Good for Beginners

I'm looking to get into strategy games because they seem like a lot of fun :) but I was wondering if anybody could recommend one that is fun and innovative without having to spend $2000 building a PC just to play it. I have a laptop that I use for essays and stuff so you can imagine it doesn't have the greatest capabilities, but being a student my budget simply doesn't allow me to have a fully functioning gaming PC.

So if anybody could recommend some good games without having to have all these qualities, I'd be grateful  :)

I haven't really played that many strategy games before, but I absolutely love age of empires (2 and Mythologies are the best imo). I have also heard from my brother that  some of the total war series are really good (not so sure if they have fixed the latest total war Rome 2 yet).

I will recommend Rome: Total War if you want a good strategy game, and medieval 2 total war. because they don´t need the best settings to be played because they are little old, but they are superb and i have hat tons of fun with them. But the age of empire franchise is also extremly good too, and  played them alot too. and if you like the Lord of The Rings movies, I will recommend Lord of The Rings Battle for Middel Earth 2 and its expansion pack. :)

Really depends on what you want, turn based or real time, historical, modern, sci fi, fantasy lol... I would recommend Civ 4 as a nice starter for 4x you can play a small map on fast rate in a few hours and learn the ropes.

I love strategy games but some can be very off putting because of micromanagement aspects in the game, for example Crusader kings II is a fantastic strategy game but it requires a lot of learning on a pretty steep curve before you can enjoy the game but once you are there the satisfaction of watching a long planned several game year strategy work out is brilliant. I agree with the suggestions of Civilisation V as a good start point although you will get Civ IV cheaper (in the Steam sale at Christmas for example) this will give you a good introduction to the concepts.

Like someone else said though really it depends what you are into whether that is Fantasy with Orcs and magic or sci fi with things with spaceships and other planets?

What kind of strategy games are you looking into starting? Real time, turn based, grand strategy?

I'd suggest Civ IV over V as V is a: more taxing on resources and b: I just don't like it... I don't mind playing Venice but combat is so unpleasant IMO (and mine alone) I was also annoyed that it took 3 releases before it got cultural victories O.O;;

Well op said for beginners so I would skip a lot of Paradox's catalogue lol.

If you want a really good space 4x turn based game I'd go with Masters of Orion 2

MoO 2 might be a bit back there in terms of age. It's still a good game, but its dated look might throw people off. Perhaps Galciv 2 would be a nice entryway, and then if they like those they go to the best of the best.

Civilization III will run on any modern machine. Like previously stated the original X-Com and Civilization IV and V are good. Some other good strategy games anyone can run include Starcraft (first one), early Command & Conquer games, Age of Empires (II specifically), Warcraft III, Worms (a lot of Worms stuff is on sale on Steam), and lastly the Jagged Alliance games.

My best suggestion would be the Heroes of Might and Magic series, and if you really want something that is fun, annoying and good for beginners at the same time then look no further than Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes. Extremely simple to get into, very fun at times to play, incredible source of frustration to play online because somehow people will manage to always get precisely the sort of fields they need to make sure that you are doomed from round 1.

EDIT: It's also available as a free demo on steam.

For easier games to get into I would suggest Kings Bounty, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Civilization 5. GOG has some great games like Age of Wonder (and is where you can find the Heroes of Might and Magic games). Maybe some of the older Total Wars games to see if you like them. Those would be a lot easier to get into then trying to play XCOM, Jagged Alliance, Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, etc right away.
