mana (blue)

And stamina (green)

The yellow bar that has a wolf on top is your turn gauge. If this gauge is drained, you can't do anything. So what you want to do is to attack enemies as much as you can during the turn. You have a varied way to attack, which depends on which part of the body you tap. See that blue circle on the character's body? Tap one of them to start attacking.

If you choose the sword, you can do light, medium or heavy attacks. The medium and heavy attacks can let you do combos if you follow the on screen prompt, like flick up, tap a circle or something like that. Attacking will drain your stamina, and if you don't have enough stamina, you can't attack, unless you use a magic spell that allows you to attack without stamina.

If you choose the knife on your leg, you will throw knifes at enemies. These do minimal damage but you can throw as much as you want without using stamina as long as you have enough knifes.

If you choose that middle circle above the potions, you'll do one out of 4 magic based attacks. These varies depending on which magic you choose at the beginning of the game. I personally choose healing, shadow form which lets me dodge every incoming attacks, object manipulation and the fighter spirit skill which lets me attack without worrying about stamina. Healing is awesome because it restores your stamina and health to full, so use it as often as possible.

If you choose that sword on your back, you'll use the super awesome sword Sommerswerd which has 3 special attacks. These uses magic. One is to heavily damage a single enemy and set fire damage on them, the other is to attack everyone on screen and cripple them, which is the best attack because your enemy will always miss their attacks and you can do a counter attack every time. I have not unlocked the third skill yet.

What I like about the combat is it's both challenging and fun, especially when you dodge an enemy attack and counter attack him. Unlike most traditional turn based rpgs, you can fight enemies without ever losing a life if you do the right moves like going to defend mode to dodge every enemy attacks, use abilities that can stun or cripple enemies which makes them miss their attacks, and finish off enemies with a special attack that can give you a huge mana refill for your next fight. It's such a refreshing change to the usual formula of waiting for turns and getting lucky.

I can't praise this game enough. There are things I left out like you can buy items and upgrade items in the item shop, but that's standard fare for rpgs. If you have either an iphone, ipad, android or whatever smart phone you have, you got to get this game. It's for free and there's a season pass that lets you get more chapters. It's worth it.

Are you sure it doesn't install or is it just not downloading properly? It works fine with me. I've been playing it for 6 hours and it's a lot of fun.

How about trying to put the app into your itunes, delete the app on the iphone and put the app back again? Or if it's not downloaded properly, just download it from your itunes in your computer.

It's an App or a game? Is it single player?

It's a single player book + rpg game for smart phones, or android + iphone + ipad. And it's free.

It's a game.

But all Android "programs" are apps (.apk).

I DLd it through the HimbleBundle app, probably that's part of the problem. I'll try from GooglePlay.....

Thanks ^_^

Hi there! I'm Marco and I'm one of the guys from the dev team!

Stumbled on this topic while googling and, impressed by the passion of the OP, I decided to register to give a proper "thank you". We really did put a lot of love and effort in this game and we are really grateful when people appreciate it!

@Puntosmx, regarding you problem with the Humble Bundle version there's a quick workaround: Try to remove the SD card and install the game. We have already a new version that fixes the problem and it will be submitted soon with a surprise.

If you have other questions I'll hang around here a little more but you can also check our social pages:

Our marketing guys are great and, when they're not overwhelmed, they answer to everybody!

Thank you again, hope you'll keep having fun with our games!

Wow, one of the dev himself!

Thank you to you guys for making such a surprisingly good game. I've been dissapointed with most games this year, especially the ones that got delayed that I want so much, but this surprise entry from you guys makes me happy. Props to all of you great developers and Mr Joe Dever himself for writing such a good story.

Oh btw, if you don't mind me asking, when is the 4th arc going to be released? So far I'm still in the second arc and I'm loving it. I don't want to go to the third arc because I don't want it to be over and have to wait too long for the 4th!

