Games That F*cked You!

26 posts in this topic

So I recently watched this Video from GameTrailers (before anyone starts, no I'm not a regular viewer) where a number of their staff members talk about their experiences of games that fucked them.  Now what is meant by that is a not game that disappointed or was necessarily lacking in quality in any way but a certain event that happened like a bug, a difficulty spike or being the victim of a troll that led to them being either unable or unwilling to continue playing.

I figured this would be an interesting topic for discussion so share your stories about the games that fucked you!

I'll start with one my own personal experience:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Getaway Fucked me!

The_Getaway_PS2.jpg

The early 2000's there was something of a transition period in gaming with many games still orientated towards kids but there was a growing number of games aimed specifically at adults.  I don't mean games like Mortal Kombat that had merely had lots of blood and stuff I mean games that have adult orientated themes and plots and this was one of them.

It's a third person shooter with a cover mechanic.  It had a realistic look with a gritty story about the London underground and It was a real challenge to.  Your character could only survive maybe 4 or 5 hits in each stage, limping and staggering as you took more damage and this was pretty much your only indication of how much health you had (no health bar).

Hard as it was I did get through to what I think is one of the last stages where you follow one of the main character bosses through a boat while he is holding your son hostage.  I get through the first wave of grunts on the deck of the boat and headed inside where this guy kills me with a single shot.  I figured I must have took to many hits on the deck so I try again and again.  Through practice I was able to find the right cover potions and get the enemy patters down so I could consistently get across the deck without getting hit once but as soon as I approached this one guy boom!  Either instant death or so close to death it might as well have been.  I tried everything from slowly creeping up to running out and diving across but the result was always the same.

To this day I never got past it and I don't know what happens next in the story, yep I got fucked.

Never had anything happen so bad I couldn't finish a game, but i have run into many a bug that almost did. Specifically Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness. I have yet to try and play the game again because I remember how bad it was the first time through.

I also never actually finished Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall because there were so many bugs to deal with...or was that because you actually have to wait for certain story events to happen and in that waiting time I just did a crapload of Fighter's and Mage's Guild quests and totally forgot what I was supposed to be doing in the main story? Typical Bethesda.

A friend and I both rented Two Worlds a few years back because it was a rpg and had coop play. It was absolute shit and it broke my heart.

A lot of the older Bioware games have god-awful autosaves. The first Mass Effect, Dragon Age Origins, Jade Empire- I have a tendency to get caught up in the story, forget to manual save, and then BAM! I get cocky and die- then get sent back at least an hour to two hours or more of progress. You play any of those games and forget to save for a while, you know that pain.

It's never "Fucked" me, per say, but Jade Empire especially has had me physically screaming at my computer screen in frustration of late. Not many other games have done that, the only other one that comes to mind is RAGE, and that's only because there's a literally unbeatable boss. There's a game that's fucked me. If you recall the first big boss of the game, the giant abomination in the ruined city that you have to fight with a rocket launcher? Literally impossible as far as I can tell. Given that the rocket launcher is the only thing that can damage him, yet it takes time to lock on and doesn't really track targets very well, what ends up happening is that the launcher has to lock on during the time between his rock-throwing shitfits, and then by the time it locks on he's grabbing another rock and the rocket can't track well enough to hit him in the necessary spot to hurt him and therefore bring him close enough to shoot a rocket at his exposed brain and then take a sliver off his health, because he doesn't take damage from anything else. I couldn't hit him, I had infinite ammunition, and he couldn't hit me. One of the most infuriating things I've ever played.

In Divinity The Dragon Knight Saga, there is a horrible autosave system that only saves at story objectives (which are few and far between). At one point the game decided to glitch and have a subtitled line of Talana (the narrator) permanently displayed. I could not figure out how to get rid of it and I did not have a manual save before that line of dialogue came up and I got so fed up with it I was forced to load an autosave which set me back quite a while.

I love the game but I got a game breaking bug in lufia and the fortress of doom. At one point in the game you have to collect 7 pieces of some material in order to turn your ship into a sub. Some came from story events, others from dungeon chests.

Somehow I managed to not get one from one of the sources and was unable to continue since all the chests were now empty and you needed a sub to continue.

Eventually I played again and never had the problem again.

Far Cry

That part when you fought many mutant with rocket launcher is bullshit, especially on last stage. Because they have laser accurate aim, bullet spongy health, oh and also they can see you through wall when you try snipe them from distances. I mostly dies because they spamming rocket at me and I have little time to react. That time I just say fuck this is so cheap and I turned on cheats like God Mode and Infinite Ammo and finish the damn game.

