i only pre order games i know won't be available the next day if i didn't get it on day 1. GTA5 is a prime example. it was indeed sold out within 24 hours at my local store and it was a week wait before they got any new stock.

either that or... games on steam often go up for pre order and are cheaper IF you pre order them. when the game goes on sale it might be £39.99 but you could have got it for £31 if you pre ordered it. (alien isolation). so in this case, i also consider these for pre order. i don't really care about the free stuff that comes with, i just want it cheaper or first if i will be handicapped for a week if i don't pre order a game.
  2. By_zeus_beard liked a post in a topic by Variloh in Nintendo lives up to its hype
There are many games outside of Nintendo that hype the next installment in there series, GTA V comes to mind. As for inovation, IMO Nintendo seems to be the only one who actually is inovating, people tend to use the argument "uh they dont create new IPs, they are just recylcing etc" which is simply not true btw, but i think its more a testament of how good there games actually are, COD games have been comeing out like baked bread and the quality has stedily come down, while mario kart 8 is said to be the best of the franchise as well as pokemon X and Y.
The reason your friends own the other consoles is because of the massive amount of hype that has been put around those consoles, they havent proved anything yet, but they are selling like crazy. I think its very provable that between the Wii U, Xbox one and the PS4 the one with the best games right now is the Wii U. Regarding Hype i have posted a topic on http://angryjoeshow.com/ajsa/topic/19454-are-popular-youtubers-and-twitch-personalitys-adding-to-the-hype-problem/ regarding the role youtubers and twitchers have in the matter. G'day AJSA, fellow Dota 2 players and anyone else reading this

The forums have become quite the mess over the past couple months so I'm doing something I should have done a long time ago.

This thread is going to be my submissions of old threads, posts and links that have appeared previously in the AJSA's Dota 2 forum but have since been dragged down and lost.

You're free to add any threads/posts you've found but I will be moderating this thread so please be serious. This is a thread to help people see what a great community we have and hopefully help people along the way.

Red titles are very important, Orange are important, Blue are less important but still something I felt was needed in here. Pink are what I found fun, less informative but still something I wanted to put here.
SPECIAL thanks to Thrower for helping me out with this, took me a while to dig into the forums so his help was super valuable!
Edit: For future additions I'll insert the date I added the link to this thread

  4. mrfool liked a post in a topic by Variloh in Can the indie game market heal our industry? (solve the hype problem)
Well first off, i will talk about the question and then mark where it ends. After this point i will discuss Gamer Mind, its future and so forth. Keep in mind these topics are discused on the forementioned show on www.twitch.tv/variloh if you would like to participate, mesage me here, on twitch or on twitter @variloh..
    As per todays question
we have been talking about the hype problem in the industry for the past month and we have talked about two potential solutions, but found them to be inadequate.
Can the indie game market be the solution? As in, can indie games and developers be more then just "the outside thing" and become all that the triple A industry has gravitated away from? Pioneers, innovators, great games, low hype etc.
    Leave your comments down below!
This is where the question ends
    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Now that the question is done , i would like to thank the AJSA for supporting my show this season. It has been an honor and privilege to entertain, debate and get to know as many of you as i have. As per a second season, many of you have asked me to do it, i will continue to evaluate it, if you guys like the show and want to see a season 2, i will invest in a camera and try to take the show to a next level.
I would like to thank the AJSA mods for allowing my posts and references to my show, you guys have been great and deserve the praise, specifically im looking and alex_spartan and fluffy, you guys where front and center. Thank you.
I would also like to thank the higher command for allowing me to do my thing. I would like to thank guys like Craigr and Damion, for supporting the show in there own ways.
But more then everything, thank each and every one of you who viewed these topics, posted, came on the show. followed or provided feedback, you guys made this whole thing possible and i hope the things we have discussed can help forward not just the AJSA but the gaming community as a whole, i believe firmly the gaming community can make a huge difference in the world (just look at SGDQ!) and the people i have interacted with are proof of that. Thanks and see you this Thursday at the season finale, 10 pm gmt +2/].

Development companies are already getting gamers involved, except they're the gamers who they're marketing the game for. I guess Focus Group is the term I'm thinking of, and doing this, isn't going to help with over promising and over-hype in games.
  6. Variloh liked a post in a topic by EarthwormBen in Nintendo lives up to its hype
I think that Nintendo games are hyped enough but they are not in your face as much, every year a new cod is at E3 and your forced to pay for it to keep getting the same multiplayer experience.... Mario Kart 7 lasted nearly 4 years for me, Nintendo are one of them publishers that make games that people will still play in years time.
How many "hard-core" gamers have actually played Metroid Prime, not too many i reckon and I think the hard-core level on this is near elder scrolls.

