The five best things we played at PAX East

Quote

Last week, Aoife and I flew out to PAX East (which is run by Eurogamer's parent company ReedPOP) to sample some lobster and play some video games, although not necessarily in that order (they were interspersed). Since this is Eurogamer and not Eurocrustacean, here are the five best games we played at PAX East and not the five best times we ate lobster in Boston.

Designing A Lost Language For Heaven's Vault | Rezzed Sessions | EGX Rezzed 2019

Quote

The new game from 80 Days creators inkle, Heaven's Vault, is an archaeological adventure with an entire hieroglyphic language to decipher, where every puzzle has a narrative reason to exist and every solution has a meaning. Narrative Director Jon Ingold will present an honest tour of the two-year design process of the mechanic, from laughable prototypes, up impossible learning curves, to hot non-linear video-game linguistics. Ooh la la.

Fantasy General 2: Invasion announced and due in 2019

Quote

Fantasy General was probably the first hex-based strategy game I was able to wrap my head around as a kid, so today’s announcement of Fantasy General 2: Invasion fills me with curiosity. Developed by Owned By Gravity and to be published by mostly-serious strategy house Slitherine, it is, once again, a hex-based wargame packed with elves, goblins and wizards. Unlike the original (a fun but scattershot spinoff of the Panzer General series), the devs aim to make this one a little more story-driven and coherent. Below, the debut trailer, plus some footage from a developer live-stream earlier today.

Randy Pitchford: “What part of ‘2K makes Borderlands 3’s publishing decisions’ don’t you understand?”

Quote

Earlier this week, after a Borderlands 3 leak suggested that the game would be an Epic Games store exclusive, developer Gearbox’s CEO, Randy Pitchford, refused to confirm where his new title would launch.

Borderlands 3 will have split-screen, but only on console

Quote

A new Borderlands 3 trailer has just dropped, confirming several important details that had leaked since its announcement last week: the release date, and the fact that it will be a six-month Epic Games Store exclusive. The trailer also shows split-screen in action, and 2K has since confirmed to us that “Borderlands 3 will support two-player split-screen on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.” No mention of PC, there, you’ll notice.

Borderlands 3 was “developed from the ground up with AMD”

Quote

The upcoming looty, shooty gun-fest from Gearbox Software has been tailored to get the most out of AMD Ryzen CPUs and Radeon GPUs. Publisher 2K says Borderlands 3 was “developed from the ground up with AMD”, which could mean, if all goes to plan, Borderlands 3 will be one of the first AAA games to make the most out of AMD Navi silicon.

Steam's new "off topic" protections kick in over Borderlands review bombing

Quote

Reading a few, I also suspect that many users have cottoned on to the fact that they can just leave a negative review without mentioning Epic to skirt Valve’s “off topic” rules. It’s not possible to prove why someone took to Steam yesterday to write, for example, “This game is sooooo boring, that I literally fell asleep each time I played it,” but the timing seems awfully convenient.

Overtaking Nostalgia To Create The Fantasy Of Knights & Bikes | Rezzed Sessions | EGX Rezzed 2019

Foam Sword’s upcoming title Knights And Bikes is a game which uses 1980s pop-culture nostalgia as a starting-point, but then goes on a more unusual journey through the rugged Cornish countryside and then deeper into Arthurian legend. Creative director Rex Crowle shares the development of the game’s tone, setting and art style, the influences behind it and tips picked up from previous projects like LittleBigPlanet and leading the development of Tearaway at Media Molecule.

Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night Doesn't Feel Quite Right In Its Latest Demo

kb3J6OU.png

Quote

While at PAX East I finally had the opportunity to try Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. What I played left me intrigued but ultimately underwhelmed. Of all the Castlevania-inspired games due out this year, like Cyber Shadow and upcoming DLC for The Messenger, I’m now less excited about the one actually coming from one of the series’ most renowned developers.

Pathway goes raiding for lost arks on April 11th

Quote

Indiana Jones-ish, Nazi-mashing tactical RPG Pathway is just over the horizon, launching next Thursday, April 11th. Developed by Robotality, it’s looking like a major step up over their debut tactics game Halfway. It appears to be a tantalising blend of FTL, Curious Expedition and cover-based, very XCOM squad combat – there’s exploration, bartering, party building and lots of RPG granularity, and five semi-procedural campaigns.

