Elite: Dangerous

My computer is a good one and it can handle games like War Thunder, Red Orchestra 2, and all the Total War games very well. And yet, as soon as i near an asteroid to star mining it, I receive around 10 fps! I can't understand why. I have lowered the graphics all the way, but that doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas, help and advice appreciated.

Its an issue on Frontier's end, not your PC.

They still have a bit optimizing to do with the game, and are aware of the FPS issue near roids.

They have almost completely fixed the stuttering and FPS drops when getting close to planets in Supercruise speed, wich have been a problem since Beta 3 launched.

On tuesday, the final beta patch should be released, so hopefully it fixes the roid FPS drops.

It is airplane dogfights in a pritty skybox. Why the hell does my spaceship handle like an airplane? Those 2 are completly different. A spaceship exists in a vaccum, why the hell can't it turn faster? Why is the up/down turnspeed faster than left/right?

This is likely because the spaceships are all designed to be aerodynamic. They're a mixture of "spacecraft" and "aircraft". It's just the design and the universe which has been since the original Elite games. This is why your ship will eventually be able to enter the atmosphere of planets as well in the future =) So there are good sides to the designs!

Just got access to the single player scenarios yesterday and had some fun with the first few missions after setting up the controls. Got comfortable with Voice Attack in WoW and also putting it to good use here. All the buttons on my HOTAS are a little confusing, but combat was very exhilirating even if the first missions are easy. Will be interesting to turn flight assist off once I get more comfortable with a joystick.

Aiming was really tough until I noticed yaw was was inversed, lol.

So far first impressions were good. The tutorial might need some work, but I'd seen a few videos and read a bit on the game before playing, so I knew about efficient turn rates, deploying hard points, power distribution and such. So the tutorial not mentioning this didn't affect me.

I'm not sure how flying in space is supposed to feel, but I very much felt like I was a space ship pilot when playing this, even with flight assist on. Space games I've played in the past have been Elite Plus, Free Space 2, Freelancer and Darkstar One, although Elite: Dangerous is the first time I have a stick.

Official cinematic trailer: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=I6peGu2yG6o

Wow really?

The main point of my entire critisism, that the way ships handle is pure crap in this game, and they actually advertise with ships that turn fast, dispite that not being in the game?

That's just false advertisement right there

From 0:10 to 0:14 = "Not actual game footage".

Its a cinematic trailer. They are always blown outta proportions.

Not actual footage is not the same as 'looks NOTHING LIKE THIS'

Almost no cinematic trailers are as the actual game. Not sure why it's suddenly a big deal it's not 1:1?

Heeeey, you almost get it now! Awesome...

But yeah, that "looks nothing like this" can be applied to more or less all cinematic trailers.

They are not meant to show actual gameplay, they are there to look shiny and make it more tempting to buy the game.

Basicly, a tool to increase hype.

I mean, jeez if WoW actually looked like its cinematic trailers, I would never have left after just 4 years.

From playing yesterday the game clearly is a lot more polished than I expected it to be. I think this is also the first MMO launch I've participated in with ZERO day 1 server issues.

My biggest pet peeve is landing in spaceports. It needs either a flight path to show up in the HUD or have the ship's computer take over or otherwise it'll take many tries in the training simulator to get it right. I have yet to play the game due to having to do the training tutorials over and over again.

It will come. I've spent many hours in the docking tutorials back in Beta 2.

It is possible to buy a docking computer, but not even that is 100% perfect. Although I never had any serious accident with it. Common reason why people dont use it, is because it takes too damn long to dock with it lol.

If you have problems finding the station gates, there are arrows pointing towards it, on that little HUD model of the station (The borg cube stations atleast), to the left of your radar.

Terminals/outposts dont have this, but they are a lot easier to find the pad on.

Otherwise, keep your speed low.

During docking, deploy landing gear before reaching the gate, to lower your max speed and auto-disable Boost.

During undocking, keep your landing gear deployed until you are out.

Keep a close eye on the gate, as sometimes you wont really see the other ships docking, until they are already passing through the gate shields... Sux having to do last second evasive maneuvers, cause a Type 7 suddenly pops up infront of you.

Atm, there is a bug, where the landing pad lights/number dissappears, or pops in and out... If you cant find your pad, use the little direction instrument, to the left of your radar. It will point you in the right direction.

I managed it in my first attempt, despite being a complete n00b to joysticks. Maybe I'm ace? :P

I'm trying different controller methods to see which works the best for me. I first used a spare Xbox 360 controller and next I'll try keyboard and mouse. Lastly I'll try out my Joystick the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro since I don't want to have to get it and plug it in every time I need to use it. unless I need to.

