How EA ruined and controls PopCap

12 posts in this topic

Hello, this may be old news but it strikes close to home for me because I absolutely loved PopCap, so I'm going to run you through a timeline of events leading up to PopCaps denial, the creators of such great casual games, here's a few you might recognize.

games_zpss2o2gdqx.png

These are some popular titles that PopCap had to offer. I'm sure if you've played any of these you can attest to the amount of sheer fun and hours of gameplay these contained.

And then EA showed up. In summer of 2011 EA bought out PopCap for 1.3 BILLION dollars. Link to the artical on it here. http://techcrunch.com/2011/07/12/confirmed-ea-buys-popcap-games-for-750-million-plus-earn-out/

EA CEO states “PopCap’s great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA’s momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital

business. EA’s global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels.”

^This right here? It's basically saying "We're willing to pay out the ASS for us to get our hands on the IP's that PopCap has to offer, and oh hoh hoh did they MILK it. Now, I don't know about any of these other games, but Plants Vs. Zombies was squeezed of it's monetary value. I'm talking Sequels, Toys, Shirts, pretty much whatever merchandise you wanted, and when I went to take my baby sister to a Chuck E. Cheese type restaurant (Safari Sam's), what did I see there? I'm laughing as I type this, but no joke, I saw one of these.

photo-3_zpsju9wczaw.jpg Yeah, seriously. Disclaimer, this photo was taken off the internet, not an exact picture of the one I saw, but they are practically identicular. I would tell you my opinions on the actual games they made as sequels, but that would take a really long time, involve a lot of anger, and lose the "professional" side on behalf of AJSA. Short version: They suck. Plants Vs. Zombies IP slapped on = sells like hotcakes.

So how did all of this turn out on PopCaps side? Badly. Very badly. In fact, people were literally being held up like puppets by Corporate Commander, with the goodness of their LIVES threatened. Don't believe me?

For those of you who didn't click on that, EA has shut down branches of PopCap in several areas. Now, for the latter, the CEO of PopCap (John Vechey) claims that EA had nothing to do with jobs in Seattle being lost. "The founders, CEO, and executives who were in charge of PopCap still are. The decision to reorganize was 100 percent made by us, with no pressure from EA," he said on the PopCap Blog. Adding, "if we didn't have EA behind us, the cuts would have been worse."

Would it have been worse, John? Now, of course I'm not going to try to disprove this, because there is no way to, but think about it. Seattle jobs were lost in August of 2012. That's over a YEAR later that PopCap was bought out by EA. Would they be in this exact same position a whole year later if they never sold out? Do you think so? I sure don't, PopCap were kings at making and pumping out a fun casual game and should have spent the last 2 years doing that.

If you're still not on my side, think about this. Seeing all those games up at the top of this ungodly long post (sorry about that), would you have expected PopCap in their right mind to develope a mobile only game with shit-tons of micro transactions? Say hi to the long awaited Plants Vs Zombies sequel, which is actually still being updated today! Got to keep them paying somehow, damn they know how to milk an IP.

They won't. EA's been pulling this shit for ages. This is what EA does:

-Purchase small IP.

-Fire 3/4 of the staff.

-Announce new sequel. Make deadline super tight, so that developers have to work 24h a day to make a passable product.

-Release the shitty product in an uncompleted state.

-Consumers are stupid and will buy no matter how many times you pull this shit. Take the money.

-Middlefinger the consumer as he complains.

-Never touch the series again.

EA are bad, but how many times do people have to learn that to not be bought by someone like EA, you have to be off the stock market. if you aren't PLC, you can't be bought.

investment is still doable, just find private investment. going PLC on the markets allows anyone to buy you out and fire everyone if they wanted to, not just EA, anyone with an interest.

EA also tried to acquire a deal or a merger with take 2 interactive to get their hands on GTA, which is made by rockstar games but they are a subsidiary and owned by take 2. because take 2 is 100% incorporated (Inc) and not on the stock exchange, they gave EA a very polite fuck you and piss off.

more companies need to be INC or LTD, and not PLC.

The only thing I liked that came out of the entire Popcap/EA relationship was garden warfare,

but even that wasn't THAT great.

EA should be split into multiple (2-3?) entities like Activision should as well.

Garden Warfare is a mixed bag. I haven't played it myself, so I can't speak about how it functions as a game, but you can't deny it doesn't have much right to exist, especially after they had already made Plants Vs Zombies 2. From what I see is it's a Cel shaded third person shooter with choose-able classes. Whether or not there's more to that, it still doesn't deserve to be a Plants Vs Zombies game, there is absolutely no precedent I can see. Plants Vs. Zombies... Plants Vs. Zombies 2... 3rd person cel shaded shooter with Plants Vs. Zombies IP. Doesn't mesh well.

But that being said I won't judge you for liking it. I base main aspects of a game on how fun it is, so even if I THINK it's bad, if YOU had fun with it - well why should I scold you for that? Fun is fun! And I'm not denying that the game could be fun! It just SHOULDN'T EXIST. Why couldn't it have just been something new? It's not like you'd need much background or anything, it's a online shooter! (Unless there's a campaign with riveting storyline that somehow matches up with the events of the first two in that case the perspective is different.) Maybe it's because EA would have been releasing it, and they wanted that extra UMPH to pick it up from Steam free-to-play section to a full price release sold in stores. What else but Plants Vs. Zombies? I mean, it's like a un-breakable safety net. What Plants Vs Zombies game is going to fail? The people who are able to see the true nature of the big picture are outweighed by the number of people that need to notice to make a difference.

If there's a lot more worth in the video game than I'm giving it, please let me know. How can you even make a Plants Vs Zombies game a multiplayer only shooter? I mean, there was so much more room for potential. Hell, I would have even been open to the idea of they at least had a campaign with a few strategic variables. This post wasn't meant to be this long.

Where were you when I was looking for a picture to put into that damn blank spot. Insaniquarium! That was the name! Damn! I swear my history is pretty much

"Aquarium"

"Aquarium game"

"Aquarium game PopCap"

"DE FOOKIN FISH GAME!"

I started thinking for a minute that I was thinking of a game by a different company, but I was pretty sure that they made a parody of it in a minigame in PvZ. Anyways, thanks for reminding me the name! I'ma get to playin' that sucka'.
