131 Rapid-Fire Questions About The Outer Worlds

    Quote

With Game Informer's new cover story on Obsidian's The Outer Worlds, we're diving in deep and explaining everything we learned about the upcoming RPG. While visiting the studio, Joe Juba sat down with co-directors Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky and asked them 131 rapid-fire questions about The Outer Worlds' gameplay, companions, scope, and (since they created the original two games) the origins of Fallout. Check out the video above to watch the most informative interview you'll ever see about The Outer Worlds... and chocolate.

In this excerpt from The Game Informer Show, Ben Hanson, Joe Juba, and Matt Miller share new details on Obsidian's upcoming RPG The Outer Worlds based on Game Informer's new cover story.

Will The Outer Worlds Live Up To Fan Expectations?

    Quote

With Game Informer's new cover story on Obsidian's The Outer Worlds, we're diving in deep and explaining what you can expect from the upcoming RPG. Ever since the announcement, the studio has been closely watching the reaction online and want to ensure fan expectations are in line with the game they plan on shipping. We sat down with co-directors Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky to talk about expectations surrounding the game's scope and length, as well as some misconceptions they see online. Watch the video interview above and let us know what you think in the comments below. To learn what we thought of The Outer Worlds, subscribe to or watch the latest episode of The Game Informer Show podcast.

New Combat Gameplay And Details For The Outer Worlds

    Quote

In this exclusive Game Informer video, The Outer Worlds' co-director Tim Cain and lead designer Charles Staples show off new gameplay and talk about designing a satisfying RPG combat experience (inspired by Fallout: New Vegas) for Obsidian's next game.

Obsidian Isn't Happy With Fans Bashing Bethesda And Fallout 76

    Quote

Urquhart says he's surprised that some people assume the team at Obsidian would know back in 2015 when they started working on The Outer Worlds that the game's announcement would line up with a negative reaction toward Bethesda's Fallout 76 at the end of 2018. "People even said things about our trailer: 'Oh man, just slamming it home to Bethesda!' because we said the original creators of Fallout and makers of Fallout: New Vegas. We have storyboards from July that said that," he says. "I have no ill will for Bethesda, I love playing Fallout games... We’re not fighting for the same dollars."

A free One Finger Death Punch 2 demo releases Monday, and it's a blast

    Quote

A game of reflexes and determining whether things are on the left or right, One Finger Death Punch is a classic in low-fidelity entertainment: the earlier, more frantic arcade counterpart to Nidhogg's methodical killing blows. Soon, One Finger Death Punch 2 will bring it all back—including the announcer's bad Pat Morita impression, unfortunately—and after playing the demo that releases next week, I'm convinced it won't disappoint friends of the original.

Total War: THREE KINGDOMS Warlord Legends – Dong Zhuo

    Quote

We’ve already revealed the 11 starting warlords, but now we’re showing you the unlockable 12th legendary warlord who we’ve been keeping under our hats until now.

Unlike the other warlords, this outcome is dictated by not one but a chain of dilemmas and events, each of which depends on the selected game mode.

In Romance Mode, Dong Zhuo’s dilemma chain focuses around Diaochan, the beautiful serving girl who turned Dong Zhu and Lü Bu against each other with their jealousy (which eventually led to Dong Zhuo’s death). As Dong Zhuo, you can influence these events by giving up on Diaochan in order to gain Lü Bu’s approval – or confirming his affection by marrying her, thus leading to a more difficult outcome.

In Classic Mode, this dilemma chain is based around personal differences between Dong Zhuo and Lü Bu, as well as the political scheming of Wang Yun.

Total War: Three Kingdoms release date has been delayed

    Quote

Total War: Three Kingdoms has had its release date pushed back and will no longer be out on March 7. Instead, we can expect to see the game released on May 23.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice system requirements are out

    Quote

Ahead of the game's March 22 release, From Software and Activision have released the minimum and recommended system requirements for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the Sengoku period action game which will shear off most of the RPG trappings of the Souls series.

    Quote

Warhammer: Chaosbane, the Warhammer franchise’s class-based Diablo-esque crawler, has been given a June 4 launch date for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. The game will also see two closed betas sometime in March and April.

Cthulhu goes post-apocalyptic in Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones

    5ai2KO9.jpg

    Quote

In most eldritch horror fiction, the heroes’ goal is to prevent the end of the world. In Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, an isometric tactical RPG, the end of the world has already happened.

IGF nominated puzzle game Ethereal sets March release date

    Quote

Pretty puzzle game Ethereal will be wiggling its way into stores on the 7th of March. The wordless game follows an indistinct blob through many colourful, chilled out levels, and it’s up for a 2019 Independent Games Festival award for excellence in audio.

