Anyone Surprised at Shadow of Mordor?

8 posts in this topic

Right from the very get go, the internet was ablaze with how the game had copied the combat system of Batman: Arkham City and the sneakery and general stabbiness of Assassin's Creed (Although lord knows how long its been since the AC series actually was about stabbing).

There seemed to be overall a very negative outlook on this game, as potentially whatever pros this game may have had, it would no doubt be superseded by its alleged plagiarism.

However, when the reviews for Shadow of Mordor came out with glowing remarks and calling it a "fresh" and "polished" title, people seemed to be very surprised. Even with this, people refuse to believe that Shadow could possibly be of any good.

Personally, I thought it was going to be rather bland, but in actual fact, it turned out to be terrific.

What are your opinions on it? i think it's a very very fun game, and had great emergent storytelling, what with the minion system.

(Also, I think it would be great if Joe did an angry review on this).

I had no thoughts about this game plagiarizing lol but, I thought that it was going to be just a mediocre game. So I am pleasantly surprised, as im more than usually right about this. Im glad to see that it apparently turned out to be decent, its on my radar now. LOTR RPG? Yes please. Definitely, not a day one purchase for me but, might grab it when price drops.

Honestly ive been waiting for a new LOTR game for a while now. the most of them were deeply disappointing.

However i think this game might be quite enjoyable as it does provide you with a large open world and such.

My Expectations of Shadows Of Mordor are not as big as the expectations i hold for Dragon Age Inquisition

I only pray that they wont fuck up the general lore of the  LOTR Books and the books adding up to the same universe

Tolkien is a great story writer.

The only games i enjoy that are part of the LOTR universe are

1. Lord Of The Rings Conquest [Primarily due to the general battlefield feeling it provides large battles loads of killing

2. Lord Of The Rings War in the north [primarily due to its quite sexy coop mode]

Remember those old LOTR: The Two Towers and Return of the King games of the XBOX and PS2 days? Those are the games I liked. Never got into the LOTR games for the 360/PS3 era because, I would hear that they were mostly bad. Maybe an oversight on my part but, those two older titles is what my cousin, brother and me spent hours playing on our xbox in those old days, lol, like 10 years ago or so. Do you remember that before all these games there was an older LOTR game unrelated to the movie franchise? I never did get to play that one.

I was on the fence about this game since its inception, because what video game based off a movie/book franchise had actually brought the goods last gen? but after some of these positive reviews I actually think I'll be getting this in the near future.

We already have a thread on this, it's not plagiarism unless you want activision to pay id for inventing the FPS, Blizzard to pay Westwood for the RTS, everyone to pay David Brevik for the ARPG and the entire world to pay someone, maybe Cugnot or Benz for ripping off his car concept. But that's a bit beside the point, does anyone trust reviewers anymore? It could be for all we know that one influential member of their circle might be in bed with the lead designer, story writer or something of the kind, now we'll never know ever again.

I'm skeptical myself but I saw it for $30 in a local online shop, thinking of getting it.

Arkham Asylum is based on comic books and the creators have actually read Batman for once(sadly different from the movie makers.)

I'm going to lock this thread because we already have one on this topic here: http://angryjoeshow.com/ajsa/topic/23262-shadow-of-mordor-hopes-and-fears/

So please head there and discuss, there is no point having 2 threads on the same topic.

Thread locked.