I just wanted to shed light that it seems IMO the only company whose games are living up to its hype is nintendo. Titanfall didnt, Watch dogs apparently didn't, and there are really no trully intresting games out on Xbox one and PS4 yet (exclusives)(IMO AND YET READ THOSE TWO THINGS). Yet Nintendos latest hyped games: pokemon x/y, Mario Kart 8, fire Emblem Awakeining, mario 3d world, animal crossing new leaf. etc are all living up to there hype. Yet it seems all people can say about nintendo is how big a failure the wii u is.... on  a related topic, are youtubers/streamers partially responsible for this?  http://angryjoeshow.com/ajsa/topic/19454-are-popular-youtubers-and-twitch-personalitys-adding-to-the-hype-problem/

    This is very disturbing,
Being in spain, my girlfriend has the language set to spanish. I will test this, but lately we have exclusively played with spanish people, a very disturbing thought btw. Im not aware if it cuts the english language, i will further test it. I also dont know the Russian language situation but if it does put it as an exclusive option, it would be more then a bug...Russian players particular situation in the dota 2 commnity isint a pretty one, its not a dirty secret that they are segregated and targeted by the rest of the community. If this separation exists, then this is an alarming issue since valve would be directly supporting the discrimination against them. If more evidence arises this topic would shine light on a much larger issue then just a "bug".
One of the things that made dota 2 beautiful was interacting with people around the world, cutting that would be a huge shame and a disservice to the community.
  11. Variloh liked a post in a topic by ofFireandStone in Can piracy be a answer to overhyped AAA games?
If you don't like a product (whether that be because of the manufacturer their business policies or affiliates) the answer is not buying it at all, and staying far away from it all.

Piracy is just a method to get something without investing into it.
  12. Variloh liked a post in a topic by Mr_E_Meatshield in Can piracy be a answer to overhyped AAA games?
Pirates have defended that Piracy isn't theft since the original is still there, and that they're making a copy.

Just remembered that there's a few Jimquisition videos about Piracy (Strong Language Warning):

Companies will always see it as a problem that needs fixing. If they deem that piracy has become bad enough, they'll find a way to fight it, and fail in doing so *coughDRMcough* or not releasing something on a platform that has high piracy rates. They're not going to start making better non-hyped products because of piracy.

  14. Variloh liked a post in a topic by KoinGaming in Can piracy be a answer to overhyped AAA games?
Alright I'll just say why in some cases Piracy is alright. You're free to disagree with me, but I personally will never reconsider THIS specific stance.
    1. Piracy is alright if you buy it right after finishing it.. In our current gaming culture we have a TON of shit releases, and BF4's. Trying the game out before buying it is ALRIGHT, because the developers will still get the money, and you the consumer has had time to verify if the game is legit or not (Or if you play the game, and wait till your next paycheck or something, then buy it full-price, then that's also alright. Because Devs will get that money, and you got to play the game..)
    2. Piracy is alright if you get a game, play it for a few hours (Don't finish it.), and then uninstall. You checked the game out, saw if the gameplay fit your taste, and then stopped playing after you saw what the game had to offer. People shouldn't play through games and say "I didn't like this part so I don't pay for it!" while finishing the game and enjoying the other 90% of it. If you finish the game, then the dev deserves the money. Why would you even play a game that you didn't like? Origin has currently a really good refund policy, that is similar to "this sort of piracy". If you don't like the game, and have played it for a couple of hours, then you can refund it. This thing is 100% normal. Cause you do the Quality control (That Steam DOESN'T HAVE or even BOTHER with.) with your own eyes.. Understand that EVEN EA understands that, that kind of customer support is how to do things. EVEN Origin rapes Steams ass with its customer support!
    3. Any other kind of excuse for piracy doesn't work. You might not have money, but that doesn't mean that you NEED that game. The game has a price because it's worth money. If you want you can pirate a game, cause hey there's no loss to the developer because you wouldn't have any money to spend on that company anyway, and there's no actual sale loss there (And if the game was good you'll buy it later down the line cause you had fond memories of the game.). But I'm not saying that's alright. It is still wrong to do that, but you'll make that choice for yourself, cause there are people who'd rather have that 10 bucks for actual food rather then a game.
    4. Piracy DOESN'T work the same as a "Boycott" (And piracy doesn't follow the meaning of boycott either.). I've seen a lot of people say "I don't want to support that practice", then don't fucking buy the game. Dude. Piracy doesn't show the company that they're fucking up, it shows that everyone fucking wants to play the game, and as long as their DRM isn't as good, they can't turn them into customers. This kind of piracy fucks over the people that actually buy the games. For example Ubisoft will make their DRM even worse, and the people who legit buy the games will suffer.. Piracy isn't a form of boycott, Piracy is a sign that the developers need to strengthen their DRM.