Devil May Cry 5 takes Resident Evil 2’s gore and smacks it with style

    Quote

Grotesque, ghoulish creatures crawl from pustulating fleshy geysers, exemplifying Capcom’s gruesomely indulgent horror game MO. But these aren’t the mean streets of Raccoon City. No, this is Red Grave City – a beautiful maze of grand streets fractured by hordes of invading demons as visceral as the stomach-churning gore in the latest Resident Evil 2 remake.

Praey For The Gods' Developers Talk Shadow Of The Colossus And Breath Of The Wild Inspirations

    aLI8p6H.jpg

    Quote

Praey for the Gods has been in development in some form since 2014. The game is heavily inspired by Shadow of the Colossus and found success on Kickstarter when it earned $500,000 in pledges with a $300,000 goal. The game entered early access on January 31, which has offered a fairly substantial look at the full experience. After spending some time with the game and felling a few of its "gods," we reached out to creative director Brian Parnell to ask a few questions about the game's inspirations and its future.

New Gameplay Today – Ape Out

    Quote

Miller joins Leo in the NGT labs to break down the psychadelic jazz album video game Ape Out from Gabe Cuzzillo and published by Devolver Digital.

Redo! sneaks into the dusty tunnels of early access

    Quote

Ever since playing an early prototype, I’ve been looking forward to today’s launch of Redo!. It’s an aggressively bleak metroidvania about a lone woman attempting to survive and maybe even find another human after an apocalyptic robot rebellion. Combat is panicky, weapons feel insufficient, and the machines themselves are strange, twisted and exceptionally deadly. The early access launch is effectively complete, with solo developer Robson Paiva only planning on adding a hard mode and tuning balance between now and launch. See it in motion in the trailer below.

The Textorcist teaches combat typing skills in a pre-launch demo

    Quote

I consider myself a decent typist, and better yet at dodging bullets in shmups. Today’s demo for The Textorcist: The Story of Ray Bibbia taught me a painful lesson: I am ill-equipped to do both at once. Due out on this week on February 14th, players control exorcist-for-hire Ray Bibbia with the arrow keys, dodging bullets as you would in any bullet hell shmup. Unlike other shooters, to fire back you need to type reams of scripture one-handed, splitting attention and motor control multiple ways. It’s intense, but fun. Give it a try here on Steam, and check out the launch trailer below.

Monster Hunter And The Witcher Are The Perfect Combination

    YDQfX45.jpg

    Quote

There’s a lot of detail in this crossover event. You don’t just control Geralt and fight some monsters. You also search for clues and talk with characters in a dialogue style entirely lifted from The Witcher 3. These moments are some of the best in the entire quest. Monster Hunter: World doesn’t really give its characters time to shine and rarely even gives them names. Watching Geralt interact with some of the item givers and researchers that I’ve come to rely on during my hundreds of hours of Monster Hunter: World is a welcome chance for them to receive genuine characterization. It’s even better if you play with English language settings. Doug Cockle, who voices Geralt in the Witcher games, returns with his signature mixture of world-weariness and snark.

Rainbow Six Siege’s next map is Outback – it’s got a nuclear convoy and stuffed sharks

    Quote

Rainbow Six Siege’s next season is called Burnt Horizon, and as all those weeks of leaks suggested, it’s set in Australia. Ubisoft has just provided a close look at the season’s new map, which appropriately titled Outback. Set along a rural Australian highway, the map features a roadside service stop that’s now home to a crashed nuclear convoy.

Battlefield 5 did not meet EA's sales expectations

    NatxkS2.jpg

    Quote

EA did post an increase in both revenue and profit, though. The net income for the third financial quarter was $262 million, with revenue amounting to $1.29 billion. During the same three month period last year, revenue was $1.16 billion. Net bookings, however, fell. These take into account commitments like annual subscriptions, and EA reported a drop from $1.97 billion to $1.61 billion.

Apex Legends had over 2.5 million players in its first day

    Quote

Despite only being out for a couple of days, EA's counting Apex Legends as a success. In a conference call on Tuesday, the publisher shared some of the results of the launch with investors, and it certainly sounds like it's off to a very strong start.

EA’s stock tanked this week – Apex Legends brought it back and then some

    Quote

EA noted disappointing financials in this week’s third-quarter earnings report, due in part to disappointing sales from Battlefield V. In the wake of that news, the company’s stock dropped over 14%. But since Wednesday’s low, the stock has risen 16% – back to its original position and a little bit past that.

Capcom said Hideaki Itsuno could make Dragon’s Dogma 2, but he chose to make DMC5 first

    2TNTFPB.jpg

    Quote

“So, when the discussion came up for Devil May Cry 5, I went to Kenzo [Kenzo Tsujimoto, Capcom founder] and I said… look, I want to make either Devil May Cry 5 or Dragon’s Dogma 2 next,” Itsuno told VG247 through a translator as part of a Devil May Cry 5 media tour. “He said ‘okay, do whatever you want. Do whichever one you want.’ So I thought, alright, y’know what… let’s do DMC5. So we did that.”

