Even if steam was gone tomorrow user reviews, feedback and critique wouldn't just disappear along with it. There's allways metacritic, youtube, fourms and and so on. Besides, relying solely on steam user reviews is not something I'd recommended doing anyway.

I definitely feel steam is being left behind by game companies for many reasons...I'm not worried about steam fading to the background, what worries me is when you go into steam you see all the honest hard cold reviews and you can judge a game by it's reviews, if companies go to third party sites with no reviewing by members of the site...What do we have now? The only way we could know if a game was bad was if we bought it and critique it. I definitely see video gaming becoming a shady practice...thank god for people like joe!

I'll admit I joined steam and by the same extent "modern" PC gaming late in the game.  However on the current experience of my previous PC, the current Laptop I'm using and the undergoing high end custom watercooled PC that I am currently building I'm a little worried about PC gaming and on Steam.

Twas once the case not so long ago that nearly all games could be bought through Steam....... but no more......

EA games have now to go through Origin........  (Well consider EA as a rather low benchmark here)
Ubisoft games (at least some) now have to go through Uplay.  (of which every complaint you hear is 4 years out of date, when I was offline for a month Uplay was the only client that worked!)
Activision don't have an exclusive client and don't need one!  In an ingenious move they now publish though......
.......Blizzard THE company to go to when you don't want the fans to blame you for anything!  Not even when you release a greedy ass, time limited loot crate, RNG based, fee to play gambling simulator!

Hell I just got a code for Quake Champions but had to make not one but two new accounts to claim it!  One from AMD for the code (since I bought a CPU from them) and then from Bethesda.net to actually download the client and play the fucking game!

Let's face it, it's only a matter of time before the likes of Square Enix and WB follow suit here.  All the games from these publishers will be exclusive to their own clients before to long.  Steam is doomed with the except of it's own and inde productions.

I'm sorry If I was a little ranting and sarcastic here, but this has been bothering me for a while.  Steam is not a godsend, never was and publishers are taking notes from Blizzards book and realising they can make more money without it.

Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite Review – Written by Jose Vega

Purchased product for the sake of review.

Marvel & Capcom… they are two different companies that have one thing in common: a franchise where many of their franchise’s best duke it out against each other. In 2011, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was released. Though it had a pretty positive reception, it wasn’t enough and the series would enter hibernation. Marvel was under the grip of Disney and before long, Disney would get involved making games of their own, only to call it quits after Disney Infinity bit the dust. Five years later, it was announced that Marvel and Capcom would be back at it again with a new entry into the Versus series. The game in question was Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. Now that it has been released, does this game hold up to the hype?

The plot for Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite involves Ultron Sigma using the Reality and Space Stones to merge the worlds of Marvel and Capcom together. This creates a world where he is ruler but a legion of heroes from both Marvel and Capcom worlds unite to not only defeat Ultron Sigma but also find a way to undo and restore their respective worlds.

Many previous entries didn’t have much of a plot but this is the first time in the series where the plot takes precedence. Sadly I feel that it isn’t as interesting. Capcom had hyped the game’s story as being the main focal point. All it did sadly was only damage the overall presentation, especially when the demo was released a few months back. Compared to the final version it isn’t as much helpful and though it did improve when it came to the character models, having something that wasn’t as good in the beginning only serves to hurt the game, not help it. If anyone likes the story, more power to them. However I believe that a story had to be made in response to Netherealm’s games like Mortal Kombat and Injustice having story modes that provide a lot.

Gameplay has always been the Versus series’ strong point and this is no exception. Going back to basics, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite is a 2-on-2 fighting game where you choose two characters and then duke it out either with the computer or online against other players. It also is a 4-button fighter with 2 punches & 2 kicks respectively, similar to Marvel vs. Capcom 2. One noticeable feature is the Infinity Stones, brought back from Marvel Super Heroes. They provide a nifty addition by adding an advantage that can change how your team handles the battlefield. By pressing either the left or both shoulder buttons, you can activate an Infinity Surge for a quick effect or go full throttle with an Infinity Storm after filling up your Infinite meter. This adds a lot of variety to the game, as each of the six Infinity Stones offers different effects. You have a choice of up to 30 different characters to choose from. More than half of the cast is from the previous game and unfortunately it hurts the overall game. You have new characters such as Mega Man X, Jedah, Gamora, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) and some that are coming down the line as DLC but I feel pretty disappointed that the roster is lackluster. Simply lackluster.

