Getting sick of Sports Games being rehashed every year

28 posts in this topic

EA released several sports games like Madden and FIFA every year but with no differences whatsoever, when is EA going to stop making those type of games? BTW, I'm not a Sports Game fan.

It's EA. Also, Sports games are like that, I really dont understand what you could change except graphics, physics and such stuff. You can't make a storyline or anything and all you do is play sports. I think every sport game that comes out will be the same, with graphical/physics changes from time to time. There is not much you could change about it.

EA have been using the same physics engine and base graphics engine on FIFA for well over a decade now. That's why they were able to port FIFA14 to the Playstation 2 (I'm really not kidding, that actually happened). True, the physics engine is probably perfectly fine for the level of programming required for a game like that, but it's still cheap as hell on their part a blatant cash grab on people foolish enough to pay full price for a fresh team roster every year.

I keep saying the same thing to my mate every year and i always get the same response.

New team lineups and its the best looking one yet.

Really?  It looks pretty much identical to the last one and they still havnt figured out how to stop your player carrying on running half the pitch AFTER you let go of the stick!

They should release then every 2-3 years i mean ffs come on they even added a feature that changes the team lineups in real time!!

In my middle school wildlife observations, I have come to conclude that the alpha male features the latest FIFA (or PES, normally both) that has come to that date, and those that do not possess such item are subject to moking and separation from the group. Most commit suicide afterwards.

Honestly I don't know what's up with that, but I can guarantee you it sells. And EA wants money over anything.

For me, I can never fully comprehend how to play the game. I never will.

Believe me, you're not alone. I honestly don't see the point in it - even Call of Duty is not that bad. (Yes, I said it, alright.)

Just to be clear, I totally understand the resentment of EA making annual sports games. However, you're wrong if you think they make no changes.

I've been an avid football fan for the last 20 years, and I've played football games since FIFA 98. The last 5 or 6 years I've played them year round, minimum once a week. There are always gameplay changes, presentation changes, changes to graphics engines, physics engines, they always make edits. Not all of them are for the best, I'm not a fan of this years inclusion of about 1000 little cutscenes between gameplay some of which you can't skip. But if they didn't bring one out every year I'd have gotten bored long ago.

I'm not the only one who does this, and it's not just sports games. It happens with Call of Duty and other games too. You play the game year round because it's fun and familiar and you don't have to think about it. But after 11 months (hell, sometimes even fewer) you need another one to play and master.

There's a huge market for sports games because there is a huge fanbase of sports fans. If you aren't a fan of sports games it's a safe assumption you aren't into sports, which is why you can't understand the need.

You're right. At least COD gets a fresh development cycle each time, even if the do re-use most of the same mechanics. The only thing EA do with FIFA and other such franchises is re-record commentator voice overs, new in game event animations (maybe), update team rosters and that's about it.

I would never stop people from buying these games and frankly there're perfectly good games, but the people in the market are not normally in the gaming community like we are and thus are so blissfully unaware of the way they're being ripped off and that makes me sad. EA is getting with murder here and they know it, and there's nothing the gaming community can really do to stop it.

EA Sports could be the ultimate money printer in entertainment. As a result, I actually compelled to congratulate them.

Can't they just make FIFA 2k15 with air strikes and stuff? I always wanted to nuke that stupid field.

The sad fact is that fans of the sport will keep paying for these games year after year.  My nephew got Fifa 14 for his PS4 last year and that is pretty much the only game he played until Fifa 15 came out of course.

What really shocks me though is how much these games continue to sell for, I was doing some shopping maybe about a month ago (After Fifa 15 came out) and I seen a copy of Fifa 14 still being sold for £49.99!  FULL PRICE!!!!  I was stunned!!  There was a used copy of COD AW for less than that!

I just buy FIFA games that are 4-5 years old for next to nothing.  They still play more or less exactly the same maybe look slightly worse but thats it.  They are still about as realistic as a granny taking on the entire Russian army with a knitting needle.

It amazes me when I see stuff like this. Gamers being intolerant of other gamers. The fact is (not the sad fact, because there isn't anything sad about it), gamers who like sports will buy sports games and will play them year round, so they don't mind buying them for £40-50 when they come out because they'll get more use out of that game than any other game they buy for a year.