Trials Of Fire is turn-based strategy with deckbuilding and post-apocalyptic ethics

Quote

Sometimes, press releases just throw as many words as possible at you and see what sticks. Words like “vast procedural overworld adventure”, “multi-character deck-driven combat”, and even “recurrent tactical optimisation”. That last phrase makes me want to stick my head in a bin, but “deck-driven” has been grabbing my attention ever since Slay The Spire sucked up 300 hours of it, so here we are.

Draugen departs to unravel nordic mysteries next month

Quote

Scenic Norwegian mystery Draugen might have missed its original 2015 release date a tad, but judging by today’s story trailer, it hasn’t suffered for its extra development time. Now due out next month, Red Thread Games and writer Ragnar Tørnquist (The Longest Journey, The Secret World) are ready to show a little more of their 1920s investigative adventure. Amusingly described by the developers as “Fjord Noir”, players control Edward Harden, a bookish, nervous sort searching for his missing sister with the help of his young ward, Lissie.

Ben & Dan resume adventuring in Lair Of The Clockwork God

They said it couldn’t be done, they said it mightn’t be done, and I still mutter that it probably won’t be done, but it seems Ben & Dan will finally reunite later this year. The stars of Ben There, Dan That! and Time Gentlemen, Please! (and alter-egos of Ben Ward and Dan Marshall) will return in a new adventure, Lair Of The Clockwork God.

Paranoia: Happiness Is Mandatory takes us troubleshooting in 2019

Quote

Contrary to Disney propaganda, Alpha Complex is the happiest place on Earth. You now this because the Computer says so, and disagreeing with Friend Computer is treason. Paranoia: Happiness Is Mandatory is a long-awaited videogame adaptation of the darkly comic tabletop RPG, developed by Black Shamrock and Cyanide, and out later this year. Players lead a squad of elite (not really) Troubleshooters, the most expendable of all red-clearance clone citizens in Alpha Complex, a dystopian underground city. There’s trouble? You shoot it. With a smile. See the debut trailer below.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2: Year 1 Update - Invasion: Battle for D.C. | Ubisoft [NA]

Quote

The Division 2 rolls out its first major update tomorrow, starting a mini-season of content Ubisoft and Massive are calling Invasion: Battle For DC. Broken up into three updates, tomorrow’s adds the Stronghold mission to take down the high-tech Black Tusk faction, a new World Tier with new invaded missions and a new PvP map. On April 25th, the game is due its first eight-player raid plus the first season-pass-exclusive Classified Assignments. Due later (but not dated) is the fourth Specialisation sub-class, seemingly letting players carry a minigun, because subtlety is overrated.

Sunless Skies overhauls Albion in the Wayfarer update

Gt3wbcc.png

Quote

Bizarre, beautiful and brilliant sky-train simulator Sunless Skies is a stonking game, and a notable improvement over its nautical (but nice) predecessor, but nothing is perfect. Today, Failbetter rolled out the first major update for the game, overhauling Albion, home of space-London and the second hub area of the game. The Wayfarer update also gives officers more options for work outside of your train, adds dangerous new consequences for taking damage in battle and toughens up the survival aspects of the game. The sky is slightly less vast, but more terrifying now.

These allegations come via an internal Microsoft email chain obtained by Quartz – the outlet says it has verified the contents of the email with a pair of Microsoft employees. The emails began on March 20 as one employee asked other women in the company about advancement after six years in the same position. That chain has grown to over 90 pages worth of discussion from women at the company, including numerous reports of discrimination and sexual harassment.

Quote

If you’re grooving the vibe of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice but think you might enjoy it more at a slower pace, hey, you can do that. The game may not have difficulty options but a player-made tweaktool does grant the ability to futz with the speed of not only the whole game but your fella specifically too. If you want to stretch time just a touch, it can help. If you want to zip around while the baddies are in slo-mo, go for it. If you want to make everything twice as fast for a full-on murderhell experience, oh god, you can do that too.

Dragon Ball FighterZ Player Overwhelmed After Winning Tournament He Lost Last Year

Quote

The fighting game community has expanded over the last decade, to the point where its competitive calendar provides a constant stream of tournaments to attend and watch online. While this can be overwhelming at times, it also lets players gauge their growth on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis. A Dragon Ball FighterZ competitor came face to face with his own improvement after becoming champion at last weekend’s South Louisiana Major (SLAM), an event he just barely lost the year before.