The game does offer a lot and compared to Street Fighter V, at least that’s better than having a barebones product. You have your traditional arcade and versus modes but there’s also Story. Story Mode will take you probably 2-3 hours to complete, more if players plan to do it in a higher difficulty. Mission Mode is back from Marvel 3 and it offers players a set of challenges they need to complete with each character. Online mode is also included with ranked and player matches. Players can also set up lobbied where up to eight players can play against each other. Interestingly, up to four games can happen in a lobby at once. It’s pretty cool. Compared to SFV, this game really offers a lot for your money’s worth and if you have friends then you’ll have a fun time. Also the game has an Easy Combo System that you can thankfully turn off in the options menu. It’s a neat addition for newcomers to get into the game without having to worry about anything complex. It also applies for Easy Hyper Combos as well, which like I mentioned can be turned off.

Though it has many positives, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite has many things that hurt the game. The presentation isn’t that great. Character models may look good but most of the time, they feel off. Compared to the demo where they looked real hideous in some cases, I am happy that Capcom took the liberty to improve on the models after much feedback. The story isn’t as great and can sometimes be real jarring. Since story had been focused on a lot, it also means there are no arcade endings. A bummer. Music is also a bit forgetful. Many of the tracks don’t seem to hook you compared to previous titles and though the game uses techno, it doesn’t click. I mentioned that the roster was lackluster. Several well-known characters such as Wolverine, Magneto and others aren’t in the game. This is mostly due to legal stuff behind the scenes between Marvel/Disney and Fox over the film rights. It’s upsetting that they aren’t in and I can understand why but on the other hand, all of this is just one big advertisement for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Another big nitpick is DLC and it seems Capcom hasn’t learned their lesson from Street Fighter V. Unlike SFV, this issue is minor at best. There is DLC in the game and it comprises of six new characters as well as some alternate costumes. A season pass for this can be purchased but I feel that their business model will only do more harm than good for the overall game. Made no better that the game has a $90 deluxe edition and a $200 collector’s edition that is outright poor. It didn’t help that the game had pretty poor PR especially with Peter “Combofiend” Ross as well as Pete Rosas and Michael Evans saying stuff like characters are functions or saying that there’s no X-Men because fans don’t remember them. It’s poor PR on not just Capcom’s part but also Marvel and Disney. No wonder the game had controversy from the get-go.

Overall, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite isn’t a bad game. It truthfully isn’t. The game has really good gameplay, addicting if you put the time and effort into it. However great gameplay doesn't equal a great game if the overall presentation is lackluster. A poor roster of familiar faces with little new appearances, a story that doesn’t seem to grip you in, questionable choices behind the scenes and you get a recipe for disaster. Should you buy this game at full price? Absolutely not. Wait for a price drop or better yet, wait till Capcom releases a complete edition for this. Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite may be a game that would get the series out of hibernation but it’s not the game we’re looking for.

I give Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite a 5 out of 10. You want a fighting game that feels like Marvel vs. Capcom but plays well? Wait for Dragon Ball Fighter Z.

You have got a point @Crazycrab, I mean it really can't be that difficult for these big publishers to self publish games on PC. The only possible exception might for multiplayer games and finding it cheaper and/or easier to use Valves servers instead of setting up thier own.

Go back only a few years and Steam was the cheapest and simplest way to buy new AAA PC games, and I'm just not convinced that's true anymore. The ace up Steam's sleeve was the indie market offering a massive choice of cheap little gems, but the way Valve runs it has opened the diarrhea gates, and now an endless torrent of shitty games, shady developers, asset flippers and trading card farmers that Valve are happy to accommodate because they make a fortune of this as well.

There's alternatives now. For example, who bought Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice on Steam instead of GOG? Seriously, why would anyone do that?

I wouldn't go all out and say Steam is in trouble, there's still a great dependence on them from the PC community, but they need to fix the quality control issues they have or it will become more of an indie cesspool than it already is.

Removing Steam's monopoly, even very slowly, sounds good to me. They might have to actually adapt and improve the way that they do things, maybe even follow their own policies and have proper moderation.

I'm not hyped for Anthem......  In fact I feel like I barely know anything about it.