So yeah. Boycott=/= Piracy, and there are some good uses with piracy.

    Green and not so mean
  16. Variloh liked a post in a topic by Gone too in Can piracy be a answer to overhyped AAA games?
Okay this is a tough one I suppose. I feel I should precede this with the tidbit fact that Brazil is one of the world's largest pirating countries since the 90's, much like China and Russia. Even though China gets the piracy fame more than all of us, publishers have noticed the piracy habit a long time ago and Steam's localization has very well adjusted lower prices due to that but that's now let's talk about the then.

Back in the early 90's a N64 game was worth $200 or more, the cheap years old ones were in the 120 range. My father once bought a(still functioning) Sidewinder joystick for $500, I've no idea how much it retailed for in the US but I take it wasn't that much. Those ridiculous prices are all due to humongous import taxes and a curious Brazilian habit of paying anyway and not complaining, but that's the upper classes of course the middle class and lower found a way around in piracy and it thrived. Was it right? No, but neither was the government ripping everyone off to "protect the internal market" that didn't exist in the first place anyway. Resistance takes many forms and over time it waned retail and publishers(who never wanted to change the landscape in the first place and were making big profits with those hilarious prices anyway.) into actually dropping it bit by bit.

Like I said earlier prices only really got better with Steam though and to this day I know very few people who actually buy "original" console games, it's been ingrained into popular culture that buying expensive original products is for suckers. Even when the software is pretty cheap nowadays, cheaper than the US almost every time, a lot of people will pirate instead due to cultural habit worse yet there are shops laden with pirated products sometimes in high profile locations it's a legacy of the 90's in Brazil.

And thus I expose where I'm coming from on the AAA title piracy and why my point of view might be different than most, loath as I am of most of my countrymen's habits I have in the past pirated $200 games, mostly on Playstation and PC, Even though my family is and was well-off it didn't have that much money to throw around every now and again. That changed a lot in the 2000s with the advent of CD keys and multiplayer becoming a thing, but it still happened quite a bit nowadays it doesn't really, if I think a game might not be up to expectations I just wait til the next seasonal Steam sale and buy it cheap if I still want to buy it at all.

The way I see it, Piracy can be used(and has been as my example shows) as a force for change and whenever something's deeply unreasonable it'll happen more, like when $200 games dominate the market. I know it's illegal and somewhat immoral but so were all revolutions now I'm not saying mass pirating the latest EA game will change the world for the better but it might just send the right message to EA for once, sadly it has been shown time and time again by the gaming community that a boycott or anything even close to it will never ever happen even if there's a major consensus that EA sucks and Battlefield Hardline is just Battlefield 3 with cops and no tanks droves of people will still pre-order it so I suppose that even though I think it could and would work to mass pirate shitty games in resistance to Publishers I don't believe it's feasible and am thus not going to do it.

I find Steam infinitely more convenient than Piratebay.

I thought that after being here on the AJSA forums you would learn not to argue with Americans by now.

I like exclusivity.  When I say that I mean I like fully exclusive titles.  Not that timed exclusive crap which just pisses everyone off.  They are what make consoles different and are what you buy a console to play.  Imagine, if there was one console that got every game.  Then what would be the point of owning the others.  Would you trust a company that owns the entire console market.  It's a recipe for anti-consumerism.  Then again, I'm an old dog when it comes to gaming, so my opinion may be outdated and the new, cool, and hip thing may be to hate exclusivity.

I can honestly say that I'm not getting this here. Being a gamer from back in the days of late Snes up to now, I still have the mindset of "If there is something I want, I will work to get it." when it comes to Video Games. I Own a multitude of things next to my newly built PC,  from the Gamecube, 3DS, Ps1-4, Wii, Wii-U, etc. And the reason I got them: There were games that interested me on those Consoles.

I see a lot of people complaining about exclusives nowadays, going to far as to say that the game is being held "Hostage". My Mindset must be different seeing as I do understand that for more people to buy something on a certain side, there needs to be ways to entice them. Same goes for the PC and why I built it. When it comes to gaming, There are PC games I wanted to play, yet couldn't get anywhere else...so I decided to build it. It's not for the sake of better resolution or framerate...it's just to play some other games.

