How RimWorld’s Code Defines Strict Gender Roles An interesting look at the game's code and how societal and personal bias can potentially lead to effecting the content of procedurally generated games, either intentionally or unintentionally, made more interesting by the developer's angry reaction in the comment section. The rational part of it being explaining that a part of the system is the way it is due to being in an early state and a problem that was fixed with a recent patch. The rest involves talking about how he came to conclusions based on gay and bisexual people he knows or knew (which would imply that other parts of the code have nothing to do with bugs or an earlier build and saying that fits perfectly with the point of the article), complaining about journalism, saying that they didn't ask him questions then saying they did but he didn't agree to the way they do interviews, not wanting to be interviewed unless he had full editorial control over it (no site or news organization will ever do or agree to this unless they are incompetent or desperate), and calling the article a hit piece (none of the many journalists or developers I saw sharing this did so acting like it was an attack on the dev or saying not to buy the game, at least not until they saw his response which then lead to them looking at past things he's said and done). I didn't see the developer in a negative light from reading the article, as the article is just a natural thing to be expected of almost anyone developing a game like this. Even the developer seems to be saying he overreacted when I last looked. It is nice to see a company defend people harassed over review scores (hell, sometimes that would involve defending people who gave their game's terrible scores like 8s and low 9s), but this is also a good point as feeling the need to respond to completely asinine claims can set a bad precedent. Remove the Washington Post review from Uncharted 4's metascore In other news, regarding people not understanding the concept of reviews, grammar, human thought process, and reading comprehension, a petition was started to remove the negative review from Uncharted 4's metacritic listing. A lot of people are lying and saying the review is satire (even though the review contains no satire or jokes) because it is listed as a "Comic Riff", as always taking the five seconds to actually look at the site would reveal that Comic Riff is what a lot of their video game, comic, animation, super hero, etc content is labeled as and it has nothing to do with an article being a joke or not (but the corporate shills are mad about criticism and they certainly aren't doing to look into anything when they can be angry toxic fanboys instead). People are also saying that because the review didn't have a score that Metacritic just assigned one randomly, knowing anything about how that works or looking into that would show those people that the author tells Metacritic what score they want to give even if a score is not used by their own publication. Kotaku has just written an article about this here. Troy Baker retweeted the petition before realizing that doing so looks pathetic, and kind of half apologized for it. 4. Starships is a Stand-alone game and a spin-off/ sequel to Civilization: Beyond Earth. The game's main focus is in Space where "players can build an armada of unique customized spaceship, explore the galaxy, defend their planet and civilizations while build a galactic federation and also have cross-connectivity with Civilization: Beyond Earth" according to many gaming news outlets and will be release on PC, MAC, IPad at Spring 2015. I support Sid Meier's and his team in Firaxis 100% and have confidence this game will be great but i'm not hyped for it though. I think it too early after they just release BE and releasing on the IPad made lose some interests but since there's rarely any RTS games on mobile devices, I guess they are trying to reach out their IPad fan from the two Civ Rev game they release on the app store. Over the past months, 2K games have been shown us their true color with Evolve DLCs and pre-order money grabs and have a feeling this might happen to Starships. What do you think?
  5. I want to start playing Civilization and have never played a strategy game like it before. (I mostly play Total War and Divinity Dragon Commander) Do you think it is worth getting Civilization Beyond Earth when it comes out (I'm UK) or is there another Civilization you would recommend for beginners in the series? Thanks for your advice!
  6. I heard Firaxis Games will develop Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth which is hybrid between Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and Sid Meier's Civilization V. This game is not going to be called Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri 2 due to EA hold the license. Likely, Civilization: Beyond Earth will be 75% sequel to Civilization V and 25% sequel to Alpha Centauri. I heard the rumor that Civilization: Beyond Earth will have many XCOM references due to developed by Firaxis Games. Remember in Civilization V: Brave New World? There is also possible that you could travel from first settled planet to the different planet and conquer all of the planets. This game will be released in Fall 2014. Did you want pre-order it? 7. So, Steam is allowing people to download the game (or part of it) in advance to the global release if they prepurchased it already. I find it a really smart way to avoid server clogging due to everyone trying to download at the same time when the inaugural day comes. Do other AJSA members think that games should follow this route in the future? http://steamcommunity.com/games/65980/announcements/detail/144438948330974965

