Civilization - Which is best for first timers?

7 posts in this topic

I want to start playing Civilization and have never played a strategy game like it before. (I mostly play Total War and Divinity Dragon Commander) Do you think it is worth getting Civilization Beyond Earth when it comes out (I'm UK) or is there another Civilization you would recommend for beginners in the series?

Thanks for your advice!

Well, Civilization 1 through 4 are quite different from Civilization 5 and Beyond Earth so if you want to play now, start with Civilization 5 as it at least uses the same map style as Beyond Earth (hex tiles) and no unit stacking. The previous games use square tiles and allow unit stacking which has massively different strategies.

Beyond Earth is going to be quite different in a lot of other ways though, especially to science, so if you just want to wait you'll likely be just fine. I think it'll be pretty easy to pick up on after just a few games.

Civilization 5 is a fantastic game though when you add in all the expansions, so certainly take a look, especially if they put it on a good sale.

Yeah I would say Civ 5 is a good starting point, from what I hear since I have not played it myself Beyond Earth is different in the sense that there are many tweaks to 5 (Only what I heard, take what I say with a grain of salt)

beyond earth is god awful and a massive disappointment to veteran players. Boring as all hell.  I still play it but need to load about 25 mods to make it kinda fun.  Play civ 5 and pick the Brits build 4 archers and 4 ships of the line and you will win that game guaranteed.

I recommend you maybe get Civ 5. You will likely have a lot of fun on it than previous Civilization games (atleast I did). I don't know much about the new Beyond Earth but I heard Civ 5 is better. However, if your computer can't handle Civ 5 then I would go for Civ 3. I personally didn't really enjoy Civ 4 but it's all up to you.

While I can't recommend Civ 5 or Beyond Earth, I actively play Civ 4, mainly the Caveman to Cosmos Super Mod. I've started (a LONG time ago) with Civ 2, then Civ 3, and currently Civ 4. I am looking forward to Civ 5, but I probably won't play Beyond Earth. I've heard its a lot of "meh".
