I had a friend recently tell me to join them in a game of SMITE online. My response was, "What the hell is SMITE?" I thought it was just another Facebook game, but what I found was something much more fun. As the rise of Multiplayer Online Battle Arena games continue to grow in popularity another has reached the ranks. What makes it different? Well I have been loving it and I will explain why. Now what is SMITE exactly? Simply put it is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena similar to DOTA (Defense of the Ancients) and LOL (League of Legends). In this game you don't play as made up characters of fantastical realms, but you play as major gods of various mythologies. These include the Greek Olympians like Zues, Poseidon, and Hades; the Roman Parthenon like Vulcan, Mercury, and Bacchus; the Egyptian Gods like Ra, Anubis, and Bastet; the Norse Asgardians like Odin, Loki, and Thor; the Mayan Gods like Ah Muzen Cab, Hun Batz, and Xbalanque; the Hindu Deities like Kali, Agni, and Bakasura; and the Chinese Immortals like Sun Wukong, Guan Yu, and He Bo. Another major change is that this game is played from a third person perspective. Thus the controls are different than your average MOBA. You move around with the W,S,A, and D keys and attack with the mouse. I like the control scheme...but I know others may not be fans. Another little difference that I noticed with this game (although I may have missed it with other MOBA) is the incorporation of twitch tv with the game. What this does is you can stream live game sessions while you play if you wish. Granted I am still unfamiliar with twitch tv so I don't know a lot about it. The SMITE site will stream random sessions if you agree to let them do it. You may enjoy it or not. I honestly don't care either way right now. What are the problems? Well...the control scheme. As much as I love it I am annoyed with using the 1-4 keys to use abilities. Thus it can be a bit hard to aim abilities properly. I think you can change it so it is a minor complaint. The other complaint I have is the usual I have with games like DOTA and Infinite Crisis. I hate not having the full roster unlocked. 5 characters are unlocked immediately when you make an account (the ones unlocked depends on when you do it so it is slightly random) and 5 others are on random rotations. You can unlock more gods and skins either through micro transactions or from points earned in the game. Luckily practice mode will allow you practice with any character but playing online has most of the roster locked. Final Thoughts: I actually really enjoy this game. Weird controls aside I have always wanted to play a game where various deities go out and try to beat each other senseless (or as I call it a God War). Personally I would love to see Lovecraft Elder Gods added to this game or have Angels and Demons from Jeudeo-Christian belief added as well (granted that may cause some outrage, but I would like it) but I digress. It isn't perfect but I recommend a go if you are curious. You will either have a lot of fun or really hate it. If you like DOTA, League of Legends, or Infinite Crisis...you may be mixed about this game. If you like the idea of playing as Sobek running straight at Tyr for a death blow followed by Isis and Fenrir, then you may like this (lol). I personally recommend at least one go if nothing else. You can find me on the fields of battle as Maleficent5. I AM MALEFICENT5 AND THIS GAME HAS BEEN JUDGED! Link to game: http://www.hirezstudios.com/smitegame/home
