  2. Completed: Bloodstained Ritual of the Night Platform: PC Bloodstaind easily delivers as a successor to the metroidvania style Castlevania. The game takes many ideas from a variety of Castlevania titles giving a well made game for fans of that series; wide variety of weapons that can make use of special attacks, learning passive or offensive abilities from each enemy in the game, an ability to invert the environment, secret areas and items needed to get the true ending, characters with story nods that can resemble previous Castlevania characters, etc. The weapon, equipment, and magic variety gives you a lot of ways to play the game with gun focused builds that can be backed up by summoned monsters, shield magics to deflect attacks, weapons with techniques that can even offer you early ways to reach secret areas, craftable weapons with special properties often based off other franchises (like an obvious lightsaber style weapon that has a stun effect), and a wide variety of offensive magic abilities. Some items are even included that effect more than just your stats, such as giving you accessories that will cause the camera to remain zoomed in or out. The castle and outdoor environments are well designed with each section having their own feel to them and accompanying music track and giving you multiple paths to let you decide how to explore. There are some fun enemy designs, including things like mimic chairs that you can sit down on that will proceed to throw you into a pit of spikes or ones that are nods to other games like the Shovel Knights you find in the underground sections. The art and backgrounds received a large improvement in the final phase of the game's design, and while the 3D doesn't always look good it does allow for a couple of the more cinematic attacks some of the bosses can make use of. Too much time is going to be spent farming enemies if you plan to make use of crafting, preparing food recipes (which is also needed for many side quests), or sometimes even just to see what ability you can eventually absorb from your enemies. As is the problem in all the Castlevania games in this style, you are almost always overpowered and typically massively overpowered if you know what you are doing, and it's more difficult to appreciate all the enemy and boss designs when you can kill some of them before they can typically even do anything or without even bothering to move in the case of some of the bosses. Most of the bosses just aren't that interesting to begin with, either having very limited move-sets or fighting in a very slow and predictable style. Completed: Paratopic Platform: PC Follows a smuggler, assassin, and photographer using jump cutting techniques similar to the game Viriginia. An unsettling visual style that looks graphically similar to what you might see on the original Playstation with the atmosphere further improved by the music and sound design. The narrative can be difficult to piece together, more so without finding some hidden or choice based interaction and things are left vague enough where you can only make assumptions about a plot involving aliens, hidden facilities, and effected VHS tapes turning people into monsters. The style certainly isn't going to be for a lot of people but its a short interesting game and I hope the developers are able to return to the setting sometime. Completed: Neo Cab Platform: PC You play as one of the last few Uber style taxis operated by a real person in a near future somewhat cyberpunk setting. Very well written stories that play out with the game's passengers focusing on the gig economy, the main corporations increasing control of the city/police/traffic laws, and the dependence on and disillusionment with living in the current state of the city and the role a person has in it. A bracelet shows your emotional state changed by your dialogue options can effect conversations but rarely in a major way, though the bracelet itself and technology like it do play a more important role in the plot. Money/ratings are almost mechanically pointless outside of showing how meager your earners are and how quickly your job can be damaged by impossible to please customers, which really doesn't narratively come up much with the story being so focused on the corporation and their AI operated vehicles risking putting you out of work. This game does share some similarities with the other recently released Noir mystery taxi driver game Night Call. Different artistically, noir vs a cyberpunk aesthetic, both focused on the lives of the people you pick up. I wouldn't really recommend one over the other as they both have some great short stories from the passengers. The main difference being that this has a more linear style compared to all the random events of Night Call (still had never even seen some in multiple playthroughs of that game), less overall events, this has more impact with side character coming into play in the main story, and this lacks the very poor and repeated mystery segments of Night Call. This will give you a better main narrative, while Night Call will give you more events often with just as high of quality but you will also have to deal with a lot more randomness possibly preventing you from finishing stories you want to finish in a given playthrough or even from seeing them at all.