  9. I recently picked up Civilization 5 to play with a group of my friends, but to be honest... I'm pretty terrible. Well, I say terrible, but half the time I really don't know how well I'm doing except for the fact I'm not dead yet. If you guys could give me some tips I'd be very grateful. I play as Wu Zetian (China). EDIT: Totally forgot to mention what Civs my friends play as. 10. So me and a few other dedicated fans have created a large thread on the strategy section of the forum. (Links for all CIV threads I know of: 1 2 3) Since this has finally been implemented, I thought it was my duty to suggest Civilization V It's a wonderful game, as Joe said in his review ''It's addicting as hell'' It is a strategy game, revolving around macro management, and efficiency. Yet the game has some amazing details, so it doesn't feel too simple. It has leaders from the real world, and many traits which are inspired by real world policies. With the DLCs of Gods And Kings as well as Brave New World we have seen a great addition to the game. With things as espionage and tourism, the game has only become better post-launch. The game has a in-game multiplayer component, and one can easily host a huge scale game. However time is an issue, but one could host games in weekends etc. The multiplayer sessions are great fun, and it's soo satisfying nuking another players capital and hearing his/her reaction over Teamspeak. However, there is no real competitive scene in Civilization V, although we could all chip in, and perhaps create the first e-sport for the Civilization series. (One can only dream though) I think as a community, having Civilization supported would greatly increase interest in the group. So for example: Strategy fans, looking for a good game with nice like-minded people, can join the group and join our games. I hope I am not the only one feeling, that Joe should support this game, especially after his review of it. He praised it for it's fun mechanics, and simple yet satisfying game-play. I hope all of you will vote this up! (Ps: We are a few members who have organised a group already, however because of this we may need to merge it, if the game becomes official. You can find us here: Click me! (This is the same link as link number three)) Thank you for your time. -A big Civilization fan Cons and benefits of Civilization V: Benefits: The game has the Angry Joe ''Badass seal of approval''. (Link to the review: Click me!)Great community behind the game already, adding it to the supported games would only strongen AJSA's strategy fan-base.Suprisingly customizable multiplayer component.DLCs are not required, however nescessary if one has a DLC and another doesn't. However one can easily create divisions for X DLCS.Not a steep learning curve, pretty much everybody can play if they have tried a match or two.Cons: Although customizable, the multiplayer component lacks some specific features (As far as I know) like custom maps and mods.Games tend to last several hours, and it would require great dedication and coordination to host a full match. Multiplayer WAS (It wasn't for me in my latest game) a bit buggy. However I am adding this as a con because it still could be. (Seems to be disproved, but it's a fair con to put on anyway.)No competetive scene in this game. No leaderboards for MP matches or anything. A scene can be created in AJSA itself, but there isn't any competition scene in Civilization V.
  11. A few years ago, I got Civ 5 for Mac, and it ran single player fine. I never really experienced any problems. Recently, I tried to play a multiplayer game with my friend, and things went wrong. I checked the options menu, and everything was BLANK- no options, no nothing. So I told him that it didn't matter and asked him to invite me. I joined him, but when I was in the lobby, I only saw me. And the tabs that you can normally open in the multiplayer lobby (I'd seen some matches on youtube before) were there, but when clicking on them, they were blank as well. I tried to host my own game, but the setup options were blank, too. is this a programming bug? Or is it because of my Mac? I highly doubt it's because of the Mac, since the game itself runs really really well. To recap, options menu is blank, and multiplayer options are also blank. Anyone know if they can help me?
  12. I started this thread so members of the AJSA can discuss and share strategies for the game Civilization 5. I'm aware that a thread on Civilization already exists, but I feel that is more geared toward discussing the game in general whereas this topic is more for discussing strategies. This discussions in this thread should based on the Gods and Kings and Brave New World expansions, as elements from vanilla have been changed and startegy has been given more depth. On that note, here's my entry: Over the many times I've played Carthage in Civ 5, I've developed my favorite strategy that will put you on the road to domination victory. Start the game (after making a worker and monument and stuff) building a large navy of quinqueremes if your capital is on the water. Carthage's ability to automatically start with a harbor is a boone to players that start near water because you don't have to ever build a road. As long as you build your cities on the water, you won't have to worry about city connections ever again. It is still recommended that you eventually build a road, however. If you start on land make a mad dash for the horseback riding tech and start making a large number of african forest elephants. Carthage's other ability to cross mountains after the first great general is obtained makes exploration easier and provides a quick route of escape from barbarians or whoever you happen to come across. The elephants and quinqueremes are strong enough to last you until the renaissance era. I also recommend researching construction to obtain the composite bowman, which makes a nice addition to your elephants. Set your quinqueremes to the automaticly explore the oceans for you, which is the easiest way to discover city-states and other civs. Focus on science or religion as a secondary objective to stay ahead of the other civs. By the time the elephants and quinqueremes have become obsolete, if you played your cards right, you should have a nice big empire. From there you play like any other civ, but by then you should have a huge empire and have met plenty of other civs. The abilities and special units help you immensly in the earlier eras, but as the game continues they become less useful. For example, anyone can cross mountains once they obtain air units, which are more powerful than melee units anyway, rendering the ability is useless. Still, I think that its an easy path to domination victory and a fun way to play the game.
  13. It's been just over 3 years since Civilization V was released and now it seems it's becoming overburdened with DLC. Do you think there should be a whole new game with a nearly complete reworking, more genral patches, more DLC, etc, etc? What do you guys think?