"The Epic Games Store is Spyware:" How a Toxic Accusation Was Started by Anti-Chinese Sentiment

ffvSjrC.jpg

Quote

A quick search online of the terms "Epic Games Store" and "Spyware" pulls up a variety of results, mostly of commenters saying that yes, Epic Games Store is spyware. There's also a highly-cited Reddit thread titled, "Epic Game Store, Spyware, Tracking, and You!"

The accusations though are largely baseless, and criticisms of improper data handling aren't new to the Epic Games Store. EA's Origin service faced similar accusations when it first launched. The Epic Games Store is, safe to say, certainly not a spy agency for the Chinese government, but Epic's relationship with a Chinese corporation has complicated the narrative and reinforced certain stereotypes.

Why People Are So Mad About The Epic Games Store

Quote

The free market is rarely, if ever, actually free, and competition, especially inside a well-oiled money-making machine like Steam, isn’t fair. People game the system precisely because Steam is unfair. Success often comes down to who can ride luck, the wax and wane of genre preferences, timing, gimmicks, algorithmic shifts, and even underhanded tactics like lying about release dates to the top of a select handful of charts that go a disproportionately long way toward determining success or failure.

This inherent unfairness is present, too, in the competition between Steam and Epic, and it creates a similar sort of tension that Steam users can only vent through rage. In theory, “fair” competition would involve another service coming along with a better feature set than Steam and winning the day on merit alone. Easy enough. But, nestled within that sleek shell of simplicity is a briar ball of thorny particularities.

The Rise And Fall Of Telltale Games

t1wEpxa.jpg

Quote

As he waited for the hundreds of employees to trickle into the room, Telltale CEO Pete Hawley cracked some jokes, easing the tension for a moment before discussing the matter at hand. The entire studio had received the meeting invitation just an hour and a half beforehand, and confusion spread quick. “Were you invited?” coworkers asked one another, each wondering about the nature of the meeting. Some were concerned it was a small batch of layoffs, while others were convinced it was good news after hearing talk of new investors. If anything, things looked promising with Telltale’s next big, high-profile projects on the horizon, including the finale to The Walking Dead, a Stranger Things game born out of a Netflix partnership, and the anticipated return of The Wolf Among Us. This made Hawley’s next words all the more shocking.

In December 2018, developer BioWare teased the next Dragon Age game, hinting at a mysterious future for the popular fantasy series—one that’s enticing, but seems very far away. Why, more than four years after Dragon Age: Inquisition, is Dragon Age 4 still so early in development? The answer is complicated, and reflective of BioWare’s turbulence over the past decade.

Meet 100 of the most influential women working in the UK games industry

Quote

Some of us on the GamesIndustry.biz team put together a list of 100 influential women in the UK games industry back in 2014. It was a good list, full of brilliant creative minds, genius programmers, clever marketers and popular journalists. But there was a clear 100 winners. There were not many people who didn't make the list who people were surprised by. There were no complaints.

What a difference half a decade makes. We had over 500 emails nominating more than 450 women for this year's GamesIndustry.biz 100. The nominees were so strong that - thanks to our sponsor Amiqus - we were able to invite every single one to our special celebratory party at EGX Rezzed.

SEKIRO: ACCESSIBILITY IN GAMES IS ABOUT FAR MORE THAN 'DIFFICULTY'

Quote

An accessibility expert weighs in on how accessibility in games is vital, and 'difficulty' is relative.

Easy Mode Isn’t An Easy Fix For Accessibility

Quote

People in general seem incredibly reluctant to actually change the fundamentals of design in order to make their games more approachable. When I went looking for colorblindness solutions for Counterstrike: Global Offensive, a game I can barely play because the color design makes it impossible to see enemies, the consensus that I was told was that allowing an option to make my life easier playing the game would let other, more able bodied people “cheat” by having better visibility (if that’s the case they’re already cheating against me because I literally cannot see them half the time!). I got a similar response with Overwatch, a game that everyone lauded for having any color palette at all but never bothered to analyse if that color palette was at all readable; I was told the game already had colorblindness options in the form of a full-screen tint that…tints the entire screen and is therefore useless to me. I can’t play DotA 2 because the increasing excessiveness of the cosmetics makes it more and more difficult for me to process what exactly is going on in the game due to visual sensory problems relating to autism, and Valve aren’t going to add a toggle-off to their cash cow any time soon. Several areas of The Witness are either far more difficult or straight up impossible for me because I can’t properly see the puzzle I’m supposed to be solving. Do you know what the lead director, Jonathan Blow, told people with disabilities that gave them difficulties with certain parts? “Just skip that area”. Thanks dude.

