A death of a character, especially in anime, can establish so many different scenarios and change so many aspects of a story. Characters ideals, their values, their belief in both the world and themselves can be rocked in an instant. For us the viewer, we can only sit back and watch as the story plays out, powerless to do anything but hope it all works out in the end, and contemplating just how much you invested into this story.

Certain death's that I watched as a gamer and a fan of anime, rocked my soul, and brought me to tears. Though I would be happy to discuss the significance and analyze the themes these deaths provoke lets just get right to the real question.

WHO WOULD YOU SAVE?

Name an anime or game (or even a book if you like),  and Name the character you would save and a brief reason why. (One is enough, I'm just gonna give you a list) (if you got time, a top 5 would be cool )

 

Final Fantasy 7

Aeris (Aerith) : First death I had to deal with I think in general when it comes to life. Watching my uncle play this game I couldn't wrap my head around the idea of her being "gone forever". To my knowledge, all Cloud and the others had to do was gather the 7 dragon balls and wish her back... what about Mega Phoenix down.... shes gone.... I'm currently replaying the game since I didn't bond with the characters 120% when my uncle played. BUT REST ASSURED I WAS F*CKING INVESTED AND I WAS SAD.

 

Attack on Titan

Eren's Mother: Now I am fully aware that without Eren's mother's death, there does not exist tension, or driving force for Eren to join the recon corps. I GET IT, I GET IT. But..... when she's thanking that guy who saves Eren and Mikasa... and she's telling them to live... she ... she says ... while literally trying to stop herself..... she says......... "Don't leave me".....BROKE MY HEART. WHYYYYYYYYYY???   Knowing that she, in her final moments, had made the request to save her children without hesitation and yet was still afraid to die..... still wanted to be saved.. And that hurt me... that hurt me deep


Bleach (tie)

Coyote Starrk and Ichimaru Gin: Now most bleach fans probably want to save Ulquiorra. I want to save starrk (and literally as I was writing this I realized Gin died, but my mind refused to acknowledge it at first) and GIn.

I assume if you're reading this you've finished bleach so you know Starrk's backstory. For me when Lilynette died (or Starrk could no longer hear or feel her). I was a bit torn up for him. I really like his character and even though he was an enemy, he clearly did not want to fight, (even though he was ranked the strongest espada and is a complete bad ass!). Now I technically didn't see him die, so here is holding out hope he's still alive....though when he lost lily.... the feels

I think Gin is self-explanatory, but if you don't know, episodes b4 Gin's death we FINALLY get to see: him in real combat with his Zanpakuto, and his true reasons for joining the Soul Society/Aizen. Not only is he a badass, but he had a heart. Gin's persona is great and everytime he talks to Aizen or comments on just about anything its funny or amusing. And if that damn Hougoku wasn't ridiculous and complicated, GIN WOULD'VE KILLED AIZEN AND HE' BE THE HERO, AND... AND....... sigh....

 

Death Note

L : This one is just a personal want. I was shell-shocked when he died and, for the next 2 to 3 episodes, I was STILL alive and would come back. To no avail. L's character was so cool and intriguing that I was disappointed to see him "lose". A necessary evil to making a DAMN GOOD anime.

 

Naruto Shippuden

Itachi Uchiha : Obvious choice. Jiraiya was close, Azuma was up there since I'm a huge fan of Shikamaru, but when it comes down to it, Itachi is one of those characters that carry an anime. He isn't the only one in this case, since there are SOOOO MANY QUALITY characters in Naruto, but he is definitely at the forefront. The story behind Itachi's death is so tragic. The moment of his death left me speechless and confused, and I rewatched it again and again to be sure I saw what I saw. YEA YEA he's reanimated right now so it takes away from the feeling of longing to see the character again, but even as a reanimated ninja, he's proving he's one of the best badass characters the Naruto universe had to offer,

 

One Piece

Portgas D. Ace: I'm not ashamed to say this. I was invested... I WAS IN TEARS. I CAME CLOSE TO BALLING MY EYE OUT WHEN IT HAPPENDED. No. NOOO! NOT ACE! WHAT? AFTER EVERYTHING WE'VE DONE! I have watched alot (almost too much but I'm not there yet) of anime in my life, but no anime has actually made me cry the way ace's death made me cry. Luffy's reaction.... everything. AND THEN THEY SHOW YOU LUFFY AND ACE"S CHILDHOOD RIGHT AFTER!!???!?!?!?

