Formed 20 years ago by a pair of friends who loved games and were big fans of The X-Files, Alienware remains a powerful player in the world of PC gaming. Ten years ago, the company was purchased by Dell, but general manager Frank Azor says all that did was allow the company to reach a broader audience and empower its innovation and ability to take chances.

Watch Dogs 2 Game Director Confirms Non-Lethal Playthroughs

Quote

When asked if Watch Dogs 2 supports fully non-lethal playthroughs, Belanger responded: "Absolutely. One of our goals is to support non-lethal. We’re trying to do more than that, but right now what I can say is, definitely non-lethal is possible. And it’s actually one of the values we want to push in this game."

That's a nice change as in a game like this it could lead to much better designed missions with a lot of options in how to go about completing.

MAFIA 3: TACKLING A HUGELY TURBULENT TIME

Quote

“There are a lot of changes,” says Bill Harms, lead writer on Mafia III. “If you go from what the world was in the ’50s to 1968, like, just that era of social upheaval, legal upheaval, the civil rights act, things like that. This is the very first inklings of [other] criminal elements [that] were going to change [the landscape]. In the ’40s, it was World War II, and then later on it was the Korean War, [then the] Vietnam [War]. 1968 is when all of those guys started coming home [from Vietnam] and going, ‘You know what? Maybe everything you’re seeing on the news isn’t jiving with what we saw,’ and that’s when you really started seeing protests and things like that.

MAFIA 3 AND THE RISE OF A BLACK ANTI-HERO

Quote

Creating fun spaces in which to play, and missions that challenge players are all part of creating open worlds. Mafia 3 is also innovating is in its willingness to place an African-American character at the center of the action, and have that character deal with issues like prejudice and opportunity.

Blackman is white, as is the game's lead writer Bill Harms. But he says the team they've hired is diverse.

"We hired writers of different ethnicities and different backgrounds," says Blackman. "We don’t have anybody on the team who lived in the South in 1968, but they have relatives who did, who gave us more insight into that. We tried to be sensitive and make sure we were doing our research.

"We talked about it on the set when we were shooting with the cast, obviously many of whom are African-American. We’d talk through things with the cast and see what their thoughts were. We talked with people on the team who have African-American relatives who grew up in the 1960s, to see if that felt authentic."

The problem with Madden NFL's commentary over the years has always been one of volume, and not in a "can you hear me" way. It's volume, as in the amount and variety of things the announcers say and are served up by the game. Even today, many of Madden's on-field actions are covered by tentative, generic descriptions, and in career modes that extend several seasons into the future, the broadcasters will still be talking about real-life events from the year the game launched.

E3 2016: NEW GOD OF WAR ANNOUNCED

GOD OF WAR IS THE NEW DADDY IN TOWN

Quote

The reason for this rise in videogame daddies, it is speculated, is due to the directors and writers of these games becoming parents for the first time themselves. That’s certainly the case with Neil Druckmann, the director of The Last of Us, who said his own fatherhood shaped his thinking on the game, going so far as to describe it as being “about the love of a father and a daughter.” Unsurprisingly, Cory Barlog, the writer of this Norse myth reboot of God of War says that the new Kratos is influenced by the birth of his son, which he describes as “a tremendously transformative event that had [him] thinking about all kinds of change in life.”

Hands On With The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Wii U and NX Will Be the Same

Quote

We've gotten a lot of news about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild today, and we've even been able to go hands-on with it. But one thing that Nintendo has not referenced much is the Nintendo NX version of the game, which it announced back in April. However, in a round table conversation with GameSpot, series producer Eiji Aonuma talked about the differences between the versions.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild Doesn't Require the Wii U's GamePad

Quote

During a roundtable attended by GameSpot, producer Eiji Aonuma confirmed that Breath of the Wild can be played with the more traditional Wii U Pro Controller.

This perhaps shouldn't come as a surprise considering Breath of the Wild is also coming to NX, which may not have a Wii U-style tablet controller. If that is the case, it would make it a challenge to integrate essential functionality into the GamePad controls on Wii U.

Zelda Producer Explains Why, Despite Speculation, The New Link Is A Guy

Quote

“You know there’s the idea of the Triforce in the Zelda games we make,” he told Kotaku. “The Triforce is made up of Princess Zelda, Ganon and Link. Princess Zelda is obviously female. If we made Link a female we thought that would mess with the balance of the Triforce. That’s why we decided not to do it.”

Asked about this topic by a reporter from GameSpot, Aounma said that Nintendo had considered the idea of Princess Zelda taking the lead role in a Zelda game to satisfy fan desire for a female lead character but “...if we have princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do? Taking into account that, and also the idea of the balance of the Triforce, we thought it best to come back to this [original] makeup.”

Always weird when people think it's a better idea to make themselves look incompetent or insult theirs fan's intelligence instead of just saying, "We didn't want to do thing," or saying nothing.

