  1. DoctorEvil liked a post in a topic by Riekopo in Getting back to a golden age of Total War combat
I've made this post on the Total War forums and figured I'd share it here too since Joe is a big Total War fan. I'm looking forward to Warhammer, but am very cautious for obvious reasons. There are some things that absolutely must be done in my opinion to get the combat feeling and looking great again. To get back to a golden age of Total War combat I think a few things need to happen.

Blobbing moshpits need to be gone. Units needs to be distinguishable from each other when in close combat. Excessive clipping and phasing through needs to be gone. Units pushing each other needs to be brought back. The spaghetti line exploit needs to be fixed. The health model needs to be changed to fix ranged combat and make unit stats and combat easier to understand or dropped entirely for the old health model. Unit spacing needs to be larger and much more varied. The Guard Mode toggle button needs to be brought back especially for ranged units. Generals needs to have much higher survivability. Animations need to be correct for the weapon type and physically connect with the enemy.
Some new additions I would like to see are.

Elevation should give a range boost not damage boost. There should be a way to make a unit fall back without getting them all killed. A unit should have every formation option that makes sense for that unit and there should be more formation options. There should be more fleshed out and advanced controls. A follow command (tell a unit to follow another unit), guard command (tell a unit to guard another unit), roaming attack command (tell a skirmisher to roam the battlefield attacking targets of opportunity), an attack move command (tell a unit to move to a location and engage enemies along the route), an explore command (tell a scout to search the battlefield for the enemy), etc. Abilities should be centered on the General or on the army overall instead of every unit having abilities which creates too much micro for large scale battles. Friendly fire should be less prevalent and indicated when happening. Unit numbers should be more varied.
    Additions from posters.

Units should prioritize attacking enemy units still fighting over fleeing units. Ranged units should be able to turn themselves around to fire on enemies behind them. All projectiles should be easily visible. A projectile trail length option would be best. Soldiers sliding around like on ice should be eliminated.

Overall an improvement on Rome 2. Not a leap, but an evolution. Lots of small improvements and some big ones. A lot of features re-implemented from previous games that were missing in Rome 2. Worth the price they're asking for. I hope they continue to add features post launch and not just DLC content.

I love the main menu music and background.
    Cavalry are faster.
Armor/metal shine might be a little overdone.
Units will rout and then come back. I like it.
    The advisor is way cooler.
    Unit spacing seems better.
I'm having a bit of a hard time distinguishing units when in a melee. Everything is very brownish and dark.
I don't think I like how projectile trails look other than the flaming kind. The normal kind are really dark gray. I can barely see them. I think they need to be made a little lighter.
There should be a date and difficulty rating on each historical battle.
Some units still have the Jersey Shore hair.
The battle in the rain I did was really dark. It was really hard to distinguish anything.
I don't like the new icons above units. I want to be immersed, but the new icons remind me I'm playing a game. I would like icons like this.
I think the battle maps are bigger.
I think I'm hearing drums when I zoom in on units. I wish there were some instruments in the units. Horns would be a good one.
I don't think I like the circular icons on the campaign map.
The trees on the campaign map look like paper cutouts.
I like the animated images on the campaign map popups. I wish they would retain their color instead of turning bronze after their animation is done playing.
I don't think class icons are needed on the unit cards. I can tell what they are from their picture. I think that should be an option.
Scenery still explodes when a unit runs into it. Like stone walls.
I hope we get a 2x MSAA option. I tried 4X MSAA, but it put my FPS into the twenties. Probably won't be able to run 2X either to be honest.
Performance seems to be a bit of a problem. The graphics are slightly better than Rome 2 and the performance is slightly worse.
I'm encountering and reporting bugs as I play the prologue. They are all pretty obvious bugs. Please do a beta for the next game in the series.
    Lighting is better.
Graphics look more realistic and not like a cartoon.
    Combat animations are faster.
Cavalry seem to have more impact.
I miss blood and gore. I hope they release it free and make it more realistic looking. Not cartoonish like Shogun 2's and not all over the place and jaggy like Rome 2's. I want to see dark blood that pools and in the water too.
Still no control over Guard Mode. No button. Just permanently on for probably all units.
I like the new sound effects though some are recycled and remind me of Rome 2. Like the battle horns.
There seem to be women in the levy units.
The UI is improved, but it's still based on Rome 2's icon heavy minimalist design.
I'm going to have a seizure from all the tiny icons flashing above the unit cards. I think they should use the space they have there so they don't have to flash a million different tiny icons constantly.
I would like to be able to build watchtowers on my land to extend my line of sight across borders. Also, forts and maybe even walls.
I don't like cities having three separate defense ratings. I think it should be one.
I didn't like the Authority/Cunning/Zeal trio in Rome 2 and I still don't like it here either. I wish they would have replaced that with something like Authority/Command/Management/Piety/Loyalty/Influence.
The popup boxes on the left side of the screen in the prologue seem to lag or be running at a low framerate.
Politics is better than Rome 2, but it's still pretty bad. It doesn't make much sense to me and is just represented by a couple bars. You're a King or Emperor, but get punished for having more power? Doesn't make any sense. I think a fundamental problem with the politics is that you have control over the political influence of characters outside of your family. Which also doesn't make sense. It's not really a living breathing dynamic system.
I'm glad there is a character skill tree, but it's pretty dull. It's small number/percentage bonuses like Rome 2. Combined with the Traits bonuses and Authority/Cunning/Zeal bonuses and you end up with an extremely long and boring list of Effects Summary.
Character traits are not limited to three.
Equipping items for bonuses doesn't make sense to me. A tiny statue gives my army a morale bonus, what?
I really like the building pictures, but they're so small I can barely see them.
I still think the UI on the bottom of the screen in battles is too tall. They're wasting space.
I want real population numbers not single digit numbers.
I would like to be able to play as both sides in the Historical Battles.
Line of sight seems to be more relevant. Either the terrain blocks it more or units can't see as far.
I think parts of the battle UI should be made transparent and cutout. Like how it was in Napoleon which you can see here.
I really like the notifications during battles. I don't think they should disappear unless you right click them though.
I like the dust effects from movement in battles. I wish more dust was created as it's barely noticeable right now.
I would like the option to betray my ally on the battlefield.
The voice acting in diplomacy is straight out of Rome 2. Very lame.
I would like to be able to skip the repetitive kill animations on the campaign map.
I would like loading screens to have to press a button to continue so I can read the tips, quotes, and look at the pictures.
I would like characters to have an ethnicity.
I think the character portraits need to have more variation. Maybe different backgrounds. They all look very similar. The emperor should definitely look different.
According to the WRE family tree Stilicho was adopted by Theodosius, what?