Axiom Verge. Damn you to Hell, Ukhu!

Oh, and Legend of Grimrock 2. Wasn't a fan of the open-world progression. Half of the time I just wandered around aimlessly.

My biggest disappointment by far was Brink. I was super excited, they promised a game that was going to be like Borderlands and like so many others. I fell for the hype. I returned that game 3 days after I bought it. I have not bought a game day one ever since Brink bent me over and f*cked me in the a*s. Without lube mind you. It was a great concept that was poorly executed.

Oh man, I forgot about that one! Yeah, completely unwinnable even on easy. I think I only did it once by swimming out to sea and accidentally tripping an autosave point that reloaded me at a point past all those stupid mutant without aggro.

GTA San Andreas. The mission where you have to chase down Tenpenny's partner across like the entire map without being able to damage his car and then eventually you get to kill him. Can't remember the characters name. But when i did it the first time, he glitched and was invulnerable, He left his car to flee after I wrecked it and he wouldn't die. I shot him to hell and back from my car, and ran him over repeatedly but he just kept getting up. So eventually i parked on top of him, covered my car in remote charges, and detonated them, still didn't kill him. I then got another vehicle, and rammed the burnt out remains of my car off of him and was going to go after him with a melee weapon and he got up and one shot me with a shotgun

Replayed it immediately and he died no problem But that pissed me off

Warhammer Online f***ed me in slightly offtopic way, after it was shut down two years ago I was left without home :)

I can't find anything similar.  ESO was closest, still far enough with it's heavy ES "burden" (and yes, I played GW2 for about a week).

Does it count if instead of difficulty it's a corrupted save somewhere far into the game? Because that's what happened to me with Assassin's Creed Liberation on the Vita. I already killed the boss in the swamp. and that fight was kinda wonky as the counter-attack on him doesn't always work (or was it some QTE, can't remember).

Anyway, I tried multiple times and the save always eventually got corrupted to the point that even when the patch came out, I didn't care anymore.

A certain event take took place in a game that led me to discontinue my forward progress for good? There's only one game that has given me such an experience...

I had this experience with Aquanox 2 not once, but many times. I love the original game to death, the whole underwater, dystopian, sci-fi submarine combat thing really got me, and while the sequel looks cool, it has some missions that are just painfully and unfairly hard.

Its been a while now, but I recall that there were various missions that I would get to, fail miserably at, and just stop playing for a while and finally return to. I think the furthest I got to was the boss fight with a UFO looking enemy partway through the game. After slogging through various stealth, escort and defend missions, each with ridiculous insta-fail conditions,  I drove my now slightly upgraded submarine into the cave, got a face-full of blue energy nonsense and just finally went "nope."

That game had an awesome story and great atmosphere though.

Hmm...If I have to choose one, it would be Lords of the Fallen. I had a solid grip in the game until I discovered a game breaking bug. Right after I killed Beast, I was suppose to go back into the demon realm for something and BOOM!!! The game crashed and my save file got corrupted the moment I took roughly 50 steps. I never got the chance to finish it, nor do I care due to that stupid bug.

I got to say that Hand of Fate really fucked me over

The game was good up until the last boss fight where you have to fight the 12 past bosses in pairs of 3 (so that's 3 boss battles, containing 3 bosses in each of them)

I don't know how many times i have tried to complete the game, but the last boss fight is damn near impossible.

The Blood Bowl video game.

Never in my life have I had a game fall completely apart and get steamrolled so easily.

The AI is stupid so to make up for it, they cheat. Fun times

Two games:

- Metro 2033. This game was so frigging hard for me to play even on the easiest difficulty setting that I just had to give up. It's a shame, because it looks awesome, just like its sequel, especially since the enhanced editions are out, but I'm afraid I'll just not be able to finish them. I don't know why that game was so hard for me, it just was.

- The Banner Saga. This game I enjoyed immensely. Until I reached the final boss. The amount of sneaky code the developers put in there to make the battle unfair was just so infuriating to me, that I refused to finish it. I tried the battle I think about 5 times, before giving up. Such a shame, it's an awesome game otherwise.

Spore.

I keep coming back to this game to screw around in its final form it's fine on its own for like 10-20 bucks if your expectations are low but I think we all know how disappointing it was. Yes I know this has nothing to do with difficulty, but we were all

Fucked.