Quote

Although two very different-looking games on the surface, Celeste and Sekiro share similar design philosophies according to Hamilton – and it’s not being “hard” games, which is often a reductive term. “The designers of games that people view [as hard], whether it’s Sekiro, Cuphead, Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV, Celeste and so on have a shared design intent, and it isn’t ‘hard’ – it’s success through persistence,” Hamilton said.

Interplay Takes on Trek

vpsb66p.gif

Quote

Given this passing of the torch that seemed to be in progress, most computer-game publishers were skeptical of Paramount’s plans for games featuring the original Enterprise and its crew in their youngest incarnations. They felt that this version of Star Trek was already all but dead in commercial terms, what with the success of all of the franchise’s more recent productions.

Brian Fargo of Interplay Entertainment was among the few who didn’t agree with this point of view. He pitched a computer game to Paramount that would share a name with Konami’s efforts, but would otherwise be a completely separate experience. Aided by his natural charm and the relative disinterest of most of Interplay’s competitors, he made the deal.

NOCLIP MAKES LONG-FORM GAMING DOCUMENTARIES THAT BREAK NEARLY EVERY YOUTUBE RULE

sXkI0vm.jpg

Quote

That may sound like a lot, but by YouTube standards, Noclip’s output is comparatively small. In 2018, it released nine full-length documentaries, the first of which didn’t debut until March. Meanwhile, 2017 had a much more regular pace. O’Dwyer says that gap in early 2018 was intentional. Like many creators, he has suffered serious bouts of burnout, struggling to keep up with the demands, whether real or perceived, of a large online community. “Creator burnout is very, very real,” he says. “Especially with the patron number, it can feel a bit like plate spinning. If you don’t touch for a while, the number is trickling down because of my output. And it kind of is because of your output, but it’s also because of a lot of other reasons. There’s no way of getting used to that besides time.”

Jonathan is power incarnate. How to use that power and the resulting consequences drive the game‘s biggest question: Who deserves care and who deserves death?

Crazy Taxi Tycoon and the Art of Selling Out

It’s here that the game makes its central claim: that all rebellion will eventually be digested and integrated into the system, thus made benign. Your business may be diverse, but its project is not social uplift. It’s just business.

The Haunting of Billie Lurk: Queer Spectrality in the Dishonored Franchise

hviqA4X.jpg

Quote

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, a stand-alone expansion for Dishonored 2, represents a radical departure from the politics of the franchise. Its protagonist is Billie Lurk: Queer and black and barely scraping by. What she seeks isn’t personal power or to straighten things out, but resolution and absolution: to remove from existence the figure of the Outsider himself, and with it the magic that people like Emily and Corvo have used to uphold the status quo, and that she and her mentor Daud, too, have used to pass judgement on the world. It tells a story about people in the margins, about the abuse of power, the exploitation of the poor. It looks at these things from the perspective of the marginalised, rather than as a problem to be fixed from above. But it’s also something else: it’s a story about hauntings, on several levels. And as recent scholars of the gothic have observed, hauntings are often terribly queer.

Shenmue's Much-Hated Forklifts Feel Revolutionary Today

Quote

Mario has Yoshi. Link has Epona. Ryo Hazuki has a forklift. This unassuming industrial vehicle has become so closely identified with Shenmue that when series director Yu Suzuki wanted to tease the announcement of Shenmue III, all he had to do was tweet a picture of one. For both advocates and detractors, Shenmue’s forklift sequences are emblematic of how unexpected, different, and downright strange the much-hyped adventure game turned out to be, compared to the game we were conditioned to expect.

Earlier today, he tweeted “For those asking, I do not know why I was banned from EVE and removed from the CSM. I have asked for clarification and have received none. I categorically deny any wrongdoing and look forward to clearing my name and having my reputation restored.”
