Get both, they're dirt cheap and both are really good.

Honestly? they're really cheap, just get both. I've never played them because I'm allergic to turn-based gameplay, but that's a rant for another day.

Fallout 2 was an improvement on the first. Not sure how well they work off of Steam, unfortunately they were removed from GoG. If you get Fallout 2 there is a mod that adds in content that was cut or unfinished.

Get both. There is a guide on steam that can help you getting through both as well as telling you where to find the unofficial updates that fix most of the problems.

Get Fallout 3.

Nope. Even FNV feels janky as fuck. FO1 and 2 have aged way better.

If you have to get only one go with Fallout 2, it's bigger and has many improvements over the first one. But like everyone else said, just get both. They're both $10 on Steam.

Not sure if you bought either game yet but they are on sale on Humble Bundle's store now.

If you're willing to wait long enough, you don't have to decide on either, and can get all of the currently released ones in a nifty Bomb container: http://www.vg247.com/2015/07/23/fallout-anthology-slated-for-release-this-fall/

There's a Quakecon sale on Steam, which means you can get both of them for dirt cheap.

That was a limited release that sold out almost as soon as it was announced, and is waaay overpriced anyway.
