Signs of the Sojourner is a card game with chats instead of battles

Quote

Deck-building games typically give you cards that represent weapons or spells or a big orc who wants to smash heads. Sometimes you get a field. Your deck is your arsenal. Not so in Signs of the Sojourner, however, where you must use cards to forge connections with people and develop your personality.

Roadwarden is an upcoming wilderness exploration interactive fiction, with a demo out now

3VyOfJE.png

Quote

There’s so much appeal to just wandering about in games, which is perhaps what first drew me to Roadwarden. The game’s named for the job title of its protagonist, one of the few people who explore the wilderness in its setting. “They deliver messages, assist merchants, burn human corpses, and, if possible, get rid of beasts and highwaymen,” says the opening description. And there’s a demo available now, so you can see if this is the right career path for you.

System Shock 3 ‘has a lot of interest from publishers’

FITIOte.png

Quote

System Shock 3’s search for a new publisher has attracted “a lot of interest”, according to OtherSide Entertainment, but the studio’s not ruling out self-publishing the game if it has to.

Mech strategy Phantom Brigade has a new combat system that lets you peer into the future

Quote

The upcoming strategy from Brace Yourself Games combines turn-based planning with real time action.

Clan Introduction - Toreador - Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2

Quote

Obsessed with beauty in all forms, there are those Toreador who would claim that their Clan only chooses the most accomplished artists of each generation - whether they wielded the brush, the pen, their voice, body or mind. It'd only be half a lie. Influencing the political, social, and cultural elite, the Toreador have been well entrenched within Seattle's power structure since its days as a pioneer settlement.

George R.R. Martin: “I’ve consulted on a video game out of Japan”

Quote

Back in March, YouTube channel Spawn Wave published a video discussing a rumor regarding the next project from Dark Souls and Bloodborne developer From Software, which stated it is an open-world title on which George R.R. Martin is one of the lead writers, with various kingdoms to visit and abilities to obtain from killing the leaders of those kingdoms.

In this excerpt from The Game Informer Show podcast, Ben Hanson interviews David Brevik about working on the Diablo-inspired Action-RPG Marvel Heroes while at Gazillion and what lessons it pulled from Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

Persona Q2 Has Me In An Extremely Fun Feedback Loop

doZVHKM.png

Quote

Persona Q, a 2014 turn-based role-playing game for the 3DS, put Persona 3 and 4 characters into an extended “what-if” scenario where they had to band together and navigate gigantic labyrinths to escape an abandoned high school. It’s easily one of my favorite 3DS games, so you can imagine I was pretty hype for Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, out June 4 on the 3DS. It’s a sequel that brings the Phantom Thieves from Persona 5 into the mix. I’m 25 hours in, and I have barely been able to put the game down.

Until Dawn dev's new nautical horror Man of Medan gets an August release date

Quote

Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games has revealed that Man of Medan, the first instalment in its Dark Pictures Anthology horror series, will be scaring up a storm on Xbox One, PS4, and PC on 30th August.

Sources: Call of Duty 2020 In Upheaval As Treyarch Takes Over, Plans Black Ops 5

Gmd2SBO.png

Quote

Next year’s Call of Duty has gone through a major upheaval, as publisher Activision informed developers this week that studios Raven and Sledgehammer, which had until now led the project, will no longer be in charge. Instead, according to three people familiar with goings-on at the companies, Treyarch will lead development on a new Black Ops for 2020.

Lords of the Fallen 2 studios fall out over quality of work, one leaves project

ag6Oxzq.jpg

Quote

"We categorically disagree with the portrayal of Defiant Studios made by CI Games."

Lords Of The Fallen 2 drops new devs Defiant Studios

Quote

Despite the first game being a bit rubbish, publisher City Interactive Games are insistent on making Lords Of The Fallen 2 a thing. They’ve also booted recently-hired developers Defiant Studios from it just one year into production. As reported (and translated from Polish) by Eurogamer, the publisher announced via a press release that their partnership was being terminated over “inadequate execution by Defiant [of] a key work stage”. It seems that the publisher were unhappy with both the quality and timeliness of the project, although Defiant disagree with CI’s portrayal of their company.

Conglomerate 451 brings cyberpunk dungeon crawling to early access next week

Quote

Dungeon-crawling hackathon Conglomerate 451 will be hitting Steam early access next week, opening its maglev doors to a world of grimy concrete and pink neon. Players will be able to hack themselves and the world around them in an attempt to overcome the baddies without sustaining ongoing injuries or agent death, the latter of which will necessitate wheeling out a fresh clone who might have the same face but won’t remember any of the upgrades they received before death. A fitting way of dealing with new recruits, considering the genre. Here’s a trailer showing off some of the fighting and biomodding.