I wasn't on the hype train for Destiny 2 either although I did have allot of fun with the first one.  When I tried the BETA it didn't really seem to work properly for me.  I might pick up either Anthem or Destiny 2 at some point but not both.
  8. Crazycrab liked a post in a topic by argetlam350 in Destiny 2 review. Kept ya waiting huh? :D
To correct some lore first, The Queen is actually alive but is MIA. Bungie even has confirmed this.
Also I know no one who wanted the Speaker to stay alive, in fact they praise the Cabal for killing him actually so I don't think any character development for him would change that.
Also why do people think Anthem will be the messiah? Shouldn't we be more cautious on Anthem because of games like Destiny and the Division which is seems to copy. I don't deny it looks interesting but at the same time we shouldn't be hyping it or thanking 'god' for a game we know pretty much nothing on.
As for the review, while not watching it I have seen posts listing the major points both positive and negative. I disagree with some (personally I enjoy Failsafe and wish I could switch her snarky wit with dull Nolan-bot). Also I fall into the camp that really he has no base to critique the raid when he didn't even play it and just comes with his conclusion from someone else footage. To compare to the extreme it would be as if he did a review of a game he never played but watched someone else play it and then came up with his view on the game. Just my opinion on that. It doesn't discredit his other points, he is right on those.
Also, a bit off topic but I can't take Del serious because from what I understand he was a bit of an ahole to anyone who liked the first game even slightly. Plus it seems any game he plays, he constantly nitpicks, even games that are pretty good. But that is a topic for another time.
    -
At the end of the day I guess what I'm try to say is, I agree with the score AND that we should be cautious with Bioware's Anthem and not hype it.

I know that Legolas mentioned it the latest This Week in Gaming but I thought it would be worthwhile posting it here since people like @Glaice were asking about it.  Final Fantasy XV has now been officially confirmed for PC on the Windows Store, Steam and Origin releasing in early 2018.

No mention about pricing or what DLC will be included yet but it will include enhanced graphics including NVidia Hairworks and, more importantly MODS!!!!

I don't know what else to say or do here because I know that Doctor and the rest of the now dwindling fanbase will keep doing what they always do which is be selective in the use of the facts in order to indulge their chasing of what is now an unrealistic dream.  Even after all this I STILL want to see the game come out and deliver at least an approximation of the experience that was promised......  but I'm now 100% certain that is never going to happen.

A few bugs and missing features is acceptable and not a big deal even for a project that has had $156 million of public investment and 5 years of development time (probably closer to 6 if you count the pre-development time before they launched the kickstarter).   However, After looking at all the information that we have readily available I have a judgement and objective opinion and I'm sure it's shared with other members of the community like @Aya Reiko, @Shaggeramong others as well as everyone in the posted "Goons" chat.  I think it's fairly safe to say that in the court of public opinion the amount of progress that has been made and the current level of quality of the product........ is NOT acceptable.

They need to focus of delivering the experience that was promised instead of trying to show off and hype features like the face capture that allows the in game avatar to mimic your live facial expressions, nobody cares about that!  After 5+ years and $156 million of fan investment and we don't even have close to a fully assembled BETA to show for it yet they have the arrogance to have DLC ships and Bundles that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.  THAT'S what people are complaining about!

Sea of Thieves Technical alpha experience

OK guys, so gamescom has finished and I enjoyed watching the streams and events and if any of you play PUBG and didn’t see the footage of the invitational I advise you to watch it as it was insane!

Anyway, as you may or may not know I was lucky enough to be invited onto the technical alpha for the upcoming Sea Of Thieves and I wanted to share my impressions as I know a lot of us are keen on this game.

I cant accompany this with pictures or video and I have to be careful what detail I talk about as I am bound by an NDA but I will try to cover important aspects and what I experienced.

I will try and break it down into a few sections.

During this alpha build Rare were stress testing and also testing cross platform for the first time as well as a couple of minor other bug fixes.

    Invitation and Installation.

I signed up to the insider programme during E3 this year and was invited to participate during gamescom on Xbox one. Anyone is free to sign up, just head over to https://www.seaofthieves.com and sign up, this doesn't give you a guaranteed place but you do see inside info.

Installation was easy through the insider programme app as its linked to your Xbox live account and the game can start when the technical alpha opens.

    Loading and matchmaking

I have participated in a few alphas, maybe is because I am a Data engineer maybe I am just lucky but this is where I expected my first snag

The game loaded instantly, no problems….Nice surprise.

Now I was solo playing my first day and didn't know what to expect so if you are on your own (crews hold 4 people) you start matchmaking so I grabbed a beer and put some TV on settling in for the dreaded alpha matchmaking, less than 1 min later I was loaded into the game and stood on a strange island with a hook hand, I almost dropped my beer, most full release games don't matchmake that fast let alone an alpha build.

    Gameplay

So most of you have seen the videos and know what this is about so I wont go over too much again.

You start off with a random map in your inventory and from there you have to figure out what island to go to, you island hop a couple of times and eventually get a riddle to solve which leads you to treasure of varying quality.