  3. Completed: Children of Morta Platform: PC Children of Morta is hack and slash game with that takes places throughout eight main stages and three smaller story focused areas with the central family of character attempting to fight back the corruption of the land stemming from an angry god. Beautiful artwork that can quickly go from horrific and eerie to warm and inviting. Six characters that are unique to play with runes to be found in dungeons that effect how their attacks perform, further separating them. Outside of story events the house/hub areas has a lot of character building moments from seeing what each member of the family is thinking, seeing them live their lives, and seeing the houses filled with the souvenirs of their adventures. They might gather to eat a meal or play a board game, train together, the largest son carries around the youngest on his shoulders, oldest daughter has her hair brushed by her mom, character will comment on the side events that you can run into in the dungeons, etc. The base gameplay is enjoyable and fast paced with the different characters likely stopping you from replaying similar areas to gather more money and experience. Side events can be found in the randomly generated dungeons that have you meeting new characters, fighting with another family member, collecting scrolls to learn more of the games world, or possibly an events that will gain you future members of the households. While it is primarily going to be a single player game (two player local co-op is available, with no one to try that with I have no idea how that would be balanced) each character eventually unlocks an ability where they can briefly spawn in to help the controlled family member during certain situations (block fatal damage, knock back enemies when surrounded, etc) which was a nice way to feel like they are fighting together. There is a fairly limited number of enemy types. Each of the eight main areas of the game has four floors to them, three larger sections followed by a boss room. The eight stages are broken up into three different areas of the world with some unique enemies and hazards but some are still reused, some are never present in the earlier stages, and even with all of them their just isn't much variety. Even the powered up enemies you occasionally run into just have the same bonuses of having more health, spawning enemies, or dropping AoE attacks from the sky to stun you. Each character has what will end up being an extremely linear skill tree, by the time I beat the fairly short game I hadn't even gotten any of the six characters to reach their final two abilities by hitting level 20. The game makes for a terrible roguelike even though it in many ways seems to be set up to be one, it prevents you from going any further than three floors and a boss, there is no penalty for death, you will find randomized buffs, runes, and abilities but some of these are so uninteresting or so poor for certain characters that you are able to do little more than hope you get what fits your character and playstyle, and the layout of the floors is randomized but will be populated by the same enemy and hazard types. While the story and character moments in the game is often on the stronger side, the finale of the game gives you terrible reasoning for your antagonist's actions followed by a poor and very easy boss fight. The endgame is made worse by your character likely just being too powerful for any of the dungeons to really pose any challenge, and seeing as I had only hit level 17 with my strongest characters it could only get easier. A fun and beautiful looking game while it lasts that ends on a fairly dull note and doesn't have much to get you to come back to it when a lot of similar styled games would give you reason to keep playing. Maybe this will be improved with future updates or if new content is added as the game seems to be selling quite well.

  9. Completed: Gears 5 Platform: PC Relic weapons are nice. Jack is a nice tactical feature and playing as it in co-op an interesting change. Plot focuses even more than the past games on strained character relationships, trying to live a civilian life, mindset of the COG, war crimes, loss, and trauma, at odds with amount of death utter and incompetence from all but the main character and already satirical characters and combat. Poor story, JD has a nonsensical arc. Terrible allied AI. Awful single player encounters that break the AI. Poor Open world elements in more than half the game that takes away from the usual good level design of the series and amounts to little more than wasted time. The PC version typically ran perfectly except in cutscenes where it would freeze, lag, or have the sound cut out, grabbing enemies doesn't seem to work on the PC (or they lied about what button it is), forcing you to hold down the reload button instead of the melee button for chainsaws on the PC (maybe the Xbox too) is a poor change, pretty sure I exploded from nothing quite a few times and once saw a Boomshot grenade curve around the map to kill me. Completed: The Last Door Season 1 Platform: PC You receive a letter from an old boarding school friend, something terrible has happened involving events you can no longer remember involving opening the veil to a Lovecraftian God. Low resolution pixel art and good music both help to creates an unsettling, foreboding, and mysterious atmosphere that perfectly goes with the tone