I'm not understanding where a game being exclusive for a company is a bad thing, seeing as it has been going on ever sense the start of the gaming industry. And the only way TO play the game was to buy that console, which some people back in the day were more than willing to do, but NOW the games are being held hostage?

What about Nintendo? They make nothing BUT exclusives for their console. Are they the biggest kidnappers of they gaming industry?

Or maybe it's because a company is being paid to help have a game made on their console (Not paying a company to put an already mostly developed game onto their console).

I don't understand this notion. At all.

Well, since almost everyone here has gone with the "piracy is bad", "piracy is shit" thing, let me explain you this. I defend piracy in a sense. I think that the piracy became an answer to the over-the-top prices that some games get, deservingly or not. I myself what I do is this. I pirate the games, and if I find them on a store, I buy them after! After I buy them, I install the legit version, remove the pirated one, and tada, I enjoy it. Call me idealist, or kid, but I think the piracy is a new way of thinking stuff out. We come with the stereotypical image of the game pirate as an obnoxious idiot that doesnt want to pay for games. What if there's a sector on there that actually buys them after playing them through the pirated version? Also, Pirated versions dont have the full features of a game, multiplayer, extras, etc. Thats why I think most of those people end up buying the game because they want to see the extras and multiplayer, like I did with Space Marine. I pirated it, but now I got the legit version, and im playing Multiplayer tons of times there. So well, I think that kind of piracy is good to a certain degree.

Not everyone shares your opinion. "Right" and "wrong" are just abstract concepts that have little meaning if you are unwilling or unable to force your will on to others and make them conform to your wishes.

I'd say the games they release now on the wii and wii-U were Fine...when they were made by nintendo themselves instead of shovelware,

    Hi guys
First off, im a huge fan of the show and have done my part for the community by doing the pre/post shows for the last dota 2 tourny, so keep in mind this forum is NOT a personal attack but a constructive form of critisism of a fan.
Something that has been bothering for a long time is joes lack of coverage anything nintendo. I understand he doesnt like the system, which is fine, but, specially in this E3, it has become obvious how he ignores it completely, as in cant even acknowledge when they do something excellent. In his E3 "winner of E3" blog, he gives nintendo the win and talks about them for a wooping 2 mins. He couldnt even give them the overwhelming win (which the internet agrees they had) and even slamming criticism against them (comments made on the amibo) in those short 2 mins.
The reason why i see joe as superior to big companies with an agenda is because of how neutral and fair he theoretically is, he actually plays the whole game he reviews and  even when he was mostly an xbox guy he could point out the good the bad and the ugly of said console, all this is great, but his attitude towards nintendo, IMO, isint that of a neutral reviewer, and it worries me, as clearly, xbox and ps4 are inferior as of right now, regarding there game library, and the assumption that nintendos is repetitive and empty of new content is just not true. I think it should be brought to our attention that the only games that are being as good as the hype says they are, are nintendo games, Titanfall and watchdogs fall short to there hype, mario kart 8, super mario 3d world do, thats just a fact. I know il get a lot of hate for saying all this as some people dont understand "constructive criticism" and as well hate nintendo to the point that anyone suggesting they do ANYTHING better at a specific time usually leads to fanboy eplilectic attacks.
    Thanks for listening guys

I have a twitch channel where i do a show called "Gamer Mind" every thursday and talk about the things that i believe arent talked about enough in todays video game landscape (an example is the sometimes mindless hate towards nintento, the commitment to "the hype" etc) on www.twitch.tv/variloh

As a Vita owner I agree that the Vita is superior hardware, but has weaker software by a wide margin.  Though I'm not sure the point you're making about being behind the times.  The sub-functions of the consoles, the actual raw power, or the software, because I'll grant credence to the first two, but Nintendo software is proven to have a strong market.  The market hasn't shifted in a single year from when the 3DS sales took off like a rocket.

Edit:  Well, this got off-topic, so to bring it to a point.  Yes, I do think Joe has an obvious, all-be-it, unintentional bias.  Though the strength of Nintendo software at least forced Joe to acknowledge it and that is a step in the right direction.  I hope that the Wii U ends up pulling another rabbit out of the hat like the 3DS did.

I do not like the versus mentaiity when all the companies brings out their new games and the extremists of opposite sides fight eachover. I think this is more a problem with us gamers rather than e3. Not that E3 is innocent, the place is from my perspective more of a advertising place for new games. Showing of trailers and such to businessmen and youtube press. Not very friendly to go on as a consumer.
But since we can sit here and watch the news from here  then i dont see it any different to ordinary gaming news, Not dangerous for the watcher.
