If i didn't like 3 and New Vegas, is Fallout 4 worth it?

16 posts in this topic

Hello, i know it's a weird question but i didn't really like the depressing atmosphere of 3 and New Vegas looks too old for me, after seeing some videos and AJ's review apparently F4's atmosphere is much more alive and bright and it's also getting official mod support on steam, should i get it or just stick with Skyrim?

Thank you for the response comrades!

Appearance wise, yes it is much more colorful than 3 or NV. But it is still a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Its kind of supposed to be depressing.

Indeed this does point out that it is supposed to be a wasteland, though I believe in Fallout Canon the commonwealth got hit with 1 nuke whereas the DC area was hit by innumerable nukes so it makes sense that it would be less devastated. And NV was in a desert, so it would be better than that at least. Not sure what system you are getting it for but Steam has a return policy now so I think it might be worth it.

Actually the commonwealth got hit by 2 nukes, not 1, one of them in the industrial area of the Commonwealth (now known as the glowing sea) and one in Cambridge. And before you ask, the reason that the Glowing sea is a radioactive hellhole and Cambrige isn't is that there was a nuclear power plant in the industrial area.

New Vegas looks old to you? As in graphics or just the setting? I mean Fallout 3 and NV both look like shit in graphics and everything, but NV is a bit more colorful than Fallout 3. Fallout 4 is the most colorful one yeah. If you are going to be modding, you can always mod F3 and New Vegas to look brighter and stuff, since you said you are getting it for Steam so I assume you play on PC?

Anyway, if you don't care about previous installments or grapics is in your way and you don't care much to learn about the lore then just go for Fallout 4 then. Basically these games are like Elder Scrolls, but in a post apocalypticc setting. If you like such settings then go for it.

Game play wise, yes. But I'm warning you now, the 'story' is an absolute joke and the dialogue system is fucking awful.

What Fallout 3 and New Vegas have that Fallout 4 doesn't: Skills, Meaningful Conversations, A Compelling Story, Endearing Characters, Oh and the Fucking Narrator (Yes Ron Perlman appears as a newsman in 4 but he's no longer the narrator, which is a role he's held since the first game!)

So in short...

Honestly the story in Fallout 3 and NV were crap too, but in NV I liked it a lot more, but the lore in all Fallout games is still there and the same.

Only thing I found annoying in Fallout 4 is the washed out dialogue which basically comes to this: Yes, No and Sarcastic. Everything else was pretty good, some things could of been better and some things were improved upon. I honestly like the levelling system in Fallout 4. With a few mods tweaks, it's as good as it will ever be.

Nah man. It comes down to "Yes, Sarcastic Yes, Question and No (Yes)"

I didn't like 3 and NV gameplaywise and to be honest the same goes for 4.

Not to mention the changes made to the dialog system and poor story.

If it's just the atmopshere it is similar so I don't think you'll like the new Fallout.

For me Fallout 4 was a dissapointment in general. I never really liked Fallout 3 and NV, but the 4th installment was a joke. Basically, I have a big problem with Bethesda's engine. When you build a shooter game with "Skyrim" engine, problems start coming up real quick. There is no covering system and you rely on VATS more than ever, which takes away the immersion imo. Story wise... meeeeeeh even metal gear solid has a better story and narrative than this one :P . Oh and the dialogue system is fucked up. 4 answers, 2 of which is Yes/No :(

I personally thought shooting was really good in Fallout 4, they added a lot more and was a lot better than in NV and 3. These are still RPG focused games rather than shooting. Also mods :P

But yeah, you either like or don't like the games.

i think with "too old" he means the setting. Since Fallout 1 - 4 looks like it stood still in the early, alternative 50s - 60s. A futuristic Fallout in the year 21XX - 3XXX would be interesting, with futuristic Guns, Gadgets, Enemies, Big bombed down cities or even Worlds, Cyborgs, Implants as Upgrades on Chars (something like Deus Ex), other Planets, building and Upgrading Spaceships etc...

The series is called "Fallout" for a reason.

Yea pretty much and I doubt the world could advance so fast in the state that it is. It would take them who knows how many hunderds or maybe even 1000s of years to be able to have spaceships or any kind of such advanced technology after everything that's happened. Every corporation and anything that ever existed, completely destroyed. Others like the Institute still exist to apparently make the world better in their own vision, but they still just want control over everything. Mankind keeps on doing the same mistake and in words of Maxon,

"Look around you! Look at the scorched earth and the bones that litter the wasteland. Millions... perhaps even billions, died because science outpaced man's restraint! They called it a "new frontier" and "pushing the envelope," completely disregarding the repercussions. Can't you see the same thing is happening again?"

Even tho in all honesty I think that Fallout 4 dialogue was blank and soulless in many parts, this one was one of the best conversations in the entire Fallout series for me.

Enclave in Fallout 2 tried to "wipe out" entire humanity again in order to create pure humans, because they believed everyone in the Wasteland is not 100% pure humans, so it's why they killed almost anyone in their sight. Institute wanted to create a better world by replacing real people with Synths, but let's be honest, there was much more to it than that. Every single faction with intense power in the Fallout universe had some twisted plans which in the end again, put the World either even more behind or wanted to completely destroy it again. Everyone that had some kind of power and technology, again, didn't know how to properly and fairly use it to help the World, but it was always them taking over everything and ruling. Brotherhood of Steel tries to keep technology away from everyone for that reason, but even they could one day fuck up.

A Fallout universe wouldn't be Fallout if it had spaceships and could go on other planets honestly. That would mean they could colonize and move on. TBH, it's why I loved Fallout 1 and 2 the most. Fallout 3 and 4 were kind of in city areas and I didn't like it that much. I prefer the real Wasteland, the desert itself, scattered with abandonded military bases and small little towns a lot more than exploring Washington and Boston and 90% of the buildings there just being bunch of gyms, comic book stores, malls and stuff like that. If Fallout 5 ever comes, I hope it will be like Fallout 1 and 2, where you actually had a HUGE wasteland and several cities/towns, kind of like Elder Scrolls has several cities in their games. Fallout 3, 4 and NV all just had one major city and not to mention New Vegas was small as hell.

And yet, it came from the same game that just casually forgot that the Institute was replacing people with synths towards the end of the main story. And not a single NPC or terminal explains why.