Nintendo Exec Says 'A Very High Number' Of Its Designers Are Women

    wyCsREk.png

    Quote

There are also many females actively involved in development. The director of the Animal Crossing series is a woman, and there are many female designers working actively. When I had chances to look at other development companies in Europe and the US, they give the impression that they’re overwhelmingly male-dominated. Compared to companies like that, Nintendo has a lot of female developers energetically working.

    OpAp5Q4.jpg

    Quote

Escapist has since removed the teaser, and Victor Lucas has offered an apology over the misleading teaser. Lucas called the teaser a “small part of the conversation we had at Riot.” Lucas and Escapist still plan to release Recon. Riot Games told Dot Esports that Lucas’ interview mainly focused on their “partnership with Marvel and the team behind that partnership.”

Shawn Layden On PlayStation And The Future

    XvHYtTr.jpg

    Quote

On a rainy late afternoon in San Mateo, CA, Game Informer sat down with Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios chairman, Shawn Layden. Dressed sharply and with a charming grin, he made a telling observation just before our interview. The chairs were beautiful, but just didn’t quite fit his stature, and he opted for the conference table for us to chat.

Overwatch League's Once-Dominant Team Opens Up About Their Season One Failings

    lXaxNm1.png

    Quote

New York Excelsior’s first season in the Overwatch League ended with more questions than answers, most of them boiling down to some variation on “What happened?” The answer to that question depends on who you talk to. Two members chalk it up to the choppy waters of a shifting meta, but to hear another tell it, sandbagging played a role, too.

    The Serenity Prayer and Rakuen

    6EK0QUt.jpg

    Quote

Rakuen is about accepting the things we cannot change, while asserting that our little actions make a difference. By this I mean we should take time to grieve when we fail, but also know that our actions aren’t futile in the face of a cruel, uncaring world. We can care, and we can act.

    Critical Compilation BIOSHOCK: INFINITE

    Quote

There is, quite possibly, no game in the modern games criticism sphere that has inspired as many words as Irrational Games’ 2013 Bioshock: Infinite.

It followed in the lineage of a game that was nearly universally adored (2007’s Bioshock) which spawned a sequel that had its own storied history of acclaim (2010’s Bioshock 2) and traced its development back to one of the giants of the 1990s “immersive sims”, System Shock. Infinite, in every way, was poised to take the throne of an entire genre, whether or not it deserved it.

“It’s important to show that there’s a vulnerability to the male ego” – an interview with Red Dead Redemption 2’s Roger Clark

    6zr2kru.png

    Quote

Clark consumed as much reference material as he could, to the point where he began to recognise specific shots created as an homage to some of the most popular films in the genre. You may have caught Rockstar’s version of the iconic scene from The Assassination of Jesse James yourself, where a camera pans along with a train, lighting up bandits in the woodline before cutting to a silhouetted figure blocking the tracks. But outside of the prescribed reference material, Clark also had his own personal idea of what he wanted Arthur Morgan to represent.

Breath Of The Wild Speedrunning Has Changed A Lot In Two Years

    Quote

Yesterday, speedrunner sketodara01417 completed a speedrun for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in slightly over half an hour. As someone who used to casually speedrun the game, I was awestruck at how much things have changed. New glitches and massively different movement techniques have radically altered the game into something breathtaking to watch.

Respawn tried “approximately a bojillian” ways to get Titans into Apex Legends

    Quote

Apex Legends does not have Titans, or the wall-running and double-jumping mobility options that you’d expect from a Titanfall game – after all, there’s a reason it doesn’t say Titanfall in the title. But that doesn’t mean developer Respawn didn’t try to get the iconic bits of the series into Apex Legends. It just turns out that they all break a competitive battle royale.

Apex Legends is great because you don’t have to talk to anyone

Losing my lust for hunting, thanks to The Bear

    Bn4PCkb.png

    Quote

Recently, I watched a rather delightful film called The Bear. I'd not heard of it before until a friend told me how it was a childhood favourite of his. (His film taste is usually worth listening to.) Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud of Seven Years in Tibet and The Name of the Rose fame, The Bear isn't like most other animal-themed films. It's far more nuanced than it first appears to be. A live action tale (with a mixture of animatronic bears and real ones), it follows the story of an orphaned bear cub in late 19th century British Columbia, as he tries to survive, pitting himself against nature and some rather determined hunters.

After events like the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the whistleblowing of Edward Snowden, and the impending digital takeover of Facebook and Google, it’s slowly becoming clear that maybe we ought to be more aware of our personal data and privacy – how much we willingly share, and who we share it with. Even the most recent meme sensation, the ‘ten year challenge’, is starting to look like the ideal data harvesting tool for a face recognition algorithm Facebook are working on.

