Hey!

Hey whats up everyone my name is Kevin and today I am here to talk about the new youtube comments...

If you aren't aware, Yes youtube added a new comment system, and Yes most people do say it sucks

Now don't get mad and think I am going to try to defend it because that would be a terrible decision for my sake

I made this so my fellow community can discuss the new youtube comments, and if you haven't had any experience with them yet go to youtube and see the insanity (I mean really no limit to text!!!)

-Kevin

I would try it, but since they decided I have to have google+ to comment I guess I won't be commenting on youtube anymore.

I dunno what they are trying to do, well I do, but why? It is terrible, the way it used to be before was so easy to understand and it was so easy to see what was going on, but now there is just penises and nazi signs everywhere in the comment field, which is just F***ed up... Oh cruel fate, why art thou doing this to me?

New system is just a desperate attempt to get people to use Google+, it's total cancer, nobody likes it.

I like the notifications system, but I have a very small channel. There are some nice quality of life changes to it too. However, removing character limits and allowing links is NOT GOOD and is part of the current problem. When your issue is people talking like idiots in your comment section, you don't give them more room to be idiots while also allowing them to post links to viruses or worse, even more idiocy.

It's a decent idea and I can see some of the logic behind it, but like MOST changes of this sort, it's implemented very poorly.

Out of every Youtube update I've seen since I joined in 2008, this one is the worst of them all. I have never, EVER, seen so much of a clusterfuck until now. If Google doesn't fix this up soon, numbers will drop like a meteor shower hitting Earth.

The ridiculous thing is that to comment you must have it. If it's optional i wouldn't mind, but Google is so big on integration nowadays that it's getting too ridiculous

Doubt anyone is gonna read this but here is my opinion, it is great.

It encourages actual discussions now, only thing that sucks is the google+ being shoved down your throat, besides that I think it is is good and people will get used to it if, that is if google doesn't cave in to these mouthbreather's "petitions".

It's bad. It's explosively apocalypticly bad... and you should totally get rid off it. Sign pols or whatever there is to get it away.

It's broken, it's user-unfriendly, it's worse than the comment section before. Alone this last argument is enough to validate my point and the point of almost everyone else.

Alright, wish me luck.

I love the new comments section. THERE. THERE I SAID IT. I think this is a great first step to cleaning up the absolutely atrocious excuse of the YouTube community. Now instead of just seeing 2, sorta sometimes meaningful comments at the top, that's all you see unless specified otherwise. You see the good comments, not the stupid asshole trying to piss everyone off. Unfortunetly, there are still people being generaly douchbagerious in there, but give it some time. The fact that the comments are threaded actually makes it bloody possible to have a discussion, and let it be seen pretty easily. They tried with what they had going before, and it worked okay, but threaded comments are where it's at.

Now here's the problem. Yes the fact that Google+ is shoved down your throat is RETARDED. NO ONE USES THE DAMN THING. EVERYBODY HATES IT. But they know that there's nowhere else to go but Youtube, and if they start restricting off features unless you use Google+, people will sign up. And even if just a small portion actually uses the damn thing, that's a win. And like I said you see the stuff that people have voted to the top, which, I mean it's at the top gotta be good right?

NO OF COURSE NOT WHAT ARE YOU CRAZY!!!!!!?!!?

People just upvote the stupidest shit, like in on the "Join The Angry Army [AJSA] Now!" video, there was just a stupid copy and pasted picture of Hitler. Really. REALLY!?!?!? And the worst part is, the only reason it's there is because someone thought it was funny, and upvoted it. It adds nothing to the discussion, and is frankly just plain retarded.

My problem with the new comments section is that it seems to decide what's relevant based on an algorithm made by a machine. It's not organic at all.

