Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Gunfight is the kind of game mode I didn’t know I wanted until I sat down and played it. The rules are simple: two teams with two players each attempt to wipe each other out to win a round, first team to claim six rounds wins the match. If nobody is killed within 40 seconds a neutral flag spawns, forcing both teams into the centre of the map.

Ion Maiden becomes Ion Fury and readies for launch next month

    Quote

The lawyer-dodging title change may be a little on the boring side, but Ion Fury (formerly Ion Maiden) is looking anything but. As well as confining their new title, Voidpoint and 3D Realms have confirmed that their old-school shooter, built on the time-worn foundations of Duke Nukem 3D, will launch on August 15th. Having previously played the early access pseudo-demo, I’m very excited for this one, as it’s essentially the successor that Duke Nukem 3D never got. They’ve even got the voice of Duke, Jon St. John, to voice the villain. Below, a gib-splattered new trailer.

Stories happen all across the world, and time moves on, so you have to decide what to see and do while trying to balance what’s left of your life.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses - Welcome to the Blue Lion House - Nintendo Switch

Fire Emblem Three Houses interview: Intelligent Systems & Nintendo talk bringing the beloved strategy RPG series to Switch

    Quote

In truth it's not from Harry Potter, or Persona, or anything like that - it actually links back to an older Fire Emblem. Back a long time ago, we developed a game for the Super Famicom called Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. When you look at the story, the three characters were from a monastery - they were friends, they worked together - and then they have to go to battle against each other. That's almost the same plot as that older game, if you look at that. So we had the image of this old game in mind before - that's maybe our most significant influence on this project.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses Will Test Your Heart And Your Mettle

    Quote

Fire Emblem: Three Houses perfectly balances tactics-based combat with an anime high school simulator. I’m fifteen hours in, and I can already tell it is going to break my heart.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses Shows Off Beast Battles, Tournaments, And Confirms Same-Sex Relationships

    Quote

    Quote

Cyberpunk 2077's Night City is full of people for you to beat up, including gang members, cops and corporate douchebags—there are limits, though, so you won't be brawling with everyone. Children, for instance, will be protected from your murderous rages, along with story-important NPCs.

Neo Cab Takes On Uber & Lyft's Gig Economies Via Near Future Sci-Fi

    guIfbCa.png

    Quote

The gig economy is beginning to define America’s employment system. Uber and Lyft (and others) changed the way people work. There’s the positive - work when you want for as long as you want - and negatives - minimal pay and no benefits. Eventually, that could all be automated. That’s the future Chance Agency's Neo Cab explores.

Ubisoft returns to requesting fan labour for Watch Dogs Legion

    Quote

Those pieces will still exist within HitRecord, and their creators might have the opportunity to make money from them later. But that’s still a lot of work to put in with no guarantee at reward. It seems the direct definition of “speculative,” even if Joseph Gordon-Levitt disagrees. Polygon’s Jeff Ramos wrote a good breakdown of the creative community’s concerns last year.

    Quote

Ubisoft has once again partnered with HitRecord to solicit assets for an upcoming game and, as with last time around, the arrangement is drawing criticism from the game development community.

Gibbous is a Lovecraft horror-adventure in the style of a classic Disney film

    Quote

We said last year that we're tired of Lovecraft. Sure, the man told some singularly horrific tales, but there's more to the genre than tentacles, the gaping maw of madness, and virulent racism. We want something different! Gibbous is kind of a compromise in that regard: It's a Cthulhu mythos-inspired tale of terror done in the style of an animated Disney film, complete with a talking cat.

The First 20 Minutes Of The Surge 2 | Surge 2 Gameplay (PC)

    Quote

The Surge 2 opening is already much better than the first game, introducing it’s limb-chopping combat and upgrade system in a really smooth way. In this The Surge 2 PC gameplay, also look out for a couple of new Surge 2 boss fights, as we take on a prison warden in order to get a drone of our own. You also see a glimpse of The Surge 2 character creation, but we didn;t dwell on it in order to get to the action. We’ll be going into all this in more detail in next week’s impressions videos - it won’t be The Surge 2 review, of course, as we only played the first four hours. But we got a good idea of what to expect from that. The video is only in 1080p - we did play Surge 2 PC, but were not able to tinker with visual setting just yet. We will need to get the code in our hands before testing the tech more thoroughly.

We lost an open-world Griftlands and gained a card game

    OBCB6LR.jpg

    Quote

My first mistake is eating the pickled talons. My second mistake is getting drunk. Griftlands is the kind of RPG where every action has consequences. But it's also a card game, so the consequence of being drunk is having a 'slurred speech' card in my negotiation deck and a 'tipsy' card in my battle deck.

Cult Horror Game Devotion Will Not Be Re-Released After Joke About Chinese President

    Quote

Taiwanese game developer Red Candle Games has issued a new statement on the status of its horror game, Devotion, which was pulled from Steam in February over a Winnie the -Pooh joke. And it appears the developers will not be re-releasing the game.