Fortnite's Appropriation Issue Isn't About Copyright Law, It's About Ethics

    Fr8xt6b.jpg

    Quote

At a recent wedding, after the main course is taken away and the desserts come out, the least weighed-down guests slowly make our way to the dance floor. All of a sudden, a group of kids dash out and immediately begin performing Blocboy JB’s Shoot dance, a goofy, energetic strut made famous in the eponymously named music video. As the oldest one kicks his limbs out in the signature style of the dance, he shouts “Fortnite!” to the confused adults looking on.

To his understanding, he is merely acting out the “Hype,” an iconic and highly prized Fortnite Emote. Reaching the dance’s true terminus would take him to the streets of Memphis, Tennessee; to the assembled young men, as they are captured in the song’s video, leaning on the trunks of cars, throwing dice, holding guns, laughing and dancing with abandon. But for him, and many others, the cultural connotations of the moves he is making begin and end within Fortnite’s shimmering, enclosing walls.

Former Uncharted Director Amy Hennig Talks About Life After Star Wars, Decries Gaming Elitism

    q62bMyv.jpg

    Quote

Today at DICE Summit 2019, former Uncharted writer and director Amy Hennig and Double Fine founder Tim Schafer hosted an on-stage conversation. Their talk bounced from joking about the cocaine-filled early 90s-era of EA ("I wasn't indulging in any of it," says Hennig) and Hennig even being rejected from LucasArts when Schafer was at the studio in 1989. The conversation took a turn when the topic twisted to Hennig's future, which has been a hot topic of discussion since the dissolution of Visceral Games and its Star Wars project she was creatively directing.

The impossible architecture of video games

    nU0dWQe.jpg

    Quote

There is a saying in architecture that no building is unbuildable, only unbuilt. Structures may be impossible in the here and now, but have the potential to exist given enough time or technological development: a futuristic cityscape, a spacefaring megastructure, the ruins of an alien civilisation. However, there are also buildings that defy the physical laws of space. It is not an issue that they could not exist, but that they should not. Their forms bend and warp in unthinkable ways; dream-like structures that push spatial logic to its breaking point.

Red Dead Redemption 2 can be a struggle for players with poor eyesight

    Quote

I am legally blind due to my albinism, so gaming has always come with a bit of extra difficulty. It’s actually harder to see many things in games now that everything runs at higher resolutions and fine details are being added into a game’s design. I always find ways to use the available systems to fix the settings and make it through the missions, but Red Dead Redemption 2 has been my toughest challenge to date.

Why Nostalgia For Video Games Is Uniquely Powerful

    Cluyvp8.png

    Quote

This year, Netflix will premiere the third season of its hit documentary series The Toys That Made Us. This series of 45-minute deep dives into the toys we’re most nostalgic for has covered He-Man, Barbie, Hello Kitty, and more. But video games have been noticeably absent from any of the show’s episodes thus far. That’s a peculiar omission, since research has demonstrated that video game nostalgia is the most powerful nostalgia of all.

How a five-year game of Civilization 5 became a meaningful part of my personal history

    y2nxCm3.jpg

    Quote

For the first 5000 years, nothing much happened. We must have embarked on our epic enterprise sometime in late 2013, though neither of us suspected we were about to spend the next five years embroiled in a seemingly never-ending coop hot-seat game of Civilization 5. If we had, we'd probably have played something else instead. It was folly, but by the time we realised, it was too late; we had become thoroughly invested, the game had taken on a life of its own, and there was nothing else but to see it to its (eventual) end. On and off, we kept chipping away at our task, sometimes meeting every few weeks for a couple of hours, sometimes once every couple of months. But soon our time with the game had to be measured not in months, but in years, and our game of Civilization had become a sort of parallel history to our personal lives.

Making Games Better for Players with Cognitive Disabilities | Designing for Disability

    Quote

Video games are for everyone. But those with disabilities can be left out if developers don’t consider their needs.

In this series of videos, I’ll be sharing guidelines and best practices for making games more accessible to a wide range of disabilities. This time, I’m looking at design choices and menu options that will affect those who have cognitive disabilities.

    The History of Metro 2033

    Quote

It’s not an exaggeration to claim that video games have a penchant for life in post-apocalyptic America. From the ghastly realism of The Last of Us, to the tongue-in-cheek absurdity of Rage, the industry is filled to the brim with experiences that explore what happens to the land of the free after social order collapses. In addition, games like Frostpunk, Mad Max, and a few others have featured memorable post-apocalyptic scenarios in the Anglosphere. Yet when it comes to the rest of the globe, the pickings are often slim.