While you are doing this you have to watch out for other ships and crews and there was much nautical talk and sea shanty singing, there were some very tense moments defending out hard won booty from other crews, patching up holes and bailing out as well as stealing others loot, there were a lot of genuine laughs and I can honestly say I had a lot of fun and made some new friends, even though I went all lord Nelson with a Yankee crew

    Issues

Now i'm not going to say there were no bugs or issues, of course there were this was an alpha build but all I really experienced was a slight frame rate drop when I lord Nelson’ed us into a fight with 3 ships gleefully shouting FOR KING, COUNTRY AND THE SERVICE only to be obliterated 20 seconds later by 2 broadsides, yeah OK I got carried away…..

There was also an issue with a couple of opponents papering to teleport but I don't think this was the game itself.

For an alpha build, I would expect disconnections, lag, glitches drop outs, I had worse when Destiny first launched and I kept getting kicked with stupid chipmunk error messages, not once here.

There was also some issues with trolls and griefers but Rare seem to be taking this seriously and banning them from future Alpha participation.

    Who Is This For?

This is a great game for what I like, it doesn't take itself seriously, its meant to put a smile on your face and give you and some friends something to have a good laugh about and it excels at that, every time I played there were laughs and funny moments.

If you prefer hardcore competitive gameplay, or simulation this may not be for you, there are SIM elements (I wont spoil them for you) but this is not a simulation game, its about having a laugh and fun with your friends.

If you are the shy and retiring type, don't have or don't like talking on a mic, this may not be for you either as communication is key to fulfilling objectives and working well together as a crew but it also makes for a more fun experience.

    Conclusions

This build and my experience gives me great hope for this game, the things Rare are talking about implementing will flesh out this game and has the potential to make Rare great again and stop them going the way of Lionhead of Fable fame.

There is so much potential and Rare are listening and actively seeking feedback and suggestions which is refreshing and I am really looking forward to what they do next.

If I hear drunken sailor played on an accordion one more time I think i'm gonna burst a blood vessel.

So this concludes my experience, I hope you enjoyed it, if there is something you want to know that I haven't covered please ask and if I can answer I will do.

Here's the cold hard truth you blatantly ignored.  The whole thing, is late.  It was supposed to be out in 2014, but here we are in 2017 with the third Alpha, an ALPHA with its scope significantly reduced, being delayed for nearly a year, and it is clearly a mess.  Its doesn't matter how many branches it has, it means nothing if it is not working, and the Chris' on-rails presentation demonstrated that the whole thing is a trainwreck.
And yet you continue to lie, distort, and just ignore things you can't dispute.  You post nothing but the latest bullshit propaganda from CIG.  You have no thoughts of your own. If we wiped clean every bit of CIG's propaganda, every bullshit hype vid you have posted, then this one truth becomes clear; You have contributed nothing here.  You have no credibility, and the last vid you posted is all the proof anyone could ever need of that.  You are pathetic.  You offer nothing.  My advise to you...
    And just leave.

First, the evidence was right there. The game pretty much crashed and had severe bugs in it. The commentery, the twitch chat and e even the prenters of the show could see this was mess that hasn't improved much if at all this past year. Those are not random facts, just facts you don't wanna believe, so you put your blinkers on.

Second, who the hell said Squadron 42 had a $0 budget? Clearly a significant portion of the $150+ million was spent on it and idea's otherwise, be it a criticism or a defence, would be ludicrous.

Thirdly, Ayais right. With $150+ million of thier fans and at least 5 years in development and if that's the best they can do, there's only one to descride it. Pathetic.

And lastly, why are you so quick to debate this me why I'm not even the one poining this out. There's no  point whinging to me about it, so stop being such a coward and bring it up with Aya.

Wow.  Seriously wow.  You have a serious case of burying your head in the sand when things do look good for you or this game.
This godforsaken game has been in production since 2012 with an original release date of 2014.  SO DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT TRYING TO PUSH THAT BULLSHIT LIE THAT THE GAME HAS BEEN IN PRODUCTION FOR LESS THAN THAT.
Furthermore, CIG has taken loans to keep the project going.  And yet they've touted they have raised $150+ million to fund production. People don't take loans from Coutts with virtually the whole game as collateral for "reasons", they take them when they're broke and can't fund ongoing operations.  Meaning, CIG HAS BURNED THROUGH MOST, IF NOT ALL, OF THE CROWDFUNDING TO MAKE A BARELY FUNCTIONAL ALPHA.
edit- Correction. An on-rails CryEngine level that crashed and was a bug-ridden mess.  3.0, like S42, is still MIA.
Oh, and Alpha 3 is nearly a year late, and, like the full game itself, is heavily scaled back from the original plan.  https://imgur.com/a/273z5#dcTTg5k
But please keep spewing the propaganda Spectrum, and by proxy CIG, wants you to puke out.  But since all you do is recite the same pre-packaged bullshit with nary an original thought at all, you might as well do everyone a favor and just leave.
