Otaku World Order

It's official. Gearbox owns Duke Nukem now.

A lawsuit between 3D Realms and Gearbox has been settled out of court and Gearbox now officially has full ownership of Duke Nukem.

The legal battle between Gearbox Software, 3D Realms, and Interceptor Entertainment over the Duke Nukem franchise has ended, leaving Gearbox the "full and rightful owner" of the property.

To avoid going to court over the dispute, the studios reached a voluntary undisclosed settlement.

The case began in early 2014 after 3D Realms announced Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, a top-down action role-playing game for PC and PS4. This prompted Gearbox to file suit, asserting the companies were trying to "illegally exploit Gearbox's intellectual property rights" of the franchise.

3D Realms and Interceptor have since rebranded Mass Destruction as a new franchise,Bombshell, which replaces Duke Nukem with a female protagonist named Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison.

Gearbox acquired the property from 3D Realms in 2010 prior to the launch of Duke Nukem Forever, which Gearbox quickly finished and subsequently released in June 2011 to heavy criticism.

Ummm... yaayy...? I guess?

While DN: Forever was complete shit, I think it's safe to say it was mostly from the game being in development hell for so long. With Gearbox in complete control I think there is hope for a true revival of our favorite blonde crew-cut wearing, one-liner spewing, ass-kicking hero!

I agree. With all the other cooks out the kitchen and this lawsuit not hanging over their heads there is hope that the next Duke Nukem game will be good.

That's good! As long as they don't make the same mistake ever again. AHEM, Colonial Marines.

All they need is to use the clever comedy that's in Borderlands, and make a solid game. Don't know if they should lessen the sexual themes and immature stupidass jokes since it won't be Duke Nukem without them, but if the Shadow Warrior remake and Wolfenstein New Order can be much more awesome than the past games by going in a different direction, I say why not Duke Nukem too.

Honestly, I don't trust Gearbox with anything other than Borderlands.

^This. And That's only because the Pre-sequel was one of my favorite games in years. If not for that they'd be on my shit list.

I think with a stand alone focused development cycle that they could do Duke Nukem justice. With Forever they were handed a bunch of leftovers that they had to assemble and reheat as best they could and with Aliens Colonial Maries they had to many Chefs in the Kitchen.

Gearbox isn't a company I really trust with the IP. Now if it was a developer like Bethesda, maybe.

I'll pass, I still don't fully trust Gearbox after the Colonial Marines disaster and their mishaps with DNF.

Is there any company left that we can trust that isn't Bethesda?