Fade to Silence’s antagonist is a Lovecraftian GLaDOS that wants to see you fail

Quote

There’s little company in the frozen wastes of Fade to Silence. The world as we know it has been lost to an eternal winter, and a harsh landscape of ice and snow now smothers the Earth. The post-apocalypse is a lonely place. With most of the population dead, it’s difficult to find any survivors, let alone one who can lighten the mood with a casual chit-chat.

Total War: THREE KINGDOMS - Liu Bei Launch Trailer [PEGI UK]

Quote

A hero rises as a nation crumbles. With Han dynasty blood flowing through his veins and a heart that beats only for the good of his country, Liu Bei stands unwavering against incredible odds. His foes have more money, money troops, more weapons, and more land. But Liu Bei? He has the people…

Total War: Three Kingdom’s ‘Chapter Packs’ DLC will advance your hero’s story

Quote

With just days to go until the launch of Total War: Three Kingdoms DLC, developer Creative Assembly has dangled a big old carrot in front of us, revealing that there are some exciting goodies to come soon.

Rainbow Six Siege Phantom Sight release date – all the latest details

Quote

The Rainbow Six Siege Operation Phantom Sight release date is just around the corner and as usual, it promises to bring two new operators, a new map in the form of a Kafe rework, and a haul of balancing changes. Usually, we’re left waiting for solid details on the upcoming new operators and their loadouts right up until the official reveal at the Rainbow Six Pro League Finals, however this operation has been rife with leaks so there’s plenty to dig into ahead of the official unveiling.

Epic launches its own version of the Steam summer sale

VHxVRVN.png

Quote

If you happened to buy one of the discounted titles between 2nd and 15th May, Epic will also refund you the difference in price between what you paid then and during the sale - including that extra £10 off. Customers who pre-ordered titles that haven't launched yet will similarly be refunded £10.

Hades’ Epic Games store price hike “stemmed from a miscommunication”

Quote

The Epic Games store sale kicked off yesterday, with discounts of up to 75% and a further $10/£10 reduction on all games priced at $14.99/£13.99 or above. It’s certainly a generous set of offers, but it’s not exactly gone off without a hitch.

Hades pricing and the Epic Mega Sale

Quote

After the sale is over, on June 14, we will be raising the game's retail price to $24.99. We had intended to raise the retail price of the game soon, but made the decision rashly as part of the sale -- we didn't provide advance notice to our customers, despite previously stating we would do so. That was our mistake, and we sincerely apologize.

"I Was Saved By an [Epic Games Store] Exclusivity Deal," Says Indie Dev

Quote

The Epic Games Store exclusivity drama continues as recently a successful indie developer promised not to "sell [their] souls" to get on the Epic Games Store. Now one dev says that this feeling isn't universal as they say they were "saved" by an Epic exclusivity deal.

Steam user scores boost a game’s store placement – mixed is 500% better than negative

6LDciuT.jpg

Quote

Valve has decided against dropping Unity’s positive review score, in part because it wouldn’t affect the game’s visibility much – but the blog post also gives us a rare bit of insight into how the store’s algorithm works. “Games receive a ‘boost’ based upon which user review bucket they’re in (Mixed, Mostly Positive, etc). The actual boost amount is quite small relative to other factors in the Store, and it’s essentially the same for all the Mixed or above review buckets.”

CD Projekt promises less crunch on Cyberpunk 2077 than The Witcher 3

zEddZWy.jpg

Quote

As developers, fans, and industry figures continue to speak out against crunch in game development, CD Projekt bosses Adam Badowski and Marcin Iwiński have pledged to improve things at the studio. The Witcher 3, now broadly regarded as one of the best games in recent memory, was the subject of a notoriously bad crunch period.

Companies to collaborate on new cloud-based solutions for gaming experiences and AI solutions

Report: Microsoft And Sony's Cloud Gaming Collaboration Caught The PlayStation Team By Surprise

Quote

It was a surprise to say the least last week when news broke of a vague agreement between Microsoft and Sony—normally arch rivals in the console gaming space—to team up on “new cloud-based solutions for gaming experiences”. If you think you were shocked, though, spare a thought for the PlayStation team.

The freshman senator from Missouri, who plans to soon introduce a bill that will ban loot boxes and pay-to-win microtransactions, spoke to Kotaku yesterday about his plans.

LCS demands removal of Echo Fox investor who used racist slur

Quote

A report surfaced last month that Echo Fox founder Rick Fox had threatened to leave the company over an investor's use of racist language in an email sent to former Echo Fox CEO Jace Hall. The report prompted Riot Games to launch its own investigation into the allegations—Echo Fox maintains LCS [League of Legends Championship Series] and Academy [an LCS development league] teams—saying that it would "respond accordingly, based on available actions within our team agreements and the LCS Rules."