The anonymity present on Youtube is a very powerful tool. No longer do you have to go through a network or publisher to spread content out or to share your opinion. The latter is particularly interesting. There could be a controversial topic you want to discuss that you may not feel comfortable covering without that anonymity that Youtube can provide. Google's desire to link everyone's Youtube identity with their real world identity through Google + undermines this; yes, Youtube comments can be very vile and abusive. These are the concessions we make to have this network of information and content that is freely distributed. Giving everyone a "face" through their Google + account won't deter the trolls, just the ones who may have something controversial and potentially interesting to say.

I feel like there's a disconnect between the ones making these decisions and the people actually using the service.

That is a reasonable explanation on why you like the new Youtube layout. People can't shoot you down because of it. It's your opinion and it must be respected whenever the person likes it or not.

I can see where the idea was for the comments. I can. But the cons far outweighed the pros in this situation. In my opinion,

A comment is not a book. You are not writing a novel when commenting on something; if you have that much to say, I recommend a blog. It is a comment, a short one to three sentences describing something about the video above that you liked disliked, so on and so on.

The youtube comment section was already horrible. It could be about the simplest thing ever and somehow people would get involved with full on fights about racism or how so and so is better than so and so. I never went to the comment section because any sensible comment was immediately flooded over with a mass of spam, meaningless fighting and just overall BS.

Now, we have a slightly improved system trusting people who can't be trusted to behave like adults, while requiring them to sign in via a whole different site in order to post said comment. This... is just, not a good idea. Now, we have pornography sites being posted, meaningless links that can and will contain viruses that will infect your system if you click on them. If you want to see a real situation where this has happened, I recommend you watch Nerdcubed's soapbox on the new comment section.

Youtube comments are now reduced to people posting a single sentence a billion times over, posting countless images made out of icons, some of which can be very offensive to people. Google needs to take a step back; just because you own the sites does not mean they need to be fully run together. Youtube is the biggest video sharing site out there, and it is quickly looking at a future collapse, leaving many people who make a living off of the site out in the rain while affecting a absolutely huge community of site visitors. If Google does not take the necessary steps back; I guarantee they will lose Youtube and all profits they make from it.

i wish youtube was never sold to Google... as much as google is helping to "improve" our tech, theyre destroying simplicity. Google is gonna try and take over this world.

While I understand why is Google trying to make this (to bring more people to G+), it is a confusing mess. I mean, even the channel integration into G+ was a mess, I accidentally created maybe 6 channels and it was not easy to get rid of them.

I am not opposed to it on the whole, from my experience I think G+ is cool social network, but this integration was simply done very badly...

With the new google+ integration people can spam links to anything they want. And comments can be paragraphs long. Good lord what has gotten into google :C come back to us google.... WE MISS THE OLD YOU *sniff sniff* YOUR NOT THE SAME ANYMORE!!! *sobs* I WANT A DIVORCE *sobs harder and runs into the bedroom and slams the door*

Well... As far I'm concerned, I don't like the fact that instead of green for positive points now is blue. It's quite distracting. Also, the length of the comments is not an issue to me... But, is a tool for trolling and can mess with the webpage performance.

I don't no why, but most of the changes that Youtube has integrated are disliked by most of the people.

I completely agree. If a stupid comment is prioritized now, it's because people upvote it. That means we have ourselves to blame. The idea is that we collectively moderate what comments are relevant/funny/interesting/whatever people want it to be. This system is only as flawed as the YouTube community.

Also, for anyone saying that the unlimited character limit is stupid, they adressed that by letting you collapse comments, and having them collapsed by default. When you see a comment that goes "Wanna see a problem with the new comment system?" over and over, just ignore it, and you'll be fine.

Very valid points. It seems the issues that arrise from the new comment section, isn't actually the comment section itself, it's the people using that comment section. If you look at say, Reddit for example, they have a comment section very similar to this, a main difference being you have to go out of your way to get to the comments section which I think also helps cut down on the BS. 75% of the stuff I see posted would instantly be downvoted to the very depths of oblivion, but on Youtube it is laughed at and encouraged.
