Only 34% of PC gamers game at 1080p

10 posts in this topic

Only 34% of PC gamers game at 1080p according to Steam's Monthly hardware survey, which is much lower than what many would expect.

1080p is still the resolution of choice however with the largest number of users, which is 34.72% of Steam's userbase.  1366x768 remains as Steam's second most popular resolution, though this is undoubtedly due to the influence of laptops.

Some other noteworthy resolution stats is that 1440x900 is used by 5.04% of Steam's users and 1440p is now used by more than 1% of Steam users, which goes to show how popular this resolution is becoming.

While 1080p is not used by the majority of PC gamers on Steam we need to remember that 1080p is still the most widely used resolution and that the are a significant number of people who use even higher resolutions.

Other noteworthy stats from Steam's hardware survey are that 8GB has now became the most popular amount of system memory, and that users with quad core systems are quickly catching up to the number of systems which use dual core CPUs, with dual cores taking up 48.26% and quad cores taking up 44.27% of Steam's userbase.

I'm actually surprised by this.

I'm surprised to, but I'm not exactly sure how to interpret this or what it really means. There may accounts on steam belong to people who don't take games that seriously and just play a few older ones on laptops or simple home PC's.

Actually, I'm not surprised by this. I always assumed that a good percentage of steam users mostly use it to play some older games on lower-spec machines (I'm actually a part of that percentage).

Keep in mind that not everyone who takes the survey is on there game machine either, as you can browse steam on just about anything a lot of people are likely buying while away from the game rig on their laptop or phone as well.

I was just thinking about this and wondering if it's counting my gaming rig, my school laptop, or both. I assume it filters out the mobile users, since you can only buy games from the app, not access your library.

Like the article says, it's the most popular, but not the majority. The actual majority is the 66% of people using anything but 1080p. But that's all semantics.

Would that mean there's no accurate way to actually do this survey at this point if that's the case? Was it intentional for the survey to also include devices that use the Steam App too? Laptops I can understand, but mobile devices like phones and tablets?

Though I guess even the nVidia Shield streaming might count towards the survey results too.

So what they're really saying is 66% of we PC Gamers are extremely poor... seems legit.