THE LAYERED, AR-EMBODIED STORY OF TACOMA

Quote

In the newest trailer and gameplay footage for Tacoma, revealed yesterday during YouTube’s Live at E3 stream, humanity is still the focal point in the game’s narrative, just as it was in Gone Home. In Tacoma, the player, an astronaut named Amy, ventures onto an abandoned space station. While she encounters other entities, unlike the eerie quiet of Gone Home‘s mansion, they aren’t human. They’re tech-ghosts, sorta—remnants of a once lived-in past. Our protagonist must interact and watch over these ghostly beings as they interact with one another, to discover just what happened on this space station long ago.

Battlefield 1 maps and modes revealed

Quote

As to modes, two staples are confirmed: Conquest and Domination. 'Operations' is new, however, and could define DICE's take on the First World War. It sounds similar to Verdun's trench warfare and shifting fronts. Instead of capturing points, the attacking team needs to push the frontline forward until they conquer the map, whereupon the defenders have a chance to reinforce on a new map. Each game of Operations is a series of interconnected battles.

Beat Cop Is A Cop Game About Difficult Decisions

cspzxfjthw3071dy0qqo_zpskscdnssv.jpg

Quote

Beat Cop has many lighter moments. It’s not nearly as dark as This War of Mine, the civilian wartime survival game from 11Bit, the company helping produce Beat Cop. The discomfort it sometimes presents is nevertheless alluring and clearly not accidental. Miąsik said the concept came from his development partner, lead artist Adam Kozlowski. Kozlowski was inspired by Papers, Please, the tense game about the difficult decisions made while working at a European border crossing. The idea was to do something like that but with a character who “can actually leave his post and explore the area, which gives many new possibilities in terms of storytelling, yet is still happening in limited surrounding,” Miąsik said. “He drew a picture, with a cop standing on the pavement and life happening around him. After seeing it, I immediately got an idea for the game and that’s how Beat Cop was born.”

OPINION: E3 demos prove we need better writers

Quote

While the visuals and gameplay of Scalebound, Final Fantasy XV, Gears of War 4 and Watch Dogs 2 impressed across the board, the dialogue left much to be desired. It couldn’t even be passed off as the cheesy faux-natural ‘player chat’ during multiplayer matches – these were in-game characters spouting off one-liners that often sounded more at home in a Saturday morning cartoon.

In this article he mentions Rhianna Pratchett who then talked about why we get the kind of lines we do in video games. I might have shared an article about this months ago where a writer talked about trying to give Batman believable lines to signify when he did certain actions in the Arkham games.

LISTEN, BATTLEFIELD 1 OWES NOTHING TO HISTORY

3058958-battlefield1_reveal_02_zpsx1ufyv

Quote

So why the consternation, the hand-wringing? Since the recent announcement of Battlefield 1 there has been a rumbling murmur of worry, suggesting that the setting is distasteful, disrespectful, or historically inaccurate. Even the boss of EA game studios, Patrick Soderlund has said that “When the team presented the idea to me of World War 1, I absolutely rejected it.” Though Sonderland was eventually convinced by the team at DICE, his mention of this seems intended to give him some critical distance, so he might remain safe if critical opinion turns sour. Of course, there is a hypocrisy on display here, not just from Soderlund, but in the general accusations of disrespect or disgust. After all, DICE has been depicting war as “fun” for over a decade now, running through both historical settings in Battlefield: 1942 (2002) and Battlefield: Vietnam (2004), as well as the contemporary fictional wars of Battlefield 2 (2005), Battlefield 3 (2011), and Battlefield 4 (2014).

Watch_Dogs 2 is more Interesting because of a Black Protagonist

a1_zpsfuzshpn1.png

Quote

Watch_Dogs 2 takes place in San Francisco, with Marcus coming from its neighboring city of Oakland; and race plays an important role here. Oakland has been heavily effected by gentrification from neighboring San Francisco, largely caused by the tech boom, and largely resulting in poorer, darker residents of Oakland being pushed out of their homes. In other words, the San Francisco/Oakland area represents a direct relationship between the growth of technology and the systematic oppression of poor black people. Marcus’ opposition to ctOS in San Francisco is way more than just the anti-surveillance message from the first game; it’s a representation of the class and racial tensions present in our world today.

While the setting and character might be interesting, on the other hand we have

Hopefully that can make a game with a good mixture of serious and just stupid and fun moments like Saints Row 2. They did later remove the unneeded the in the description.

Meeting Fina: Formative Femininity in Skies of Arcadia

tumblr_inline_o8iq1uPQGw1sm6x4z_500_zpst

Quote

I’ve made no secret of my love for Skies of Arcadia, a now cult classic JRPG for the Sega Dreamcast. My first paid piece of writing heavily focuses on its positivity and energy as compared to the tone of modern games. I’ve used it to explore the notion of authenticity in art. I’ve brought it up in examining the dichotomy of narrative and systems. I couldn’t avoid taking about it during my first podcast at Giant Bomb. I have done a completely exhaustive Let’s Play for the game.