of the game. Does fall into usual point and click issues of needing to pixel hunt for items and some poor puzzle logic that as is often the case doesn't always fit well. Completed: Control Platform: PC Set in a physics defying haunted house heavy with brutalist style and the trappings of a corporate office space where the workers have lost what little semblance of control they once had with great destructive environments clashing alongside the often corporate environment. Ashtray maze is brief but one of the most entertaining and well designed segments I've played in some time. Excellent collectibles, films, and audio logs revealing more setting lore. Setting opens up infinite possibilities for more content or sequels, and with the strong ending of the game and hopefully more experimental nature that DLC can take I'm excited to see what they do. Combat gameplay is, ok, guns are never that interesting with dull upgrades and mods and your telekinesis becomes extremely powerful and as the more interesting thing to look at tends to make the guns much less useful over time. I found no real use for the ability to convert your enemies and saw no reason to ever use the shield ability. It is disappointing that the most interesting thing you do with your telekinesis outside of combat is to throw large power supply blocks into open block slots on walls in sections that couldn't even be called a puzzle but just odd busywork. Poor bosses that do nothing for the setting, offer nothing interesting combat wise, and a large number of their main gimmick is to spawn generic enemies as they get wounded. Focused on limited TPS gameplay over exploring the unique and interesting setting. The gun is a boring unimaginative gamey waste of the setting that doesn't even feel like it should be there in a game where you could have been binding much more interesting abilities to your character that fit more with the objects of power you tend to interact with, and it isn't designed well in any capacity from how you mod it, unlock other forms, equip those forms, upgrade it, or at times even when it comes to actually using it. As an example of other things that would have fit better than a gun, what if you bound the stop light that you run into on a side mission to you, giving you the power to not only slow or stop enemies and their attacks but also making use of it by effecting the actual environment. Weapon upgrades, creating mods, timed missions, and board objectives all seem like an afterthought. The excellent ashtray maze and endgame sections show how much more interesting a lot of the base game could have been.

  12. Completed: The Bard's Tale IV: Director's Cut Platform: PC Decent combat system. Some very good music, though oddly placed at times. Alcoholic Bards. Some very good puzzles for hidden items or upgrades that require you to pay attention to what is said and to environment details. Main characters tend to all be fairly amusing. Too many repeated time wasting puzzles that amount to nothing more than busywork and don't even make sense in world. Equipment gives different ways to focus a character but some just aren't going to be very useful. Puzzle weapons are a cool idea, but almost never interesting to solve and the weapons tend to be weaker than the other equipment you will have. There are multiple hidden weapons that have entire areas that you need to go through to find them, ones with an important place in the lore of the game's world, that are for some reason still too weak to be useful. Very inconsistent tone of the story, with a terrible first impression (even seeming to struggle with keeping a stable framerate in the opening section), and certain parts of the game seem like plot was either cut or events were moved with no explanation for remaining details. Overstays its welcome with you long having gotten all the abilities and the equipment you are going to use, likely about four or five areas before the end, with a long time spent having to fight pitiful enemies and bosses. Extremely buggy requiring frequent reloads, which was odd for something that seems so mechanically simple. Characters would just no longer be able to be chosen in combat, character would absorb the abilities of other characters and lose theirs in battle, abilities would randomly be unequipped, the menu button would stop working, enemy placement would be a space or two beyond what should be allowed preventing me from even seeing or clicking on some of them at times, crashes at game over, crash at new area loads, crash at quest completion, and would crash during certain dialogue events. Completed: Metal Slug Platform: Arcade Was a good start to the series with the great animations the series is known for. Suffers from the slowdown the series is known for and lacks the stranger enjoyable moments of some of the later titles like turning into a zombie, wider variety of vehicles, and more outlandish boss enemies. Completed: Metal Slug 5 Platform: Arcade Adds a new slide move that isn't responsive enough to be overly useful but looks cool when you shoot with it and is a good way to get out of some bad spots. Some nice new vehicles to use, if only briefly. New enemies replacing the series staples, mostly just costume change for the soldiers. Missing some of the more humorous aspects of the previous games and the character body changes and supernatural elements (until you fight a demon as the final boss). Poor final bosses.