The Fight To Make Games Accessible For Everyone

VvXyPFE.jpg

Quote

In the decades since their inception, video games have blossomed from their humble origins into a fully-fledged (not to mention handsomely profitable) art form. Around the world, gamers have been seduced by the power and escapism that digital worlds like Skyrim and Hyrule offer and moved by poignant storytelling in titles like What Remains Of Edith Finch. A large portion of consumers and developers have often trumpeted the belief that games are for everyone. However, for a large portion of the gaming population that belief is a hollow fantasy.

How to support videogames in 2019

5lqRvi8.jpg

Quote

As a critic, I’m trying to learn enough, ask enough questions and listen closely enough to speak not to consumer, but to creators. It’s not my task to tell you what to buy and enjoy, but I hope to reach creators and readers with awareness of their taste and tell them why I think something works or not, to offer a different perspective as someone who is attached to the experience in their own way, but not attached as a creator. You can often tell if a game has been affected by its development, and even if you can’t, you might be able to support or soothe fears the developers already had when they were making something.

How Final Fantasy IX's Strategy Guide Turned Out So Horrible (And Other Answers From A Veteran Guide Writer)

0ugwRnx.png

Quote

“The thing about strategy guide publishing is that it’s a parasitic industry,” says Doug Walsh, who spent 18 years writing video game guides for the two biggest publishers, BradyGames and Prima. Perhaps that’s why the infamous Final Fantasy IX guide turned out the way it did.

Divinity: Original Sin’s team “love it” when players break the game

7MqRkiO.jpg

Quote

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an exceptional game about trying to overcome impossible odds – demons, ancient evils, even giant blobs of sentient oil. You can pretty much become a god as you level up, unleashing your powers on everything that stands in your way, but no matter how mighty you get, many of the fights will still be tough. That’s no accident.

Top Streamers Said To Earn $50,000 An Hour Playing New Games

Now I’m motivated!

Bem7TPX.png

Quote

That’s where the magic lies, in the a back-and-forth alchemy where player, character, and boss meet and their reactions to the actual battle as you choose to play it, not through cutscene chatter or flashy but ultimately hollow QTEs. You’re doing this. You’re doing all of this – and you can trust that the game will respond to every last drop of extra effort you put in and do its best to play along with you.

Heaven’s Vault rewards replays by forcing you to live the theory you’re investigating

Epek6AT.png

Quote

In managing to incorporate the idea of replaying the game into the game’s story itself with subtlety and style, Heaven’s Vault is one of those experiences that shows what the medium can do that others cannot; it’s hard to imagine capturing this in quite the same way without play. But Heaven’s Vault does have a close cousin in film: Arrival, based on Ted Chiang’s novella “Story of Your Life.” Both stories are narrative circles that nevertheless advance. The story does not truly end in the same place it started.

Heaven’s Vault is one of the few video games to achieve the same effect.

Persona Can’t Do Women Justice Without Fixing its Conservatism

J3cskDC.png

Quote

Ann’s character, though actually complex and interesting, is ultimately wasted by the game continuously forcing her into the box of “hot, ditzy model” because of the way she embodies her femininity. Futaba, Makoto, and Haru all avoid this because the tropes they embody are meant to be taken more seriously. But Ann’s status as a hot, blonde model constantly pushes her into the role of thirst object, even when this is in direct opposition to the trauma she’s faced. No matter how much she manages to grow, the game always is always policing her, pushing her back into the sexy trope she fought so hard to escape from because of how she presents to the world. This isn’t the only time the Persona franchise has gone down questionable routes with gender.

Rage 2 uses my birth defect as a crude shorthand for mutant freak

The Lazy Design Aesthetic of Misrepresenting Genetic Conditions

Quote

As a geneticist, “mutant” certainly has a different, more specific meaning to me than it does to the average person. For most, the word “mutant” probably conjures images of humanoid ninja turtles, or the comic book superheroes of the X-Men, or maybe the giant orc-adjacent monstrosities of the Fallout series. But for me, “mutant” is a technical term—something we use in my profession to describe a variant form of a gene. I cannot think of a time where, in the professional setting, I’ve heard a human patient referred to as a “mutant”. Rather, they may carry a “mutant gene” or, even more likely, a “mutation”. I do not believe this is due to some pejorative meaning to the term “mutant” per se, but rather because every single one of us is carrying around “mutations” in our genome. Most of those mutations are benign, causing no obvious phenotypic effect. Therefore, calling one specific person a “mutant” in a general sense is rather meaningless.