......... Needless to say that was a VERY tough arc to get through, I still can't watch or listen to the Opening song of that arc without tearing up.... :(

Gotta admit that Ace is definitely ranked at or near the top for me, we never got to see what he was truly capable of, he was in the presence of crazy strong characters and commanded respect from all of them but if he didn't die then that would remove from Luffys story seeing as Ace would be the true heir to Rogers legacy.

 

Kamina from Gurren Lagan was another, he carried the anime so much more than the protagonist that his death was easily foreseeable. It may have been better to see Simon grow a little more into a badass under Kaminas influence, then he might have been a little more likable.

 

The only gaming deaths where i truly wanted the characters to live were Adams and Lugo from Spec Ops:The line, but that entire game is a mindf**k.

Kite from Hunter x Hunter because I felt like he was such an important character because he was ging student and he was killed off so early on in the chimera ant arc.

maes hughes from full metal brotherhood why because that guy is freaking awesome and dies at a bad point to me  i  know i should probably put a  name down but i can't think of her name so i'm just going to say the rich girl from max payne 3 cause you play majority of the game trying to save her and fail so it's just like man nothing can go right for max sorry more spoilers  and you let her brother i think die  just everything goes bad and max got knocked out just bad day

Whom would I save?

Dunno. Deaths in general serve a purpose in a story...and I usually don't care TAHT much.

 

I can name quite a few cool characters who dieed and I was saddened by it (Nicholas D. Wolfwood, Walter von Schenkopp, )...but it does kinda feel "right" for them.

 

However,m the oposite question - of which characters you'd want to see dead (or beaten to a pulp so bad they never return) - that's pretty much a given for any irritating or Mary Sue characters ...like Seiya, Ichigo, Luffy (yes Luffy. I hate his stupid grin and I find him boring) and so forth.

Kamina..hmm he was OK-ish,but he was not the original GAR. That would be Banjo Haran.

In general, I'd like to save any character I failed to save. If I wasn't able to save someone whether they're important to the story or just another teammate with a rifle, a bunch of times I'll reload my last save point and try again. But as for story related deaths...

Duncan and the king from Dragon age, SGT Johnson from halo, Squadmates lost in games like spec ops and the call of duties, and SGT Forge from Halo Wars.

Anime wise... Only one that comes to mind right off the bat is Sachi from SAO. 

I'm sure there are others I'd like to have been able to save, but those are all I can think of at the moment.

My first and most important is Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop. We don't know what really happens to him, if he dies from the fall, or if he somehow survives, but the show didn't and that pisses me off. I love this show and I still feel weak when thinking about it.

 

Lt. Hughes from FMA. He is voiced by the same guy who did Spike's voice. He was really funny, and gave a nice contrast to the seriousness of the drama with his comic relief.

You are the first person I've ever heard value ben or care that he died. I thought his death was very tragic, and even though we assume Kenny used that one bullet on him, I'd feel a thousand times worse if he didn't. That is assuming that's how you let ben die in your playthrough

*GASP*, to not care about Luffy cuz he's not the greatest main character and many other characters out shine him, that is one thing, but to hate him... I could never hate him. He's been through a lot :/

Rei (Fist of the North star) one of most bad ass Nanto Warriors of the star of Duty. I was really sad after Raoh gave him 3 painfull days to live.

Shuu (Fist of the North star) another Nanto Warrior who's gone way too soon. Damn you Souther.

Fudoh (Fist of the North star) come on, how many good pure hearted Nanto Warriors had to die by the Hand of Raoh

Yuza (Fist of the North star) and again. Another good Warrior down, killed by Raoh.

Gin (Bleach) at first i thought he is a bad guy but then he did it all for Matsumoto.

Alexander Anderson (Hellsing) why? He was a cool Killer from the vatican.