  18. Completed: Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Platform: PC Mechanically dull, visually pretty but filled with generic locations and interpretations of areas of Norse mythology, filled with generic stories of legends to find. Senua's depicted life revolves around her mental illness and pain, offers no room for nuance in its depiction only the light of perfect seeming dead boyfriend and contrasted by a traumatized, confused, and tortured Senua in past and present that give you no reason to care about any aspect of the world and little reason to care about her. A poor finale with an ending and certain lines of dialogue falling more into ableism in its depiction of mental illness or utter stupidity. And for a game focused on mental illness or disability it offers extremely poor options to cater to players that could players with its focus on poorly subtitled near constant voices that are difficult to hear without wearing a headset. A slog to get through even with its short length, likely not helped with its odd voice-over design that usually requires you to stand around to hear the story from a rune as continuing on will cause voices to play over each other, cut lines out, or drop to such a low volume that you will be unable to hear it. Completed: Thimbleweed Park Platform: PC Adventure game in the style of early 90s games. Looks good, mostly good puzzles. With five characters to switch between it can take a bit longer to get through than most games of this style and the added length and interactions tends to stretch out the time between good jokes. An abrupt and odd ending that, while making the homages and references to old games make sense in context, ends up dulling all the characters stories which weren't always that detailed in the first place. Completed: Halo Wars 2 Platform: PC Pretty cutscenes filled with a lot of generic cheesy hologram technology, but the campaign is short, dull, and ends on what will likely be an unresolved cliffhanger. Card based blitz mod is an interesting idea but too hectic for console style controls and cards leveling as you get more is poor balance. Some odd and lacking control features on the PC, as well as some poor visual choices and what I would assume is a bug they never fixed making it difficult to select single units out of groups.

  21. Completed: Fire Emblem Three Houses Platform: Switch This finally feels like a game that takes almost everything the awful Awakening and more often mediocre Fates wanted to do and gets a lot of it right. The terrible pairing system of those games is gone, replaced with an adjutant system that allows you to assign 1-3 characters to fight with another and to very rarely help out slightly in battle (as opposed to blocking entire attacks or doing massive damage and stat boosts for every deployed character, more for building supports and getting the paired character some XP) and battalions of soldiers that give smaller stat or damage boosts, useful tactical abilities, make it feel like a larger battle (although they visually never engage in fights in an entertaining way). Makes good use of systems Awakening/Fates attempted. The game allows for four story paths with the events and interactions happening between battles giving you more information about the world, side characters, and the characters that can join your army or that you might end up fighting. Every support isn't leading to characters getting married allowing much more sensible conclusions and non romantic endings for characters that can go off to do things together, the actual support conversations themselves are much improved and finally give an actual scene where multiple characters and an area can be involved as opposed to just talking portraits. When a five year time skip happens later in the characters visually look different and the ones you would probably expect to have experienced more growth in the time do have some personality differences. Most of the characters are very likable and have great interactions with each other, the best that has been in the series as a whole. The opening academy setting gives a good reason for characters to have multiple classes they can become and the base stat growths and talents of units does still make them favor certain areas. Nice painting look to the scenes during the chapter opens. The only area that it doesn't improve on what the series has been doing since Awakening is that it has absolutely no balance. Even people who are bad enough at the series to have had problems with entries like Awakening are saying how overpowered their characters are (some even on hard), even without them fighting optional or many optional battles. I tended to avoid side battles that weren't story, side quest, or character related and even with me recruiting every single character I was allowed to (which is very easy, and does certainly worsen the story battles in the second part of the game when your enemies have basically no one supporting them) and leveling up every single one of them my characters were still overpowered. Every month you have three or four days where you can choose to explore (move around the academy area to find quests, shop, build support ratings, get story information, recruit characters, etc, useful as many times as possible until you recruit everyone then only useful once per month for story elements), rest (worthless), seminar (worthless), or battle (fight 1-3 non main battles based on your professor