I just got that but haven't payed the $8 yet for the non-trial version and I got today a Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X. HOTAS means Hands on Throttle and Stick. I got a profile for the controller off of a thread about it in the Elite Dangerous forums.

Currently I'm looking at another thread that talks about using Voice Attack and has some profiles for that.

I just picked up the game, I'm no good so far, yet i find it addictive. My grand goal right now is to earn enough credits for a cargo ship, because I know I'm gonna suck at combat 'till i can get enough cash to get a good ship with the auto aiming blaster and rockets like the two on one tutorial gave me.

I'm gonna guess that because there is no guilds, and people are stuck in random systems that it is hard to try and group up (for now)

Only been shot down once by another player so far, although a NPC pirate did force me to eject my cargo once :'(

Well, you can always earn money in Solo mode, and go to Open once you've in a bit better ship, unless you really want to play in Open ofcourse.

NPC Pirates can be easy to avoid... If you are only trading atm, fly with 4 pips in engine and 2 pips in shield. If an NPC interdicts you, spam your booster as much as possible to get distance.

Start charging your FSD when you can, and you should be safe.

Ofcourse all this depends on the enemy ship... If its an player, you are probably screwed...

A valuable thing to remember is, NEVER undock if you dont have enough cash to cover insurance of your ship. Or atleast go solo-mode then, to avoid players... but do beware of the many other dangers in Elite.

Some ways to earn a "quick" buck, is doing Rare commodity trading. It brings in good money, but takes a while to fly around for it and do require a bit of cash to get started. Basicly, rare commodity increases in value, the further you travel to sell it, and maxes out at about 160 Ly from the buy location.

Suggest reading a bit in this thread about it:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=84884

And here is a nice route to take in a Hauler, Adder or Cobra.

http://eliteraretrader.co.uk/?route=83,51,52,23,72,62,1,30,77,55,79,83&name=route

A couple of longer routes:

http://eliteraretrader.co.uk/?route=83,51,52,23,72,62,66,16,41,86,3,14,22,63,73,67,47,18,19,70,81,6,84,31,1,30,77,79,55,36,13,26,29,83&name=rare%20route

http://eliteraretrader.co.uk/?route=83,51,23,52,72,62,25,6,84,31,1,30,77,55,79,67,73,22,16,83&name=Big%20loop%20mk%201

Oh yeah, for trading/exploration, a simple thing to remember is, "D" class modules are light weight and increases your jump distance.

Dont bother with guns on a trading ship. Sell them to reduce ship weight.

Power Plant, Power Distributor and FSD module, are 3 extremely good things to upgrade.

Shield Bank Cells do take up a slot, that could have been used for Cargo Shelves... But a Shield cell could save your arse and cargo.

.

I have to play open mode all the way, despite the fact is seems utterly impossible, i hold out hope that maybe, just maybe, I'll be the 1st to triple elite for the prize :P

My only hope i think is that if EVERYBODY else gives up on open mode, and upgrades in solo..... a slim hope but damn it I shall cling to it.

I am considering selling out my weapons (because let's face it, i'm not attacking anything without a better ship/guns anyways) and getting advanced scanner and mining tool + refine unite

Fair enough hehe, but I think you better hurry up then... A couple of days ago, someone claimed to have reached Elite status in Combat already.

If you choose the mining path, then I wish you the best of luck. I tried it, and it still needs a ton of work.

We are still waiting for a asteroid scanner and possibly drones or some other mechanic to pull in chunks with. Just dont mention Tractor beam on the official forums... The vets will chew on your arse for it.

If you wanna explore, the advanced discovery scanner is amazing. Just remember a detailed surface scanner aswell.

Nutter made a pretty good guide for getting started.

What system are you in. I'd be happy to be an escort for you while you mine. My Eagle is equipped well enough to handle pirates.

Well I'm still debating weather I should upgrade to a cargo ship for some wheeling and dealing, or an exploring ship to just fly out there into deep space and earn credits by selling the data I collect. I am leaning towards explorer simply because I sometimes have to wait for 5-10 min just to dock when there are a 1/2 dozen sidewinders waiting to unload their scrap metal hauls. At the moment I am still in my noob ship and wouldn't be to upset if i get murdered every now and then. And to be fair I've only been destroyed once...... well unless you count getting blown up in a REALLY bad landing attempt.

For the record though My starter system that I am hanging around is LHS 3447, and my character is named Jack Schmit

I am thinking that we should try to get as many AJSA members as we can grouped up for some fleet action at some point, perhaps even a once a month, or every few weeks type of event. It would be awesome fun I should think even if we only got say 10 ships cooperating in TS3.
