Why would you even compare the 2? GTA V came out 5 years later and was meant to be improved in every way.

GTA V because I honestly hated everything about GTA IV ecept when I was bored I would crash and fly out the windshield on that game for fun.

I just got GTA V and haven't started it yet, and while I did like 4 at times it did get incredibly annoying. The social interactions, the faux dating, and fake internet didn't really do it for me. It did have great characters but the story ended up falling flat, and I desperately wanted more interior space. We'll see how GTA V stacks up, and I am excited for the online component (when it's actually stable)

Well I like GTA IV's story mode a lot more than GTA V's, or any other GTA game for that matter. GTA IV had a lot darker and grittier story, and in that game GTA lost a lot of it's outlandishness (jet packs and silly cheats like gimp suits and flying cars), and to me was a more emotional, realistic story. But after you get done with the story in GTA IV, there really isn't anything to do. The map is too small, there aren't a lot of vehicles, and multiplayer got boring after your first night playing. In GTA V, however, there's a ton more stuff to do from all the new vehicles to the enormous map to the new multiplayer and on and on. So overall, I think I have more fun in GTA V, and it has more replay-ability, but GTA IV had a strong story that still remains my favorite.

I like GTA 5 better because the cars DO NOT DRIVE LIKE THEY'RE MADE OF BUTTER AND NO ONE ASKS YOU "COUSIN WE NEED QUALITY TIME! LETS GO BBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWLLLLLLLLIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG!!!! EVERY 5 SECONDS!!! Also I like looking at the character's faces in gta 5 because Niko always had a poop face in my opinion. Plus I like all the colors in gta 5 because everything seems dull in 4.

I'm going to share some more of the reasons why I was disappointed with GTA V directly from a rant I had over Skype.

[3:06:52] Aquila: In a slightly related note, I think the reason I was so disappointed with GTA V is because it doesn't take its time like GTA IV does. People wanted to get right to the action and most of the game is just "do this because reasons". Most of the story is told not shown, and the only conflicts that are shown are the ones that you immediately deal with. Michael's family life is fucked up but you only have like, one or two missions that show that and the rest is like "hey remember that time you were a terrible father and a bank robber? Fuck you."

[3:07:22 PM] Aquila: Same with Franklin. "Hey you're a gangster who works repo for a shady car dealership, now go get fired after 2 missions." Even his GIRLFRIEND was offscreen most the time!!

[3:08:14 PM] Aquila: "Good thing Lamar's buddy is out of jail, now you have an excuse to hang out with Michael and Trevor and not establish why Franklin is friends with Lamar and what their past is like other than in passing conversations."

[3:09:57 PM] Aquila: Meanwhile in GTA IV you immediately know that Niko has been told these outrageous lies by his cousin about how rich and important he is and then see Niko's reaction as he and his cousin cope with their lives. GTA V would've been like. "Remember when I came here 2 years ago and you had nothing? Fuck you, I'm going to rob a bank now."

[3:11:26] Aquila: Almost all of the conflicts in GTA IV were either a direct result of actions you played on-screen or events relating to Niko's past that have a steady buildup and payoff.

[3:11:42] Aquila: GTA V lacks that buildup. It's just constant bad situations. I cared when Kate McReary died. If Tanisha died I wouldn't have given any fucks.

I'm not saying GTA IV is the perfect game but its story was handled way better than GTA V's and the characters felt like I actually got to know them than just to talk about them. I felt like I was playing AS Niko Bellic, not just watching his life play out from an outsider's perspective.

GTA V's story is a lot shallower, having been downgraded from 94 missions to 69 (and that's including heist setups, which involve stealing things and that's the whole mission, so even less of those have actual story in them).

In terms of gameplay, GTA V is way superior. Although I kinda wish I could ditch some of my weapons sometimes. It was simpler when you could only keep one of each weapon type instead of just hoarding them all. I also wish they kept in the fast food interiors like Burger Shot and Cluckin' Bell, and the ability to buy from street corner vendors. Soda machines still work at least. I also kind of wish friend abilities still worked to give you an incentive to hang out with Lamar or Jimmy other than "because it was in the last game."

In the strictest of terms, which is the better game? I'd have to say GTA V was. It improved a lot of the car-driving and the foot controls, making the game feel less floaty and more realistic.

But that's not what's being asked. The poll question "which do I prefer", in other words which game did I enjoy better, would go to GTA IV. It has its flaws, but it's way more of a "total package", while GTA V feels like I only got the action of a triple-A game and not the story and character drama I'd expect from the company that brought amazing stories like Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, Max Payne 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and of course GTA IV.

^completely agree with Aquila, here. I prefer IV way more, and was actually pretty disappointed in V. It's still a good game, but in no way did I find it the 10/10 perfect game that all the publications gave it. I actually think IV falls a lot closer to that.

GTAV....you dont have to spend your time refusing to waste time with roman or other dudes/girls...Los Santos is wayyyyy bigger than liberty city and the gameplay itself is far more better than in GTAIV.. its like playing a movie ....for days.  The MP is also far more superior in GTAV in its online version....

I would have to say that story-wise and character-wise, I prefer GTA IV.

Niko is a realistic and gritty character, and despite his borderline psychopathy he still plays straightman to a more insane world. The plot is driven around the hardships of his adjusting to American life using his criminal expertise to help his cousin make a name for himself, while simultaneously searching for closure for a despicable betrayal that has been haunting him for 10 years.

In GTA V, I really find that I don't like any of the main protagonists. Franklin is possibly the most likable character of the three, but I feel he's just "token black man". He's not even that entertaining, Lamar steals Franklin's spotlight more often than not while Franklin is a bit bland and whiny to me. Michael is more relatable than the others I think, because I feel sorry for him when I see how his family views and treats him despite his efforts. That being said, his efforts aren't 100% sincere and more for his own peace of mind than for his family's happiness. He's also a liar and a hypocrite. Trevor may be a psychopath who definitely shouldn't have known the truth about Michael's "death", but at the same time Michael has done a lot of underhanded things like take advantage of Franklin's ambitions and treated his family like crap at times. Trevor is the most charismatic of the three characters because he's just charming. He has a strange amount of depth for someone who's supposed to personify the typical cathartic GTA player, and at times he's even wiser and more earnest than Michael. Though obviously he's so far off the handle that he can't be related to that well, and he is downright scary if you think about it.

GTA IV also had significantly more missions than GTA V. V has about 69 main missions and IV has 94. V makes up for its length by having more awesome side-missions than IV, but I still felt the main story was a bit lacking.

If I added in GTA Online to the mix, GTA V is overall better than GTA IV. But as a singleplayer experience, I think IV is superior.

I agree on all points with you.
