Digital DL Costs

5 posts in this topic

The PlayStation 4 is about to launch in Europe, and Sony has revealed the prices for digital game downloads for the UK. And prices are quite high, to be honest. While that has always been the case with games in the UK, EA is really pushing it for digital downloads: to download an EA game (like Battlefield 4 and FIFA 14) will cost £63 Pounds, which translates into over $000 USD. Per game.

Of course, these prices include the 20% VAT (Value Added Tax) in the UK, but even without the VAT, the game prices are over $80 per game. And that's for digital downloads, which don't include packaging costs like a physical copy does. Luckily, not all games retail for $63 -- Activision and Sony use a more common £55 price tag (about $90 here in the US).

Wasn't the whole point of digital downloads that they are not only easier to get, but cheaper as well? Even worse, digital downloads -- on the PlayStation 4 and elsewhere -- cannot be traded in for cash or other games.

EA's £63 prce tag is ven more ridiculous when you compare it to regular retail prices: FIFA 14, Battlefield 4 et al. retail for just £47 at Amazon.co.uk as regular boxed versions.

Here's the complete lineup and price tags (and download sizes) of all PS4 games available on the PlayStation Store at launch:

Killzone Shadow Fall: 38.2GB £52.99

Call of Duty: Ghosts: 31.8GB £54.99

FIFA 14: 9.9GB £62.99

Battlefield 4: 36.4GB £62.99

Need for Speed Rivals 16GB £62.99

Knack 34.8GB £52.99

Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag: 21.7GB £57.99

Resogun: 460MB £12.79 (Free with PS+)

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: 6.4GB £52.99

NBA Live 14: 9.3GB £62.99

Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition: 21.7GB £52.99

Just Dance 2014:  22GB £42.99

Contrast: 2.3GB £12.79 (Free with PS+)

Super Motherload: 393MB £11.99

Trine 2: Complete Story: 2.6GB £14.49

Putty Squad: 818MB £13.99

Madden NFL 25: 13.1GB £62.99

Angry Birds Star Wars: 1.5GB £32.99

Warframe 4.1GB Free

There is some cost to having a digital delivery service and disks are fairly cheap to mass produce. Or course there also is the cost of delivering the disks to the stores so it should be cheaper for the publisher, however, why would they lower prices when they could make more money on the same price. It sucks, but the companies (in their minds) aren't doing wrong because they aren't changing anything.

All in all it is unfortunate 99% of games won't be cheaper even though it will be cheaper to publish.

Let's just hope more money is going to the devs so they can make great games.

New gen consoles will never have there inital games cheap (or as some would say reasonable) due to developing code for a new system and so on..

Both xboxonehellofamess and ps4 (guess which im a fan of) have freebie games if you go premium though so there is some niceness, chances are there may be an odd sale down the line but if theres a game cheaper in store or online other than direct download on the console ill go get it and not moan about it, i dont mind the 10 minute walk or 3 day wait for a delivery. Would be nice though if i could stop seeing games released for £60 when there franchise games though, there basically carbon copies with better graphics (debatable) and story / content then the preivous incarnation) so its not like a whole lot goes in in new idea development. Allways seems like corporate laughs when folk buy those games..

(fifa 2013, fifa 2013 febuary, fifa 2013 dlc new cola advertising boards... you silly franchise fans would buy it though wouldnt you :) )

That really is ridiculous! Why would the charge so much more for a digital download which you can't even sell once your done with the game...

If I buy the boxed version I can at least still sell it in a years time and get some of my money back! :/

Do you guys think that there will at least be some steam-like sales where you can get cheap downloads from time to time?

I never understood why Digital products years after being released still sell for the brand new ticket price, if the physical copy loses value over time for a factory sealed game then why not the digital versions?

One of the Transformer games on steam still goes for around 60 bucks I believe, but the console product maybe around $20?

its all bs bs bs :-p
