Under The Dog (FUNDED!)

It's an anime.

On kickstarter.

Must be low quality, right? Nothing but amateurs and all that indie stuff. It's probably gonna be a generic high school moe slice of life anime.

With that out of the way...

The team behind this are experts and near god like status in the anime community.

To name a few:

Now what's with the dorky name? It's a Japanese proverb I think. I think.

When one is in a situation so disagreeable that they would wish to rather be "under the dog," a place of dishonor, misery, and filth, in order to escape their current state of affairs.

Or as how the writer of the story puts it:

“If your parents, family, or classmates are taken hostage and if you die, your family will die too. If you fail, your family will die. If you run away, your family will die. In such a situation where you are driven into a corner [...] and must kill [your] fellow compatriots.” What would you do? How would you live out your life? Your death? “[...] if you have only the choice of dying, how will you die, how can that death help the world that you have left behind?” This is what it is to be “Under the Dog.”

So what's the story about?

Our enemy is the light of Humanity

The year is 2025 in the city of Tokyo Bayside Special District, five years following the devastation wrought by a specially enhanced groups of terrorists at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Out of the ashes of that desolation, the UN formed a special covert branch headquartered in Tokyo Bay solely purposed with searching out and eliminating the forces responsible for the attack along with anyone even bearing a remote resemblance to them.

As a cover, the International School for Boys and Girls was established for the ongoing covert operation of discovering and recruiting gifted high school students, each with their own special abilities, and to coerce them in the service of an elite death squad. These troops are tasked with ferreting out and exterminating all individuals with powers like their own.

There is no choosing sides for these recruits and failure is not an option. Failure on the field assures not only their own, but also their loved ones' deaths. In order to assure compliance, each agent’s dearest loved ones have been secretly outfitted with a micro cranial bomb and all agent's actions and speech are closely monitored and recorded through a battle chip embedded in their brain. In the event the UN commanding officer determines an agent falls out of protocol, their loved ones immediately suffer the consequences.

So what's the goal?

Well... Not a lot of people know how much money it takes to make one episode of anime. It takes between $100,000 to $200,000.

For this one 24 minute episode (or OVA (Original Video Animation)), it'll take $580,000.

WOAH! Why so much? Why even do Kickstarter?

As I said, anime is expensive to make. Quality anime is a god damn fortune to make.

And these guys are about quality.

As for Kickstarter, Under the Dog is a new IP, and they're hoping if it gets popular they can get it picked up. The reason why they're doing kickstarter in the first place, using backer money, is because they are allowed to keep their creative Independence. We've all seen it before. A game/anime we expect to be pretty good turns out to be mediocre at best because some big shot up stairs who doesn't know jack tells the team making the game/anime what to do and what to put in it for the sole purpose of profit (pandering to the "CoD players/fan service lovers"). Stupid shit. With backer money, they can cut out the stupid shit.

Stretch goals!

They seriously just want to make the one episode, and they're just focusing on that. Their ultimate stretch goal is for a full length feature movie that'll be about $5.1 million. Again, all they want is the OVA, but if someone dropped down the millions, they will make the movie.

Also note that it is the same company (Creative Intelligence Arts, Inc.) that did the Projekt Phoenix kickstarter:

Hope you all enjoyed last weeks’ update with the announcement of the mini game. This week, I’m proud to announce to you that CIA just recently launched our 2nd Kickstarter project, this time for an anime called Under The Dog.

As someone who really likes jrpgs and anime, I seriously hope that this kinda thing is not a one-off, if kickstarter can be a viable way for quality japanese game devs or animators to create their stuff AND have it marketed from the get-go to an international marked, that can only be a win-win for everyone.

Oh and I like the attention they have on who it is that is helping them fund their projects:

PS. Because this is a CIA Project, we have some plans in the works to reward those who’ve contributed to both Project Phoenix and Under the Dog. We’ll have more of those details available when they’re ready. In the meantime, give Under the Dog a look and before we end, here are a few words from Budd and Hiro.

For me it doesnt really matter what it is, it is more the thought and appreciation that counts :)

Yep. They did. Just like anime studio called, Trigger (the fromer employees of Gainax and developer of Kill La Kill) who opened the Kickstarter to produce the anime sequel called, Little Witch Academia 2 which is succeed by earning over $500,000. As now they're earned $625,518 to create the upcoming anime movie called, Little Witch Academia 2. But here, as in September 1, 2014, they're earned $378,326. They need to earned over $580,000 before expired on 5 days left. Trigger get successfully completed. But Creative Intelligence Arts, LLC need it to order produce the anime show by raising over $580,000 until higher than about $650,000 before it's too late.

Hideo Kojima endorses Under The Dog

“Coming with the permeation of the internet [in our daily lives], “creating” and a production’s “financing” structure have changed significantly.

Now, new methods of “creating” are being put to the test, where direct communication between the creator and the global user has become the norm and the creator is not bound by the former traditional investor or clientele. In such circumstances right now, a writer with remarkable talent, Jiro Ishii, who brought to the world numerous renowned adventure games during his “salary man” days, has now taken up the torch in order to challenge the traditions and establish this new future of “creating.” This is “Under the Dog,” the crowdfunding effort for an indie anime based on Jiro Ishii’s original story.

One cannot help but pay close attention to this project. One cannot help but cheer on this project. In particular, how can this creator who garners cult-like popularity catalyze a new chemical reaction [in the industry] by putting an emphasis on “creating,” which stands apart from the typical commercial oriented projects? One cannot help but look forward to this succeeding.

Jiro Ishii’s indie challenge will not only change the path for “creating,” but at the same time declare the answer for the question: Can game designers be accepted by the world as storytellers in [other mediums] as well?”

They have about 100k over their original goal, so hoorah! They also set up the official site for it (click the image below for site).

Expect updates (and possibly paypal so late funders can... well... fund) and such to be on their site.

As for those bummed about there being no second episode/movie, don't fret! Never know, there may be a private investor interested!

I'm really glad this got funded. It's nice to see something original rather than an adaptation of something else.

This is definitely on my Plan to Watch list now.

Just checked out the kickstarter page to get more info and thinking about donating. They smashed that target :D

They gave a lot of good rewards for donating too. $60 would get you a copy on Bluray. That's not bad considering your intention is to fund the making of the anime and you get the final product which could cost approx. $40 anyway.

They even had a couple people give $10,000 :D
