Pre-order (Blind faith, obsession or poison?)

14 posts in this topic

Good evening One and All i'm about to open my stupid mouth

Gaming has sure evolved, from its humble beginnings upon my square 32 inch TV to the mighty Gameboy to the now Slick and Smooth Playstation (and Xbox wiiu yadda yadda) It feels exciting that Games are this big now. Proud i am knowing when all my friends went out and played cricket in the blistering sun i would stay indoors and help Goku save the earth (however the room had no aircon so thus i was forced outside). With the B.A.F.T.A Awards to the now big premiers of E3 i applaud the recent influx and growth of this once small and humble community However i have started to notice an awful trend come into this community as if the claws of a badger has stuck his paw into the Jam. Pre-orders, Micro Transactions and even Cosmetic Dlc's how odd i thought "while sitting on my couch" when did playing video games suddenly become a night at the Gentleman's club with 10's and 20's been eagerly thrown around just to see what color Knickers she was wearing. I had to investigate and suddenly this community that i thought i knew Blew up and suddenly i was introduced to the equivalent of a jungle party held in some old apartment complex with no windows or doors with the awful smell of canned tuna filling the air. Companies and development teams casually pushing out rushed games that weren't finished yet with the promise it will only get better (Or it is better) i felt i was in a marriage with a middle aged waiter, however it astounded me that game company's now expect you to pay over one hundred dollars on a promise that they never kept it made me feel betrayed. However that is so Melodramatic it's not that bad however it does feel like the gaming industry is getting a little carried away with some of these "Triple AAA" Games pushed out yearly that are not even complete or don't expand on anything it feels like the silk industry. Make what the customer wants but then charge extra if they want that dash of blue on that violet dress? Micro-Transaction and DLC's costing you money for a new red gun......Excuse me? It makes me think did gamer's even come up with that or is this the hand of the corporation coming down to take my wallet? Pre-order to me meant "Buy this edition of Deltora Quest now because only 20 copies are being sold at this shop" Not buy our game because "Battlefield". I feel struck and this poison has dripped onto the community people getting angry and fed up, demanding more, wanting more... waiting for the next best thing to entertain them for a while then get angry at it later. It feels like those days of playing Mario with all of you're friends only to be trampled by the kid who wasn't willing to share.

My question for the community is. How has gaming changed? and has it changed you? Has it changed the community? Pre-order is it a statement or has it become a title?

Wise words. I just posted in another topic that the purpose if pre-order today is so companies can sell games pre-review. When I was younger I pre-ordered because my local game shop always has limited stock of new game s, so it made sence to do so back then. I'm not preodering anymore unless I'm sure as my shit the game will be worth it.

Couldn't agree more with you, this pre-order culture is ruining the industry. Back in 80s-90s, pre-ordering games was ok because most game stores had a limited stock of game CDs/cartridges and digital distribution didn't exist. These days, game stores usually have a large stock game CDs and digital distribution is very common, so there's no reason to pre-order, so companies decided to cut out content from the main game and put it as pre-order bonuses, I'm not saying that all companies do that, I'm just saying that a lot of companies do that.

neither.

when i pre order something i know it's going to be excellent. i do my research. in fact, i won't pre order anything unless i really want it on day 1 AND there is a risk i won't be able to get it if i don't pre order it, i.e. limited stock, goes out of stock due to high demand.

if i want the game still, and know it's going to be great, but don't really care for having it on day 1, then i won't pre order it. pre order only ever happens if i think there's a risk i can't get it day 1. this is how everyone should approach pre orders. you don't NEED to buy the game before release just because the publisher offers you that option.

and if they throw you incentives just to get your pre order... before the game releases, with no reviews out, then chances are it's going to be a bullshit game.

The reason pre-orders are so prevalent now is because of how companies see us now, based on recent trends.  Companies are out to make money and when they find a certain strategy to be successful, they'll do it more.

In my case, I admit to pre-ordering, it happened a handful number of times, alongside a couple of kickstarter donations.  But imo the tragedy is when people pre-order a game thats being made by a developer with a bad reputation.  For example, look at Battlefield, the people who pre-ordered BF3, BF4 and Hardline are the ones directly responsible for developers/publishers pulling off this stuff.  Think about it, if you own a car manufactoring company, and sold a car with a missing side mirror (sold separately) and you see it become very successful when compared to the previous model that sold a complete car, would you revert to your old model? or sell the next model with the side mirror and 4th tyre sold separately?

South Park summarizes pre-orders in a very direct way:

Pre-orders are a symptom of a greater problem.... other symptoms include:

- Early access - Specifically ones that demand money upfront, and then stop updating.  This can also include kickstarters/crowdfunding

- In-game purchases/currencies - such as Unity, resulting in this gaming experience:

- Always on DRM - quite a few examples, simcity and diablo 3 come to mind, especially on release

TL;DR Change your font, it hurts my eyes

On topic: I don't have the monetary luxury of pre-ordering so I'm in no rush trying to get the best value for my money.

I wish we could go pack to the expansions pack instead of dlc. They were mostly worthwhile(from what i remember) to buy than most dlc today.

Well, not all DLC is just stuff that's been removed from the main game and expansion packs aren't dead, we've been getting  a few of them recently and they were pretty good.

Cosmetic DLCs are not an issue. Simply put, it doesn't give the person who purchased an unfair advantage and it is a good way to keep an a team on board for longer. I honestly don't see why people are so against it. So what if I paid three bucks so i can hear Snoop Dogg tell me that we lost Alpha? It's something i still enjoy now.

If you're a fan of a series and you feel like you got your money's worth consistently, there's nothing wrong with pre-orders either. This year I've pre-ordered Borderlands, MKX, and Siege. And I'll be getting this year's CoD. Yeah Yeah, boo on Ubisoft and all, but i haven't had a Tom Clancy game fail me ever.

What is poisioning the game industry is Early Access, broken games, and broken promises. Broken games: BF 4 was, for all intents and purposes, a failure. It is good now, but why the fuck should i wait a year and a half for a game to be playable? Broken promises: Fuck The Crew and anybody who worked on it. The Beta was amazing. It was a more complete experience than the full game.

Well, there's some games that recently had stand-alone expansion packs such as:

Farcry: Blood dragon

Bioshock: Burial at sea

Infamous: First light

And if you were talking non-stand-alone content we did get expansion packs such as:

Civ V: Brave new world

Xcom: Enemy within