Will continue to update as I play.

Damn, that's 10 pm in Hungary (no, I'm not saying this to be a time zone nerd, I live there). That's usually not the time when I'm at my best. Not to mention the few beers I'm intentinding to drink until then.  But I do hope that my AJSA brethren will wipe the flo... I really think Strategy games needs its own category like First person shooters, Roleplaying games, and MOBA. Honestly I think MOBA should be in the "Other PC Games" category rather than strategy games.

I wish they would leave Halo alone. It can only go down hill even more than it has already.
  16. MARVOL liked a post in a topic by Riekopo in Hoping for Xbox One hardware upgrade
I've been a proud Xbox owner since the original and have spent thousands of hours and dollars on Xbox related stuff. The Xbox One however will be the first Xbox that I don't purchase. My reasons for this are many, but one of the big ones is that the hardware powering the Xbox One is underpowered in my opinion. When the Xbox and Xbox 360 came out they were sporting GPUs that were better than anything you could buy. Now some years later with the Xbox One we have a comparatively low end GPU inside. Unlike PC's you can't upgrade the internals on a console so you are stuck with what you got until the next console generation launches. Logically you would want to pack the best hardware you can into your new console for this reason. To note the PS4 while significantly more powerful than the Xbox One it is also underpowered in my opinion. I hope Microsoft upgrades at least the GPU in the Xbox One in the future. If they do I would probably get one.
  17. Riekopo liked a post in a topic by Nasty Note in Xbox One Raffle?
I know there is a lot of animosity in the AJSA community towards Microsoft and the Xbox One, but I'm curious if anybody would be interested in a raffle for it. There is probably gonna be a little bias for the Xbox One since this is in the Xbox One section, but I figured SOME people must go here for hate, and I think this poll would be interesting.
  18. Riekopo liked a post in a topic by Clover in Is Rome II worth getting now??
It's still just as bad as ever for most people, and you can't really patch bad design choices like arcade centric gameplay and terrible campaign and battle UI. I've been a Total War fan for 14 years, and an active member of the Total War community since the first forum opened up 10 years ago. I've never dreamed of a bad Total War game- the idea was foreign to me before Rome2. Unless there is a kickass mod that comes out for it you would be doing yourself a favor by not buying it  at all. Just pick up a good Total War game Shogun2 or Rome1 with the SR2 or EB mods.

  22. Riekopo liked a post in a topic by Nytefury in Does Joe have Reddit?
Joe doesn't have a Reddit, I know there is an unofficial subreddit floating around that isn't popular and none of the officers or Joe uses. I am not saying anyone shouldn't use it, but we don't feel a need for it when we have this great site set up. I don't believe TB has a site/forum, so that is probably a reason why he has Reddit going instead.