If you read my work, this game will be mentioned. Shuntarō Tanaka created something that changed my life forever. It has helped guide my moral compass, inspired me to work hard, and fundamentally changed who I am for the better. It is the title I keep close to mind if I ever doubt that games are worth talking about. It is my proof that the endeavor of games and criticism is justified and necessary. The first time I played it, I wept. I was eleven years old, watching the credits scroll on a small CRTV in the basement. I cried, rushing upstairs. I told my mother that I had just played the best game ever. I still cry when I play Skies of Arcadia. I cry during my Let’s Play. I’m not ashamed of it. For me, the game is inexorably linked to ideas of emotionality, passion, and honesty. But that’s not what we’re going to talk about today.

The Warhammer 40k License - A Total Change of Strategy - Extra Credits

Quote

Games Workshop (of Warhammer fame) offers a great case study in taking physical IP and transferring it to the digital world. Back in the 90s when tabletop games were at their peak, GW licensed a company called SSI Mindscape to produce games using the Warhammer IP. That company collapsed, and the IP then moved to a bigger game developer: THQ. This new partner produced big budget games meant to stand on their own as beacons of quality. If players liked the games enough to try tabletop, great, but primarily the video games were meant to stand on their own. Then THQ collapsed. In the wake of that change, GW has adopted an entirely different strategy: rather than focus on one partner, they now hand minor licenses out to almost any developer who asks, regardless of their track record or ability to produce quality games. There are many factors which could have motivated this change. GW has been struggling financially with declining stocks and management shake-ups, and putting out a slew of video games at no cost to themselves has the potential to bring in welcome short-term revenue. These video game tie-ins also function as advertisements for GW's core business, again at no cost to them. The odds of a satisfied tabletop player quitting because of an unsatisfying video game seem pretty low. It also gives GW a chance to vet developers, determining from actual product performance if there might be a dev they want to entrust with a larger license for big projects. Finally, their shotgun approach to video game licensing lets them put Warhammer games on all platforms, in a wide variety of genres, giving them a numerically higher probability of stumbling onto a hit. Since other toy or game companies (Hasbro, LEGO, DC) are now also starting to move into the video game market, GW provides an interesting test case. Will they follow its lead? Or will they consider the long-term value of their brand name too important to risk?

Stellaris: the cricket people kept wrecking buildings forever. They knew no other way to live.

20160510055838_1_zpsqcqg2wsm.jpg

Quote

In one of my first games of Stellaris, I conquered a couple of planets from a neighboring mushroom-person empire. On one of these planets, the mushroom colonists coexisted with a species of non-sentient humanoid crickets. Both the truffle people and the (non-sentient!) cricket people rose up in revolt against my rule together, and caused a bit of minor mayhem.

Some of the problems, and potential problems, with Stellaris.

Postmortem: Paradox Development Studio's Stellaris

Quote

I wrote high concepts for both options, but we eventually went ahead with the latter for several reasons. We saw a potential opening in that market and we didn’t want to compete too much with our own historical games. We also wanted to make a truly accessible and easy-to-learn game for once, and the small, symmetrical start of the standard 4X lends itself better to that purpose. So, when it was clear that Europa Universalis IV was another hit, production went ahead full speed on what was to become Stellaris!

My basic idea was to marry scripted, branching storytelling with the 4X genre and our own Grand Strategy formula. I love the little stories in the game FTL (and, naturally, Crusader Kings II), so I thought it should be possible…. and it really seems it was, because so far Stellaris has broken all records for the studio!

Postmortem: Stoic Studio's Banner Saga 2

Banner%20Saga%202%20-%20Rook%20Opening_z

Quote

Banner Saga 2 is the second part of a planned trilogy. After the successful launch of Banner Saga 1, we had a mighty tailwind and our sails were full.

However, we soon hit some challenges which slowed us down and distracted us for some time.

After what amounted to two years of brutal crunch to get the first game launched we took a much-needed break. The three of us variously rested, traveled and caught up on the parts of our lives that had been suppressed or neglected.

Then, a series of technical projects, including localization and porting, consumed most of John Watson's time for the next year. Alex Thomas, the writer of the first game, decided to set off on his own to work on his own project. We brought Drew McGee on to write the next game, and he and Arnie Jorgensen began preproduction and planning. We had some false starts, but a year later, with E3 2015 looming on the horizon, we started production in earnest. We brought Matthew Rhoades onto the team for technical design work and that E3 showing was our first fully fleshed out vertical slice of the game.

About that blurb aboud e3 demos having bad writing. I wasn't there, haven't seen it, don't really care about trialers and AAA tech demos, but I think it's quite possible bad writing is kind of a given for early stages of game development. I mean maybe they're still writing the entire storyline, and they don't want to spoil anything, they don't have future context for anything, and past context can also be missing. Not to mention they may have even not established the character behaviors in general yet.
