Getting into PC gaming- Help me build a rig!

6 posts in this topic

Friends! Since the practicality of PC gaming has become more and more evident (thanks to AJ and other PC advocates) I am looking to build a PC for myself. I am on the fence about purchasing a console when it just seems that building my own PC will alleviate some of the headaches of next gen console's and the politics of it all.

Rant over. But now I am left without a starting point.

Pretty much I'm looking to build a setup exclusively for gaming. Programs such as Office etc. will be reserved for my laptop. So that being said I am hoping to be able to put something together that is:

  • Powerful
  • Amazing Graphics
  • (Hopefully) Affordable

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

This reminds me of those kiddy questions - Which doesn't belong 1. Apple 2. Orange 3. Machine Gun. Sadly affordable won't be a part of the other two requisites you have listed. I just priced together a nice upgrade for my PC which includes Mobo, Processor, GPU and Memory (RAM) and those alone came out to nearly $800. I shopped around finding the best deals for what I was looking for and it wasn't top of the line upgrades.

Since you're going from scratch it will cost even more. Would help to know what your budget is.

It depends on the games that you play. You can make a pretty great tower for games like Fallout 3 with an $800 budget.

Oh of course, keep in mind that is an older game though and not really graphics heavy. $800 can barely land you low-medium settings for a new PC for more recent games.

It cost me around $1,200 for my build (Inc. a 24' monitor & mouse/pad), the parts were also sourced in Aus, so i'm certain it would be cheaper in the US of A.

My build:

MotherBoard: Gigabyte GA-H77M-D3H

Graphics Card: ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU II OC 2GB

Power-supply: Antec High Current Gamer 520W Modular HCG-520M

Processor: Intel Core I5 3470

HD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001

RAM: Corsair CMP8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3

SSD: SanDisk Extreme Solid State Drive 120GB

Optical Drive: LG GH24NS95 24x SATA DVD-RW Drive OEM

Case: Thermaltake Black Commander MS-II Mid Tower Case

Cooling: Nexus Real Silent 120mm Case Fan

Nothing too fancy, but I'm able to play BF4 pretty much max'd out, same with a lot of other games.

Just repriced if i went from the GTX 770 to GTX 670, would cost me under $600. The GPU is the heavy hitter.
