No Talk About New Steam Review Censorship?

7 posts in this topic

I thought for sure this would be all over the gamer YouTube videos.  Most Especially the Angry Joe Show.

If some have not heard, Steam now allows Devs to censor or even delete reviews from the review ratings if they consider them "off topic" in any way.

Off topic seems to boil down to anything that upsets the devs.  You are able to opt out, IF you find out about it, and IF you can find the option

(which is buried deep in the menus).  Otherwise, the slightest wrong word; wrong description; or even if you happen to put your negative review up at the same time others do

(which is considered review bombing, and can be deleted).  Of course, positive reviews of all kinds are not affected.  .  .

The system targets reviews left by assholes during review bombing campaigns who are all doing it at the same time and leaving comments largely or completely irrelevant to the quality of the game in question and similar to one another, also focusing on ones left right around the same time that are suddenly all negative when that wasn't the case previously. I'm sure the more abusive and toxic or clickbait Youtubers are already complaining about this, as I've seen in some cases, but the more general group of Youtubers and reporters are not going to be upset to see 100s or 1000s of spam reviews complaining about a game going to the Epic store, lacking Chinese language options, having female characters, taking down Pewdiepie videos, firing a xenophobic developer, etc to be a bad thing. The reviews are also not deleted but flagged as suspicious by Steam itself and not counted towards the recent total average, even positive ones made during the time are flagged as suspicious, which is quite a bit different than the game's developers or publishers deleting actual negative reviews. I can clearly see that by looking at the Borderlands 2 reviews and just checked to confirm this, which also means your post isn't telling the truth in any way. I don't know why anyone (other than Youtube grifters making money off drama) would treat Steam preventing the misuse of one of their own features on their own platform as a censorship issue, when the alternative is intentionally gaining more off topic rambling Steam reviews that make it more difficult to find quality products by the more casual gamers that would bother to read them in the first place while making developers trust the platform even less.

I can not believe this is actually a comment on the ANGRY JOE forums.  Most of AJ's reviews would be deleted according to the new censorship implementation.  If you don't like another person's review, that's YOUR problem, not your right to delete it.  What Steam is doing is not a slippery slope, it's a greased fire pole by developers wanting control over the only voice game consumers have left.

Review bombs are this generations only form of protest against the insane near constant releases of "You done fucked it up!" games.

They don't delete the reviews and they aren't hidden,  It's very clearly shown if they flagged a period of off-topic reviews with an asterisk beside the "very positive" or "overwhelmingly positive".  The period of those reviews are just not counted in the recent and overall average calculation as explained in the description when you hover over them to see the percentage.  The reviews will still show up, just not on the front page score that says "overwhelmingly positive (12345)".  If you really care about that number then the preferences button is right above the steam reviews with the note "* Period(s) of off-topic review activity detected Excluded from the Review Score (by default)".  You can see this yourself if you look at the borderlands 2 reviews.

Just because Joe chose the name Angry doesn't mean we gathered a community or admin focused around nonsensical misplaced outrage about features we haven't bothered looking into or are actively trying to trick people into thinking work a different way, all while repeating generic fear-mongering phases we don't seem to know the meaning of.

Based on the misuse of censorship, I had assumed you had just listened to some rant video on Youtube or read an article on one of the clickbait outrage sites that sprang up a few years ago but now you are just clearly lying or are intentionally trying to misunderstand not only how this effects things and what kinds of things it effects, in addition to saying options are hidden or buried in menus when there are large asterisks and text areas above and to the side of the review area pointing you towards the simply explained two option choice preference menu.

It's absolutely Steams right to curate their platform as they see fit in an effort to make their features work in their intended way when they host the content. They also don't delete so you're still lying about how this works on top of not wanting people to manage their own communities and business.

I'm sure that's why just about every review bombing campaign I've seen has been completely unrelated to the content of a game, left years after release, based on irrelevant complaints about publisher actions with new titles who might not even have published older games, or based around harassment campaigns launched by Youtubers and outrage sites lying about things or telling fans to spam developers for inclusive policies and statements.

Shill all you want, you are defending and making excuses for Devs censoring reviews.  They ARE removed from all view and statistics calculated, for everyone, unless you happen to find out what they are doing, dig into the settings, and opt out.  It should be obt in if anything, at the very least.

It's censorship, plain and simple, and exactly what the devs of some games wanted when review bombed for horrible game releases.

And again, not one negative review Angry Joe has made would not be removed if texted to a Steam forum now.

This is indeed the Eloi generation.
