NSS: Five Favorite Experiences of INDIECADE 2017.

Quote

While Team Beat is covering NYCC from Javits to Soho, I decided to take in some of the most trippy interactive experiences being created today at Indiecade 2017. For the past ten years, a tiny independent group with a passion for games that go beyond shooting zombies have been putting on the Sundance of the video game industry. Indiecade celebrates the weird and wonderful art of gaming. These diverse curated creations go beyond screens into immersive experiences designed by creative voices who will shape the future of interactive entertainment. Here are our favorite five experiences from Indiecade 2017:

7 Little Details Worth Noticing in Assassin's Creed: Origins

Quote

New Assassins Creed Origins gameplay! We played over 4 hours of Assassins Creed Origins on Xbox One X at a recent Ubisoft demo, and it's safe to say the game is looking stunning. We know that Assassins Creed Origins combat and map size are big talking points around the game, but what about the smaller details worth noticing? LEt's take a closer look.

Assassin's Creed Origins: how Ubisoft painstakingly recreated ancient Egypt

Quote

In 49 BCE Cleopatra ascended to the Egyptian throne amid enormous geopolitical upheaval and radical change. With the final war of the Roman Republic brewing, the period has proven hugely influential in fine art, theatre and film, from Shakespeare to Hollywood. But later this year it may be subject to its most rigorous investigation yet: a video game.

Assassin’s Creed Origins DLC lets you battle Egyptian gods, giant scorpions

Quote

Assassin’s Creed Origins’ season pass will include two story-driven expansions that will be released in 2018, including one that will let players — as protagonist Bayek — battle mythical Egyptian beasts. A piece of free downloadable content will go a little bigger, letting you fight the Egyptian gods themselves.

You can't spend real money on Assassin's Creed Origins' lootboxes

Quote

Lootboxes are something of a contentious issue at the moment - from Overwatch to Call of Duty: WWII, they’re pretty much everywhere you could care to look. So news that they’d be cropping up in Assassin’s Creed Origins was unexpected, if not entirely welcome. Fortunately, it seems that the game’s boxes are only available to buy with in-game currency.

Wolfenstein II's Wheelchair Segment Has a Surprising Inspiration

AfRP4hI.png

Quote

There are a lot of reasons to look forward to Wolfenstein II. Like the last one, it promises to be an immaculately designed shooter with tight, intuitive level design and an endless opportunity to kill Nazis. But also notable is an early showcase of the developer’s attention to detail as seen in the game’s opening sequence. As I wrote during PAX West 2017, in it, the protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz, captive aboard a German Nazi naval vessel, is confined to a wheelchair after a serious injury. The following gameplay section sees Blazkowicz navigating the ship’s maze like machinations from the confines of the apparatus, encountering various obstacles and finding strategic solutions around them along the way.

"It's disturbing that Wolfenstein can be considered a controversial political statement"

Quote

"Wolfenstein has been a decidedly anti-Nazi series since the first release more than 20 years ago. We aren't going to shy away from what the game is about. We don't feel it's a reach for us to say Nazis are bad and un-American, and we're not worried about being on the right side of history here."

As much as DICE’s first Star Wars Battlefront was a technical achievement, several players felt that the videogame’s feature set and gameplay were lacking. The 2015 shooter was far removed from the original Battlefront games from Pandemic Studios, themselves inspired by DICE’s own Battlefield series. What came in its place were Star Cards, a season pass and other questionable design choices.

Once you have gathered the supplies needed to fix the missile, you are treated to a cutscene of the rocket blasting towards the sky, backed by Richard Wagner's rousing classical song, Ride of the Valkyries. Obsidian put extra effort into making this sequence look, sound, and feel as good as possible. Lead designer Josh Sawyer wanted to see how it looked for himself once it was finished. But, unfortunately, his viewing was rudely interrupted by a tap on the shoulder - an NPC really wanted to talk to him about bottlecaps.