ranking). The battles can be character, quest, monster appearance, or reward related or just a random fight on a very small number of repeated dull maps (on normal you can fight on the random map as many times as you want). It became a problem in the second part of the game where there was literally nothing for me to do of value but fight on the same 2-3 repeated reward maps, made worse that the monster maps just add a monster to one of the existing maps with the same other enemy units. The extremely easy difficulty is made worse by a time rewind ability that you will eventually get around 12 uses of per battle that allows you to go back any number of actions you want, if toned down this would be a nice feature if the game had any difficulty. When they added the ability to turn off permanent character death they might as well have added the ability to skip battles entirely, and in this game, I probably would have made use of that ability. The actual story of the game is improved over the recent games by letting you get to know more characters that you could be fighting against, doing more world building between fights, and giving you four different paths but an issue with the different paths is that you miss out on a lot of story and side character knowledge in what tends to be a pretty long game, there are very few main battles compared to past titles, and your story path locks you into only getting comments from a particular classes characters even when you have recruited other people. The story path I took even ended when there could easily have been more to come after it, basically giving a greater group of villains and then just saying that was handled after the war in closing text stories for the characters. A huge missed opportunity was the opening which is just one battle with a plot that just makes everyone look stupid before throwing you into a nonsensically handed out role as a teacher when it could have had multiple maps and introduced you more to not only the three lords you have to pick from but also all or some of their classmates. Hell, Fire Emblem 7 basically included a 10 mission tutorial that gave a whole backstory to one of the games main characters and allowed her to meet multiple characters you could recruit later. Based on the DLC announcements it sounds like they are adding new random battle maps, quests, and story content (though that might be a side thing as opposed to attached to the main game) and if that adds more variety that could certainly help the gameplay. They managed to improve or fix a lot of the problems with the kind of content they have been adding, if they would finally stop adding random side battles with no story significance that breaks the games they could easily start releasing the best games in the series. Completed: Blazing Chrome Platform: PC Fun Contra style action game with six levels that combine the usual sidescrolling shooting sections, a few hoverbike sections, and a flying rail shooter segment. You have a basic weapon and melee attack and can find a powerful grenade launcher, a beam weapon that can shoot slowly or be charged up for a long constant burst, or a constantly firing shorter beam that follows your weapon movements. You can also find and have one active robot powerup that can make you faster, block two hits, or one that gives you more firepower by shooting in the direction you are aiming. You can unlock two extra characters when you beat them game that have a more melee focused playstyle, different modes and difficulties are also unlocked after beating it.. More forgiving than Contra by not only letting you continue after losing all of your lives on the same stage but at the section of the stage that you died on. Completed: Night Call Platform: PC Play as a blackmailed taxi driver trying to learn the identity of a serial killer in somewhat noir styled visual novel. The mystery of the killer and the mechanics of identifying them are the least interesting elements of the game. The real game is the archetypes of modern life (and at times unlife), culture, politics, etc you meet in the back of your cab. Learning their stories, your own, attempting to help them in the moment by being someone to listen to them or just by making a connection. Completed: ACA NEOGEO METAL SLUG X Platform: PC Remade version of Metal Slug 2 that was then released in an emulated form for newer consoles and PC. Apart from a quick play through and the amusing art style I never was the biggest Metal Slug fan as it felt like a lot of them were reusing parts from each other (even this one replaced a boss with a boss from another game) and usually the first to levels are easy then you start dying quite often. Vehicles have always been pretty dull, with some not even appearing at times where there style makes much sense, and it always makes it really easy to accidentally bail out of some of the ones it gives you in boss fights. Suffers from a lot of slowdown (though apparently less than the original game). Completed: Old Man's Journey Platform: PC Beautiful art style with relaxing gameplay and music. Mechanics mostly involve you manipulating the hills of each area to allow the old man to reach his destination, which typically has him sitting down and remembering something from the past before he moves to the next destination closer to his final goal. The story told by his journey and memories isn't really that interesting or detailed to the point that you would feel anything for anyone.
