Microsoft wants to enable XBL to cross play with PSN and Windows.

Make this happen please!

The Gamespot news article

And the announcement on XBox.com

If I'm understanding this correct, the ball is in the court of Sony and third party publishers. I would kill to make this happen and whilst I don't see this happening overnight it's just great to see Microsoft putting this forward as a serious possibility.

It has been strange to see Sony doing cross platform play with the PC while MS has been avoiding it, hopefully this will lead to the feature becoming more common.

This would be ACE!  I don't think it would apply to all games (and there are some where it shouldn't) but this would be brilliant!  Especially for the AJSA PC and console communities being able to play together.

For first party titles, probably not, but Microsoft has announced that they wouldn't be buying third party exclusives anymore, so that is a win in my book

This is a big step in the right direction, it helps the consumer and could help breathe new life into games that only have small amounts of people playing on each platform.

While I could see this work for SOME games, I don't see it working for stuff like shooters(and for obvious reasons).

It sounds like a good enough idea. But, I hope that somehow we don't end up paying a monthly fee on PC as console players do. Also I hope for the love of god that this isn't a way for Microsoft to push up the windows store as the only platform to support this type of thing. Because if it is, they can go screw themselves.

This. I see it as just another way for Microsoft to push gamers and the rest of the gaming industry around while seeming like they genuinely want to improve things. They could give a shit about people being able to play with friends easily, or else they wouldn't have removed local co-op from Guardians.

wasn't there something similar in the mid/end 2000s with the game Shadowrun (Shooter), that allowed crossgaming between PC and XBOX360 but failed hard?

I'd hope that MS learned its lesson with GFWL, but I'm afraid you might be right. There's a huge difference between putting out a press release that says "We allow cross platform now, yay" and actually providing a viable service that devs can utilize.

This article is what made me consider Microsoft doing this

http://www.pcgamer.com/if-microsofts-uwp-is-as-bad-as-tim-sweeney-says-its-already-doomed/

UWP is limiting the PC pretty badly, and it coupled with the already pretty bad windows store seems pretty shady already.

MS definitely didn't learn from GFWL (other than how to better screw over customers) and I refuse to touch anything in Windows Store.

Eh, good on them. It remains to be seen how much support their actually giving this though.

This would be a nice thing, as long as no stupid bulky software isn't required on the PC's end. This means more meat to put through my grinder in PvP type games.
