Actors union asking California safety regulators to investigate mistreatment of voice actors

In a letter from SAG's national executive director David White to the California division of the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, White claims that as video game narrative continues to expand, voice actors are being asked to create sounds that "go way beyond a safe pitch zone." White adds that actors are reportedly being asked to work for up to four hours at a time creating, "noises, death screams, creature voices, combat yelling and other sounds, with so much force and explosive vibration, that they are causing internal damage to their vocal cords."

Capcom: Player banned from Pro Tour for sexual harassment incident at tournament

Capcom says it has banned Noel Brown, a prominent Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom player, from competing in Capcom Pro Tour events for the remainder of the 2016 season. Brown's ban, Capcom says, comes after a sexual harassment incident that was caught on camera at last weekend's Combo Breaker tournament in St. Charles, Illinois.

Brown is notorious in the fighting game community for his behavior at competitions. He was arrested for assault in 2013 at a tournament in Orlando, Florida, and was apparently caught on camera assaulting another player in 2011.

They chose a odd way to frame the story from 2013 as it keeps saying he allegedly hit his ex-girlfriend, while ignoring that it says he attacked another tournament player and hit him several times.

I don’t think I could come up with a more perfect description of how my time working on Fable felt than those words penned by Dickens nearly 160 years ago. The recent closure of Lionhead Studios made this an ideal time to share some of those stories.

 

It’s OK to Be Mad at Games Journalism, But Don’t Be a Moron About It

But a late-night session when the family's asleep at least affords you privacy: you can fuck up and nobody will ever know, or care, but you. (And oh boy, did I ever die a lot in DOOM just by falling off things.) Being put into a situation where you have to play a game publicly, or convincingly talk about one to an audience of people eager to judge you, when it's not a title from your own areas of expertise within the medium, is powerfully pressured. Nobody would invite Ed Sheeran onto live TV to talk about the legacy of Miles Davis, because it'd likely get as far as "Kind of Blue is tight, I guess" (apologies if I'm wide of the mark here, Ed); but in gaming, there's this bizarre assumption that everyone involved in the media, the medium, knows everything about every release, ever.

I had to look at the Forbes article, the one this article links to, around the time it was first posted. I had to look at it because every article written in that style is always going to lie, misinterpret, ignore the human element of live coverage, etc and I always want to see how long it would take the author to do one of those things. He couldn't even make it through the first sentence without lying or saying something that would obviously be shown as wrong if he had looked into it, not that the kind of people creating conent like that care about factual reporting, pandering to outrage culture is easier, which is an odd way of thinking for people complaining about the competence of the press.

 

The Cult of Video Games (Commentary)

A friend of mine in the industry remarked to me a few weeks ago that video game marketing isn’t selling you a game, but rather a membership in a cult. That video game marketing is, essentially, weaponizing fandom.

In other parts of pop culture, it’s simply incidental that kind of intense brand loyalty would spring up amongst a small group of fans. Disney, for example, isn’t trying to foment an intense and rabid fanbase for Marvel movies because Disney knows that kind of fanbase doesn’t need help to grow, and those fans are already in the bag. Disney has to concern itself with everyone else — aka normal people. “Captain America: Civil War” doesn’t rack up $1.1 billion at the box office on the backs of geeks. That money comes from having a mass audience full of people who don’t even remember what happened in the last Marvel movie. Heated nerds are a fringe element there

But in games, that fringe is the entire target audience. The industry caters to their whims at all costs, attempting to foster that possessiveness so as to keep gamers under lock and key. You’ll be able to see this clearly in a couple weeks, when the big video game publishers hold their year’s multi-million-dollar press conference extravaganzas ahead of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (or E3).

It features many of the character archetypes from the earlier games, like Black Mages and White Mages; it returns to a European-inspired fantasy/steampunk world (there are dwarves) after VII and VIII’s more modern, sci-fi/steampunk aesthetics (people go to space); it references earlier games in the series with remixed songs,repurposed items, and re-imagined characters. But while FFIX may stand out to others for its nostalgic winks at earlier games in the series, for me, it will always stand out for its rumination on and representation of terminal illness.

