Kantai Collection

9 posts in this topic

I like Japanese stuff.

Japan seems appealing (at times).

Anime is (mostly) great.

Their video games, albeit quirky and odd and... different (which in of itself is good), are fun and can have kick ass stories.

But I don't really follow some of their niche-ier stuff.

Like making battleships personified as ladies (or rather as "lolis").

For example:

So can someone explain to me this Kantai Collection stuff? And what it is?

Is the only real appeal (rhyme!) is the girls?

I'd find out for myself, but I don't want to google it and get some weird doujin stuff. Which I'm sure there is plenty of considering the stuff I saw trying to find the above picture.

I want someone who plays this game and understands it to explain it to me.

And what's with the monster girl battleships? They uh... look cool. Yeah. Cool.

If someone made a show about monster girl battleships flying to save the galaxy with massive fanservice

I'd die happily.

Now about the Kantai Collection, Its basically Waifu: The Card Game, with tons of different girls ships. The Appeal is that it caters to both the straight and machine fetish, not to mention having your waifu collection in decks are great.

It's basically the fan-service edition of Touhou, except cards.

Is it still invite only? I remember that when it first came out you had to follow the developers on twitter to see when they announced the lottery for invites

I don't play it but I considered it awhile back. I watched some videos of gameplay and saw that the user did pretty much absolutely nothing during battles and I thought that the gameplay was non-existant so I decided not to play.

However I know a guy that does play it who seems to have a decent head on his shoulders, and I asked him why bother playing it when there is no gameplay and if you just want the moe girls you can just get the art from pixiv or booru or whatever. He said there WAS decent gameplay, and that the challenge was in the preparation for battles, selecting what girls to use and what formation or something. I guess it's kinda sorta like a debt heaven game in that regard? I dunno.

In any case if you research further you may wanna keep that in mind if you too see nothing done by the player during battles.

That said I don't actually watch anime or read manga and I find "great" shonen stories to be pretty juvenile most of the time...but I just looove moe art! SQUEEEEE.

Since I'm played and on level 73 let me explain...

Kantai Collection or Kancolle in short is Japanese web browser game. Quite popular in Japan almost surpass Touhou. You take a role as Admiral or "Teitoku" to command anthropomorphic ships called "Kanmusu" or Fleet Girls. There are mostly based on real-life World War II era ships. Mostly are Japanese Ship but they added 3 German Ships (Bismarck, Z1 & Z3) so far.

What's make Kancolle interesting that all of the Kanmusu characteristic & personality are almost identical to real-life history counterpart.

Ex:

Taihou has lowest luck stats in the game because in her real-life version, She sunk six hours after a single torpedo hit all due to an inexperienced crew, serious design flaws, and poor damage control.

Taihou with her real counterpart

Kongou who can speak some "Engrish" also a Tea addict due All parts used in her construction were manufactured in the U.K.

Yukikaze has highest luck stats due she is one of the ships that survived World War II

You can check Kancolle Wiki if you interested more on Japanese Ships History or just see cute girls  :P

For the Gameplay itself it just PURE RNG. This is RNG-based game so it really test your luck if you want desired or rare Kanmusu. It have equipment management like equip cannon, AA-Guns, Torpedo, Turbine, Radar, etc to make better stats. And some Strategy like which formation to you use in beginning of battle, What ships in you use in your fleet to counter enemies ships / win the battle. Sadly All battles are done automaticly. You cannot direct control you Kanmusu, And this why this is RNG-Based Game.

Although It have some microtransaction in it, there is no P2W element and it's not force you to spend money. Mostly Microtransaction is for customizing your room, added more slots for Repair & Contruction docks & wedding rings (Yes, you can marry your own kanmusu.Although, It's limited to marry once in full F2P).

So far I'm still enjoyed it. I just played for leveling, hunting rare ships (RNG-God always smile on me), doing sortie or you can PVP with other Teitoku. If you don't like this type games just stay away or wait Kancolle Anime in next year if you interested.

I think part of the appeal is that Japan also likes personifying stuff. Just take a look at OS-Tan, Mecha Musume, Neptunia and Strike Witches. I'm honestly surprised "Rail Wars" isn't a show about personified trains. Heck, I wonder if personifying Pokemon started there. And really, BLESS THEM FOR ALL OF THESE!

There's also an arcade version as well, which I really, REALLY want to play. Seriously, if they ever ported it to PS4, I'd probably stop playing the browser game altogether.

Please create a new thread next time instead of bringing back one that is three years old.
