Well I do not mind SWTOR, though the gear restrictions can be annoying I believe you still get the base story for free. Though I am willing to be corrected on this since it has been awhile since I played.

The only MMO I can think of that hasn't already been named is Path of Exile which plays similar to Diablo and it has one of the best business models in the F2P market.

If you're interested in looking at upcoming F2P MMOs, here's the ones I know of (some of these might have changed to Buy2Play now): Dauntless, Lost Ark, Lineage Eternal, Albion Online, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, and Crowfall.

He did say *free* MMOs, and Guild Wars is pay to play.

There's a free MMO on Steam called The SKIES. It's kinda like a Mad Max style RPG with shooting elements with zoned PvP and vehicle combat. It's still in early alpha and hasn't been updated since October, so tread carefully.

The main game is free

The expansion is pay to play.

The main game is free with some restrictions (naturally) but its still possible to reach max level, however if you want full experience, its better to buy  the game.

Considering F2P MMOs are my forte here are a few I think you should check out.

FPS:

http://crossfire.z8games.com/ - Basically your F2P version of Counterstrike and one of the most successful.

(By the way the game runs much more smoothly, that guy just has terrible FPS lol.)

https://www.warface.com/ - Mixes the twitch shooting of Call of Duty, the class system of Battlefield and the 'fun' game modes offered in Halo. Also features co-op missions that change daily.

https://operation7.eu/ - For those who wish Counterstrike featured an announcer more over the top than the guy from unreal tournament as well as the ability to literally build your weapon however you like.

Tactical Intervention - Again a better version of Counterstrike, only way more hilarious.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/51100/

RPG:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/ - These april fools jokes.

Seriously though GW2 has already established itself as one of the greatest (and recently made F2P) MMOs out there with it's amazing art and visuals, compelling story and characters and the sheer god-like ability to move during combat.

http://www.runescape.com/ - Can't get more classic than this

This one's mostly nostalgia for me. I wouldn't really recommend it unless you like classic top down RPGs with lots of grinding and questing... that unfortunately takes place in a pretty limited area due to "you not being a member you filthy free player" - random jagex employee

http://mabinogi.nexon.net/landing/ - This is unequivocally the best game Nexon has ever produced. I don't care if I can throw stone statues at people in Vindictus or if I can be bored to death in Maplestory, this is the best game they have ever produced.

And that music, OH MY GOD THAT MUSIC!

With no class system to speak of and no level cap you can master (almost) every skill in the game, explore every area, and do every dungeon/mission all with no restrictions aside from acquiring a dungeon pass for higher difficulty levels.

Guild Wars 2 is probably the best mmorpg that is free to play, you can't get it on steam so you will have to search it on google.

Except the Devs abandoned the game, like their previous game, and are now working on Intershelter http://store.steampowered.com/app/520530/

I would stay far away from those devs if i was you.

On their FB page for The Skies they said it's still being worked on, but that was in November. According to them they've been redoing a lot of the game's server and client code from the ground up and that's why updates have stopped, not that they were exactly frequent with new content anyway. Apparently the company has a couple offices in Ukraine so I can buy that they might have more than one dev team, but if they did really abandon The Skies it's not exactly a big deal, it was a free game and it still works for the most part.