Unfortunately I can't tell you the release date of the Act 4 but you can expect a timing similar to the release of the other  acts. Keep a look on our social pages, usually we announce a "period" and later a precise release date. In the near future there will be also other announcements... but I already said to much :D (there's a red dot on my head right now).

If you want my personal advice just keep playing and finish Act 3. Then you can try playing with a different save-slot by making different choices, both for Lone Wolf's combat skills and in the book session. It's worth taking a look!

Gulp, I'll take that answer. Having a red dot is not a pleasant feeling. :P

I'm doing it right now! I'm currently at Act 3, but I don't want to finish it. So I create a new save file with different choices and replay the game over again. It's quite cool that some decisions skip events that I have done before the first time playing. I'll be anticipating the 4th act eagerly. ^_^

Thanks for the help.
Yesterday I managed to install the game by taking the external memory out.... and then go to sleep too late for my health.... it was awesome ^_^

I found the battles tough, tough I always favor not-combat builds in Lone Wolf stories.
Also, the fact that progression mechanics (say, when you master a combat skill) are explained only after you achieve them makes harder for a first-run planning.
Still, the narrative is awesome, the way choices work is perfectly implementes, the lockpicking is challenging but not impossible, and the graphics and transitions between 2d and 3d are awesome.

Thanks for all the work, and may a new generation of gamers find their way into Sommerlund.

Here's a tip for the combat.

Make sure to do random encounters regularly with weapons you haven't mastered. There's 3 types of weapons: sword, mace and axe. Do all the attack types until they are all full. You will want to do this to make combat easier later. Just run around the map, meditate and do a lot of random encounters.

Always use the shield after attacking if you can, or the stealth ability that allows you to dodge every enemy attacks. These abilities are very2 useful because you'll be able to dodge every incoming enemy attacks. If you have healing as a skill, make sure to use it after you attack enemies because healing will refill both health and stamina meter completely full.

Make sure to upgrade your Kai armor and shield. These 2 upgraded will help your battles later considerably. Upgrade weapons too.

Lastly, always, and i mean always use the sommerswerd until you master it because you will be able to deal a lot more damage which makes the later battle easier. Once you get the second ability, use the hell out of that one because once you master it, you'll cripple every enemy that got hit by it, which means they will always miss their attacks and you can counter attack them with ease, a very2 useful attack when you face really tough enemies in the game.

From my experience, this is the kind of game that I want to play on PC. The gameplay is simple, all you do is pick a command during your turn to attack and use different strategies to win against challenging enemies. The combat works like South Park Stick of Truth where during attacks you can press different buttons to increase your strength which makes it very fun to play, and the replayability is great. Regardless of playing on which consoles, this game is still really damn good and I still stand by my statement that this is one of the best RPGs I have played in any console.

I hope the PC version doesn't change a lot of what makes the iPhone game great, I don't want it to be another Deus Ex the Fall. Damn that's a disastrous port.

The alchemy won't change on PC but we added a few features to enhance the overall experience (like video settings, keyboard shortcuts etc...)

At last! The final act of this game has been released! Hahahaha I will enjoy this!

For those that doesn't have an iPhone or android, wait for the 27th November when the PC version is released. I'll let you know if the game is a good port or not. I certainly hope it will be!

Finally, after 23 hours of playing, I have finished this game. WOW. This really is one of the best rpgs I have ever played in my life. That last act and bosses are the best. It offers great challenge and it tests all of the skills you have earned in the game before, creating a great final boss fight and battle. The part where you fight your doppleganger is really cool as well because if you hit him, you'll get damaged, and he uses your skills too! I am really happy that I found this hidden diamond on the iPhone. It's so worth it.

We are finally live on Steam!

Thank you guys so much once again for making this game. I really enjoyed every moment of it. And since the game is already available on Steam, I'll buy that version and play this game all over again. For the Sommerlund and the Kai!

That's why this saga has lived for so long.....

If you haven't, I'd suggest checking the digitalized books at www.projectaon.org

I'll be updating the app during weekend.... I was expecting it could update on Android, but it seems that functionality os broken :/