Frankly I was mislead into thinking all my steam games would work on gog too provided gog HAD games on their library, and that by connecting within the 3 day period, I would get X number of games (3 for me) for free amongst that limited selection. nope.

Lol, cute, and no I mean cute, I'm not being sarcastic. It's strange. I got FF12 after refusing to purchase a FF game since 7 (not cuz I loved 7, I did NOT love it, then borrowed 8, and HATED it, and then I was like FF is dead to me!... so like, I didn't try again until effing 12). FF12 is weird, but I actually kinda thought it was good too. The MMO-esque combat... Y'know.. I really hate the old point-click watch people auto-attack as you occasionally push cooldowns combat in mmos... HATE... But oddly enough it didn't bother me that much in 12. Maybe because it's a single player game and you have a party so that boring ass typical mmo combat was multiplied by 4 or whatever (or was it 3 people parties? I thought 4, I forgot though)... Or maybe because it felt like an mmo in terms of grinding materials, exploring optional areas etc.

I guess that's it... I mean it felt like an mmo that was designed to be solo'd... without a cash shop or auction house fucking up the economy, without other people camping goodies.. making cool finds YOURS to enjoy whenever you want...And the world was actually kinda cool too. I enjoyed exploring areas in that game just for the sake of seeing them more than any other FF game. I really didn't like the cast that much, but at least the main story wasn't the effing 'I forgot who I am' thing that Square was bloody obsessed with for awhile. So even if I didn't like the cast much, they didn't make me facepalm in that regard thank god.

I wouldn't say FF12 was my fave FF game, but...it's kinda easy for me to see why someone might think so, and I think it has a lot going for it. I don't know if I'll get the remaster though because frankly, I didn't play the original as much as I should have (I never got bored, just kinda dropped it and forgot about it)

Care to explain where the lie is? Person COULD play the new doom properly? I disagree. I mean you don't have to be good, or even decent in an FPS game if you like other games or something, but damn man.. if you have a gun in a knife fight.. you don't charge into knife range, and then shoot after being stabbed. That guy DID... over and over and over... you have a gun... they shoot... like.. far... so stay way from melee dudes trying to kill you while you like... shoot them. Doesn't take an FPS vet to figure that out. I just.. I... what?

Are the similar issues a lie? I wouldn't say so but that's open to interpritation. Point is many people, regardless of if their opinions are valid or not, were criticizing some critic regarding comments regarding overwatch, this is similar in that people are criticizing the critic.

The part I thought was kinda quirky, and I say quirky and not total bs because it's written in a way you can interprit it in a way that it's not incorrect. But Originally at first glance, the dude said that 'players are still enjoying games like overwatch, it's just the press letting them down'... Gave me the initial impression that gamers are still enjoying overwatch despite a different opinion from the press. But one quick look at metacritic will show you that the press favors the game much more than gamers. Though I expect a great deal of that divide to be caused by people who are like "minor grip = ZERO" or whatever..

They change the games that are offered based on their current deals with publishers. Right now they have three games, when the servers started they had about 12+ I think. I don't know why you would feel mislead, even in the small quote I took from the article it says qualifying games, their ability to have games added is going to be based o nthe publishers. I think I've had about 10 games added to my GOG library from it, it just gives me a DRM free version of the game, if older games start doing it the GOG version might also work better if you tried to play the Steam version.

It wasn't the reviewer playing the game, Arthur Gies didn't capture the footage for it. If this guy is going to complain about other journalists saying the wrong things in live video shows or in text looks at games that they have little information about, frequently about subjects they probably don't even care about but have to try to learn about for their job, then at the very least when he writes an opinion piece of his choice, on a subject he does or is pretending to care about, while referencing events that happened weeks ago he should be able to make his first sentence factual.