China forced one horror game publisher to close, but the whole region felt it

    Quote

Much like the phantoms that materialise and disappear within the dusky corridors of Devotion, the game itself felt like an apparition. Launched in February, the solid Taiwanese horror game vanished from Steam just weeks afterwards, due to the discovery of in-game talismans that contain derisive references to China’s President, Xi Jinping. Facing a firestorm of criticism, its studio, Red Candle Games, hurriedly hunkered down, announcing that it was putting the game through rounds of quality checks before releasing it again. But it’s now four months later, and the game still hasn’t been restored on Steam. But Red Candle aren’t the only studio that has to wrestle with China’s strict censorship.

Total War: Three Kingdoms rides again in August with Eight Princes

    Quote

Apparently conquering ancient China once isn’t enough for some of you. Fortunately, those still hungry for conflict in Total War: Three Kingdoms only have a few weeks to wait until its first big DLC. Due on August 8th, the Eight Princes chapter pack adds a new campaign continuing some years after the events of the main story, and resumes the war-totalling from the year 291 CE. Unsurprisingly, given the title, Creative Assembly are giving us eight power-hungry princes to play with, and a land once again needing unifying. See the very dramatic debut trailer below.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is an ambitious journey through the heartland of American history that unfortunately failed to live up to those ambitions, and is best remembered these days for being a "commercial disaster." Steam can now “magically generate a show about the latest and greatest games”

    FEPIsZ3.jpg

    Quote

There are too many Steam games for anyone to keep track of, including Valve, and the company has spent the past few years working on ways to offload the curation and discovery process to a mysterious set of algorithms. Valve now plans to get its store experiments into players’ hand much sooner – so you can now try out another new set of features as we get closer to the Steam Library redesign.

Earlier today, the Kickstarter for RAW – a ‘sandbox MMORP’ title built in the style of GTA Online – was suspended, as backers received an email from Kickstarter saying that pledges will be cancelled. The project had already met its funding goal, but faced plenty of criticism as fans, critics, and streamers suggested that it was far too ambitious to come to life on its modest budget – and it seems Kickstarter itself feels the same way.

Viral and Memorable Mistranslations of Japanese Game News

    Quote

Lots of game news, announcements, and details come out of Japan on a daily basis, but the language barrier means that only a portion of it ever leaves Japan. So whenever an interesting tidbit of information does get translated, it can spread very quickly online – regardless of translation quality or accuracy.

This viral mistranslation phenomenon has been around for as long as I can remember, but there have been a few big game-related examples during the past month or two. So I thought it’d be helpful to list these instances, along with some other, simpler examples of overeager fan mistranslations from the past 20 years.

Then you make a dish with no cumin whatsoever that’s just a throwback to your older, cumin-free stuff? That’s Final Fantasy IX.

How To Get Into Final Fantasy XIV In 2019

    3xzTYJC.jpg

    Quote

As Final Fantasy XIV’s new expansion “Shadowbringers” hits, I’ve seen a lot of curiosity from co-workers and friends about how to get started with the game. With hours and hours of content, tons of jobs to choose from, and multiple places to hop in, it can seem daunting, but it’s still well worth the time. Here’s some advice for curious adventurers eager to start their adventures.

The End of Final Fantasy XIV's 'Shadowbringers' Expansion Is The Emotional Spectacle I've Been Waiting For

    Quote

It’s hard for any story to end well, and even harder when it’s set in the constantly changing world of an MMORPG. Lengthy questlines that require years’ worth of player investment are hard to sell. Final Fantasy XIV’s latest expansion, ‘Shadowbringers,’ makes it work with an emotionally charged climax that helps create one of the franchise’s hardest-hitting finales.

    “Real Justice,” by Reid McCarter

    azdpQLH.jpg

    Quote

This scene is key to what Judgment wants to communicate: That real justice is rarely found within the legal system or at the hands of governmental processes designed and enacted by the self-interested, often venal people who hold the reins of society. The player’s cast as Takayuki Yagami, a former hotshot defence lawyer who left the field to become a detective after a former client he successfully represented was arrested for murder soon after release. Yagami, plagued by self-doubt over his role in defending an apparent serial murderer, is professionally disgraced and near bankrupt when Judgment begins, but, in spite of his turmoil, he spends the entire game always trying to do what’s right. Like Kazuma Kiryu, protagonist of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s related Yakuza series, he’s a character who travels in circles filled with unsavory people—mobsters, crooked cops—who end up being no less morally compromised than the local officialdom of lawyers, businessmen, and government ministers.

    d5iuuBc.jpg

    Quote

Depending on your viewpoint and sympathy for the team behind Mordhau, developers and community managers behind the game have come across as either unprepared or unwilling to tackle the rising tide of bigoted behavior. But how did we get here? What about Mordhau makes it fodder for this vitriolic of a response from its playerbase? The answer lies in its setting: The Middle Ages are a period that people think they know well, but the popular imagination has been informed by the context in which the field of medieval studies emerged.