I buy FIFA every year, because I know that I'm going to play the crap out of it every year. Back when I played the Pro Evolution Soccer games (also annual) when I looked at my "hours played" it was often over 400 hours played by the time the next years game would come out. It's not sad, it's just that when I get home from work and I'm tired I don't have the energy to play games with an intense story, I don't have the brainspace, so I stick on FIFA and play a few games instead. It's the same thing people do with MMOs, no energy to play anything intense so Ima go kill scorpions for an hour and try to level up.

As for the price thing, you were probably in a shitty store, as the standard for pricing is that when the new years game comes out the previous year drops to below £10. That's probably the store trying to con a few people into buying the wrong game.

Since you know your stuff explain me this: What's the difference between PES and FIFA? The only thing I can pin down is the music, but I'm not sure if that's a key factor.

Pes doesnt have the licensing to use premier league teams etc

So it uses fake teams or no premier league teams at all?

Generally the main focus is the licensing. PES has the licence for the Champions League and Europa League, so they can only use the official kits, names and likenesses of teams in the CL or EL. FIFA has almost all the licenses for the leagues, so they can use all the official kits and likenesses for all the teams and players. But, for years there have been sites who specialise in making the kits and leagues which you can edit in game on PES to fix those issues.

Main difference really is that PES is more arcadey and FIFA is more of a simulation. I started on FIFA because it was what was available when I was a kid, moved to PES because it was more fun, and then when I got really into football moved back to FIFA where I could use more teams =D

Okay, I think you may have got wrong impression.  I'm not judging or being intolerant of anyone's choice of game time here.  Even though I don't buy them myself (I'll explain why in more detail later) I understand why other gamers and in particular fans of the sport in question like my nephew would would, and that is actually what pisses me the fuck of the most!

Sports games have a place as they're one of the few types of games that have local multiplayer, so they can be a ton of fun when you've got friends over!  I myself used to play allot of the Tiger Woods games and Fifa back in the day.  If your a fan of the sport and take it more seriously I get it, it simulates and gives the player an experience of what it might be like to professional player and/or manager in the sport they love.

I haven't played a sports game in a while partly because I don't have that mutch interest in them, partly because most of are published by EA who I was boycotting until recently but it's mostly because of one word that is especially applicable to EA Sports, and that is GREED!   They completely cash in and take advantage of the fans affection for the sport, lets go back to what you said about my store example before.

As for the price thing, you were probably in a shitty store, as the standard for pricing is that when the new years game comes out the previous year drops to below £10. That's probably the store trying to con a few people into buying the wrong game.

Are you sure about that?  I just checked the UK PSN store and both Fifa 14 and Fifa 15 were being sold for £54.99!  The cheapest used copy of Fifa 14 I've seen in store was over £40!  Plus these games have online passes and microtransactions, this is clearly not acceptable!  As a gamer I wouldn't swallow this bullshit for any game but their not out rape my wallet, their counting on the ignorance of the sports fans who don't know any better and thats what makes me sick!

Yes they update rosters and make other changes but nothing so significant that it can't be done through discounted DLC.  COD gets allot of flack for this sorta thing (and rightly so) but at least they ad a new campaign, maps and some new mechanics each time around which is more than I can say for Fifa or Madden.

Like I said before I'm taking a stab at people who like these games, quite the opposite in fact.  They deserve better than this!

Quite frankly, the most significant change in FIFA the last few years is the addition micro-transactions. Enough said.

Seriously, how can such a long running games series that existed before on-line play suddenly justify microtransactions on a full priced game

Honestly I agree with the title, at the very least I would appreciate a non yearly schedule. Maybe bi-yearly, it just seems like nothing changes in the genre.

Can't we just get a new, and translated, Captain Tsubasa game? I'm pretty sure that's what all the sports fans want.

Wowow micro transactions!? How can ANYONE defend micro transactions in ANY game that is not free to play?

Wrestling games at least get new game mechanics. I think.

1. There are actually slight changes each year but you wouldnt notice unless you play them

2. They won't stop making them because they make a lot of money

3. If your not a fan of sports games, why do you even care if the annual releases don't have revolutionary changes every year?
